Since 2000, the number of foreign visitors to Goa has dropped
by 7 percent, to 272,000, while the number of ''domestic''
visitors has jumped by 36 percent, to 1.3 million. ''With
all the publicity they made in India, Goa is attracting
a new class of people,........ ''The British fellow counts
his paise and argues over a 10-rupee bottle of water. The
Indians come down from Bombay. They don't look at the price
sheets. They just say they want this or that.''

Mopa
on its way
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has confirmed that the proposed
Mopa airport in Pernem is already on its way and would be
ready by 2007-09. Parrikar says that Goa being an international
tourist destination, the State needed another airport to
the handle the burgeoning international tourist traffic,
which he expected to go beyond the 13-14 flights handled
by Dabolim airport daily so far. Parrikar also disclosed
on July 11 that the land acquisition for the proposed airport
is underway. In this connection, the Chief Minister already
had discussions with the Civil Aviation Minister, Rajiv
Pratap Rudy, when he visited Goa recently. In the meanwhile,
the work of the expansion of the Dabolim airport was also
in progress.
Return
of instability
Goans seem to be returning to familiar times with the instability
factor returning to Goan politics after a somewhat long
sabbatical. Obviously, there is pressure on the MGP and
UGDP legislators, who have lent their support to Manohar
Parrikar to remain in the Chief Minister’s chair,
to join the BJP. The Congress Party, which had been lying
low for some time, seems to be pulling up their socks to
attempt an assault to capture the treasury benches. The
common feeling that persisted among politicians and the
public that the Congress Party is a disunited house seems
to be gradually disappearing. Within a week, Babush Atanasio
Monserrate, the Taleigao MLA belonging to the UGDP, and
the two MGP MLA Pandurang Madkaikar and Ramkrishna Dhavlikar
have given indications that they are about to jump on the
BJP bandwagon. The UGDP seems to be non-committal in their
uttering on the issue, though their other MLA, Mathany Saldanha
from Cortalim, lays stress on the fact that he will not
join the BJP.
