Hubert de Santana hit great heights during gifted career
Earlier this week, Hubert de Santana, a gifted writer, photographer,
artist and close friend of all of us here in the Star's
Travel section, died suddenly after taking ill while on
assignment. Over the years, Hubert shared his passion for
travel with our readers and introduced us to the fascinating
people and places he had visited. He touched us all and
will be greatly missed. This is another of Hubert's adventures
that we thought you would like to remember him by. Mark

+Gines
Vieges of O'Coqueiro of Porvorim
A Tribute by Tony Luis

It is with deep
sadness that I and hundreds of Gines Viegas's friends the
world over will today have received the sad news about God
calling him back to his eternal kingdom.
Gines popularly
known as O' Coqueiro of Porvorim in Goa was an immensely
likeable person having spent a large part of his life in
Tanzania and in Goa.
I
was privileged and honoured to count Gines as one of my
distinguished friends and during my visits to Goa visiting
Gines both at the restaurant and his house was a must. I
will always be grateful for his lavish and genuine hospitality
but above all for his time.
Gines was a frequent visitor to the UK visiting his sisters,
their families and his many friends and was always the life
and soul of any party. His melodic voice singing South of
the Border was legendary and will always be remembered as
the high point of any occasion.
He was a larger
than life character always with a cheerful disposition,
an array of talents cookery and organisational skills to
name but a few and ready to help friend and stranger alike.
Gines was a sincere man with a unique style, charming, caring
and kind.
His restaurant,
O'Coqueiro in Porvorim was famous and world renowned for
its location, the food and its decor but above all for its
host who was often seen at his table or mingling with guests
of all nationalities the world over. Many of them, Germans,
Swedes, Brits, Canadians, you name it they knew him and
took him to his heart. They would repeatedly visit him in
Goa and invite him to visit them abroad.
Before the onset
of the widespread means of communication in Goa, the use
of STD for international telephone was made available from
his restaurant and thousands of people over the years would
have benefited from this service. Gines leaves behind a
legacy of thorough decency, helpfulness, kindness and genius.
Farewell dear friend
Tony Luis England
