Statistics Point to Improving Canadian economy
OTTAWA - The prospects for the Canadian economy got a double boost Wednesday when Statistics Canada released its composite leading index and investment intentions reports. With the exception of manufacturing, the leading index, which provides an early estimate of economic performance, rose in June. And with the exception of high tech and communications, capital investment is expected to rise much faster this year than Statistics Canada reported in February.

By: Mervyn Lobo
July 20, 2003
More than 500 people enjoyed themselves at the Tanzanite picnic held at Etobicoke's Centennial Park. People traveled from Montreal, Calgary, all parts of the US and the UK to meet old friends and make new ones. There were also half a dozen people who came all the way from Tanzania for the event.
The day started with games for kids of every age group from 1 to 13 years. This was followed by competitions where parents and their child formed a team to compete against other parents/children. Lunch was then served! $5 bought one a tandoori chicken quarter with a pita and salad.
After lunch, the ever popular tug-of-war competition between the married and singles got fought over. The most popular event was the volleyball competition which went on throughout the day. After the volleyball finals in the evening, trophies were presented to every winner of every competition. Tea and mandazi's were then served. The day wound up with a round of tambola

WEBSITE BONDS KONKANI PEOPLE
On January 14, 2001, a web portal www.daijidubai.com was launched to keep the Konkani-speaking people in Dubai, abreast of happenings in their district, especially Mangalore. Two years hence, the Konkani-speaking community, from different parts-be it from Mangalore, Goa, Maharashtra, Gulf, Europe, USA-have found a convenient meeting place on the web portal (brainchild of Walter D'Souza from Karkala and employed in Dubai) to exchange views, read news of the district and the world-transgressing regional boundaries. (Stanley G Pinto in The Times of India, Bangalore).

PAY CLINIC AT GMC
Following the proposal made to setup a private clinic at the GMC, the Health Minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar, denied that any such proposal was made and added that a suggestion in this regard was made by the GMC doctors. Dr Amonkar said that the government was studying the GMC doctor's suggestions before taking a formal decision. According to the proposal, the GMC would run Pay Clinics at its Bambolim complex in the evening hours where its doctors would conduct private practice and the fees accrued would be distributed between the doctors, GMC, the nurses and support staff.

GOA'S IRON ORE EXPORTS JUMP
Iron ore exports from the State have reached new heights last season with total exports touching 23.72 million tones in 2002-2003 up from 19.56 million tones in the previous season, a growth of 21.27 per cent. However, Japan still remains the major importer with a share of 45 per cent. (H)

GAYS COMING OUT OF GOAN CLOSET

A group of Miramar resident have opposed the project of four-laning of the DB Bandodkar road in its present form and suggested an alternative without the parking facility. The catwalk crawl
Fifty Indian models will display the ready to wear collections from 56 Indian designers at the Indian Fashion Week which begins in Bombay on 18 July. Figuring among them is the stunning and ambitous super model, Diandra Soares, who has carved her niche in India's modelling scene. She was Miss Bombay '95, had her first ad film in Dinesh Suitings, and has catwalked in the most prestigious ramp shows. She has modeled in commercials for Tips and Toes, VIP underwear, Tillsbury whiskey and music videos for Ila Arun (Kichdi), Jalwa, Jadoo and Bali Bramhabhatt's remix album. Famed for her ringleted locks, Diandra appeared shaved off completely, bold and beautiful for the climax of a Sosa's fashion show at Tito's in Baga-Calangute, dressed in a Saviojon outfit, on November 27, 2002. The bold trendsetter aspires to make it to the London ramp sooner or later. The leading models are reportedly getting together as Models United, led by Diandra, to fight against harassment and payment delays, which are said to be common in their profession.

You shouldn't have to wait till after you have had by-pass heart surgery as I did to find out that you have been at risk for heart problems as Asian Indians generally are. "In India," Dr. Prakash C. Deedwania, cardiologist at UCSF, Freshno, tells us "cardiovascular disease is already the No.1 cause of death." "It is unbelievable," says Dr. Kanu Chatterjee, cardiologist at the UC, San Francisco, "the number of young in their 30s and 40s who are dying of heart attacks. Its an epidemic in India."
