http://www.goacom.com/news/news2003/jun/msg00017.html
From Toronto Star... Jun. 6, 2003. 06:12 PM
ALLAN THOMPSON OTTAWA BUREAU
OTTAWA-Canada recruits more and more highly skilled immigrants and then leaves many to virtually fend for themselves, a parliamentary committee reported yesterday.
In a report on the federal government's settlement program for new immigrants, the House of Commons immigration committee said newcomers are increasingly falling through the cracks because of a policy that recruits highly educated and skilled immigrants, but lacks adequate programs to help them adapt.
The committee lamented the situation of immigrants who don't know enough about Canada and its job market before they get here and sometimes see their dreams of a new life fade.

Ontario Court of Appeal approves same sex marriages
From www.toronto.cbc.ca - Jun 10 2003 12:03 PM EDT
Toronto - The Ontario Court of Appeal has upheld a lower court ruling that bans on same-sex marriages are unconstitutional, potentially paving the way for gay weddings in the province.
"The existing common law definition of marriage violates the couple's equality rights on the basis of sexual orientation under [the Charter of Rights]," read the decision released Tuesday.
However, the decision doesn't mean that Ontario will automatically begin to register the marriages. Premier Ernie Eves said that he personally has no objections to the unions, but said the decision would ultimately be made in Ottawa.

Excerpt about Sambau
Sambau, pronounced sam-au, means security in our mother tongue, Konkani. The Sambau sub-committee of the GWS was formed in September 2002 to look after the security and safety needs of the Goan community during the general elections that took place in December 2002. At the Annual General Meeting held on April 14, 2003, the Sambau Committee received approval from the General Body to continue its operations for a period of 5 years. The Sambau Committee would like to sincerely thank all the members who were present and gave the Sambau Committee this new lease of life. The Control room at the Goan Gymkhana became operational on June 03, 2003. Initially, the Control room will be manned for three days every week from 19.00 hrs to 23.00 hrs. Should the need arise, and with your support, we will run the program on a daily basis. The telephone contacts of the Control room are 0733-312416 and 0722-925806.
