PERSONS
OF INDIAN ORIGIN CARD SCHEMES (PIO)
The
PIO Card scheme has been in use for a couple of years. Because
of lack of demand, the government has lowered the fees.
In Canada at least, the demand is very small. The people
found the fees exorbitant.
One
should wait till Jan next year if possible in getting the PIO Card. The Pravashi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi, Jan
9-11, the first convention of overseas Indians, will be
the occasion to announce dual citizenship.
Indications
are strong that the government would choose this event
to appease overseas Indians. It was one of the recommendations
of the Singhvi Committee on NRIs.
Many
leading overseas Indians, including Canada's minister
Herb Dhaliwal, former British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosanjh,
British MP Keith Vaz, and the many Lords in UK, ex-Trinidad
and Tobago PM, Basudeo Pandey, PM of Mauritius, Sir Anerood
Jugnauth, Prof. Amartya Sen, V.S. Naipaul, are some who
are to attend the conference.
The
Singhvi Report is available at www.indiandiaspora.nic.in
and those interested in registering could do so at indiandiaspora@ficci.com,
indianday@indiaday.org.
Fee
is US 200, the early bird offer $175 is over (Oct. 10).

FRIENDS
OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER
DCosta
Financial Group, under the banner of Friends of
St. Francis Xavier and with the
blessings of Fr.Terence DSouza, is pleased to
sponsor and organize the Feast of
St. Francis Xavier on the 7th of December 2002. We encourage
all Catholics to actively
participate in the festivities by booking stalls to
sell their wares. Goan foods and
delicacies are always a great hit and people look forward
to replenishing their stocks at
events such as these. No doubt those who book stalls
will profit!!! Stalls are priced very reasonably at
$35.00 (10x10).
Please
note that complimentary stalls will be given to various
Associations so that they can make their presence known
to the people at large. They are welcome to hold games
and other interesting themes to attract attention. Lots
of people have no idea how to contact their Village
associations. This venue would be ideal and if they
do well, a small donation would be welcome.
All
proceeds will go towards the St.Francis Xavier Catholic
Church, to be distributed as per Fr.Terences instructions.
For
bookings and further details, please contact DFG at
(416) 335-5314 or 1800-97DCOSTA or e-mail us at dfg@dcostafinancial.com.
