"The U.S. offers unbounded opportunities in terms of freedom and money. In return it robs you of your soul," said Victor Menezes, senior vice chairman of Citigroup.
Indo Asian News Service
Chicago, September 29

The U.S. offers many opportunities for freedom and wealth but robs people's souls, a top Indian American banker told hundreds of his community members here, urging them to invest in values rather than money.
"The U.S. offers unbounded opportunities in terms of freedom and money. In return it robs you of your soul," said Victor Menezes, senior vice chairman of Citigroup.
Menezes was speaking at the annual banquet of the Indo American Centre, a non profit community service organisation that serves immigrants from the South Asian community in Chicago. Around 500 people attended the event.
"Invest in your family, in achievements, not money and live below your means," he urged the business leaders and community members at the banquet.

In the Canadian news media, minorities are significantly under-represented.
How biased is mainstream (Canadian) media?
Editorial By: CanIndia News Weekly
Asians and other visible minorities play an increasingly important role in North American society. Visible minorities consist of 10 percent of Canada’s population. Asians have been for several decades the main source of migrants into Canada. There is also a growing Canadian born Asian population in Canada. Together, Asian-Canadians have contributed and helped shape Canadian society. In the last two decades, the Canadian government has acknowledged that minorities as a legitimate and integral component of Canada’s much vaunted “mosaic.” This commitment to diversity exists within the Multicultural Act and Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Yet, the mass media continues to garner criticism for their unbalanced, biased and inaccurate coverage of minorities. Their actions have influenced how Canadians perceive Asians as we as Asians view ourselves in the media.

Canada - ID cards debated ---Commons committee on citizenship and immigration has found little support or compelling evidence to show why such a card is necessary
From: The Toronto Star. Oct. 7, 2003. 06:34 AM
BRUCE CAMPION-SMITH OTTAWA BUREAU
OTTAWA - A national ID card, touted by Immigration Minister Denis Coderre, would be horrendously expensive, do little to enhance national security and could mark a troubling invasion of privacy that many Canadians will not accept, a Commons committee report will warn today.
After a year of study and consultations, the Commons committee on citizenship and immigration has found little support or compelling evidence to show why such a card is necessary. See full article at:

Toronto- Goan Inter-Village Soccer Finals
From: Eugene Correia
Posted on Goanet
Date: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 10:39 PM
Bogmallo clinched the Goan Inter-Village Soccer Tournament with a solitary goal win over Aldona on Sunday. A 35-yard goal by Xavier Rodrigues, off a short pass from a free kick, floated into the right-hand corner of the Aldona net. The intended cross dipped into the goal, probably helped by the cold weather, catching goalkeeper Justin D'Silva completely off-guard as he had stepped forward.
The goal disappointed Justin greatly since just earlier he had saved superbly a penalty-kick. Justin was the main barrier for Bogmallo as he often foiled the forwards with his quick reflexes.
Bogmallo, who last won the Gaudencio Fernandes Memorial Trophy in 1998, had the better of the play.
Aldona were content on defending. Missing one of its star players, Joe Fernandes, for much of the match, the Aldona attacked suffered. Joe can in very late in the match but hampered by a back injury, he could not contribute much. Just after conceding the goal, Aldona made two frantic attempts at the Bogmallo. One deft shot was saved on the goal line by forward Dempo player, John D'Souza.
Aldona, a team made up mostly of D'Silva brothers and cousins, were lucky to have made into the final. They edged out Calangute in the semi-finals. Bogmallo crashed into the final with an unconvincing 3-1 win over Margoa, the holders.

British charters arrive
The season’s first arrival of 592 tourists in Goa by two separate charters on October 12 to a traditional welcome heralded the commencement of what is projected as a season of plenty by the tourism sector. The first flight ‘Monarch’ touched down at 2.30 pm at the Dabolim airport with 360 tourists while 232 more landed, an hour later. With an endeavour to make Goa round-the-year tourist destination, the Tourism department has launched and extensive and vigorous promotional campaign. The mood is definitely buoyant in Goa’s hospitality industry, and every hotel, restaurant and other service folk are gearing up to greet the boom, which they missed sorely last year. More charters from other countries are expected towards October-end, and the number of estimated charter flights are put between 600 to 700.

Computer in every goan home
Just recently Power minister Digambar Kamat, while extolling the virtues of the cyber age scheme being implemented in Goa, said that under the scheme of the government expect to reach each and every household in Goa with a computer each during the next five years. He was speaking as chief guest after inaugurating a seminar on “Cyber Laws and Cyber Crimes” organised by the Law Graduates Guild at Nanu Resort in Betalbatim yesterday. Of course, one has to take such pronouncements with a pinch of salt. For many middle class and poor families, the computer would mean much less than a television or even better living conditions. Even quite a few students, who have been allotted computers, are yet to avail of the benefit, wondering whether they should make the initial payment, however, low it may be.

Fine monsoon
Despite its sluggish start, the monsoon of 2003 has been an average one with 2699.6 mm rainfall so far. It’s almost a month now since the last good shower. The Goan rice cultivator appears quite content this year, with a good harvest. It is harvest time in Goa, and the place is full of farm labourers from Karnataka. Unless the labourers come to reap the harvest, the paddy from the field won’t reach the ‘koddo’ (granary) in the Goan house anymore.

Sky bus metro
October 15 was a momentous day for Konkan Railway Corporation when Nitish Kumar launched the “Sky Bus Technology” in Margao. Rajaram revealed that Rs.70,000 crore work order has been bagged by the KRC globally. In India itself it is Rs.25,000 crore. Expression of interest has been overwhelming within the country with States interested in the sky bus metro for 15 cities. Of this Andheri to Ghatkopar, Cochi, Chenai, Pondicherry, Ahmedabad and Pune are under consideration. KRC managing director, B Rajaram, said the introduction of the Sky Bus will redefine the entire transportation scenario in the near future. It will change urban travel as it will be safer as well as faster. It will cost 50 paise per km. Rajaram informed that Goa will be the first state to benefit from this technology. With the KRC foreseeing that projects worth Rs.70,000 crore will materialize in the next few years, the total royalty working to a whopping Rs.7000 crore, the Goa government would share 20 per cent of the royalty, with the balance 80 per cent going to the KRC.

EUGENE CORREIA** on : Goan journalism -- views from near and far...

Behind The News: Voices From Goa's Press
"Chap from my village " job recommendation from
" Sorrowing Lies My Land" author causes irreparable hurt
Edited Excerpts....

I was involved in mainstream journalism in Mumbai since my college days, first with The Indian Express and later with the Free Press Journal. I provided freelance services for both papers in the sports department. It was my dad's cousin, Felix Valois Rodrigues, who inspired me to take up journalism.

After my graduation, he gave me an introductory letter to Lamberto Mascarenhas. Mascarenhas, in turn, gave me an introductory note to K.S.K. Menon, who had been of the Navhind Times. I took the letter to Menon and, after reading it, said he would contact me if any position arose. He gave me back the note. I read the Mascarenhas' scribbled note and was shocked. Mascarenhas had introduced me as a "chap" from "my village". It was true, we both came from Colva, but to a young man like me seeking a job it was horrifying to read a learned man like Mascarenhas call me a chap. It's also true that Mascarenhas and I belong to different strata in Goa's caste system. I couldn't believe a man of his stature could introduce me in such a demeaning way. I think I have the note somewhere in my collection of memorabilia.

Canada-based Eugene Correia has worked for a wide range of national-level newspapers published in India. Besides those listed in this essay, he has also written for India Today, and a number of expat Indian publications published from overseas. What stands out is this journalist's sharp understanding of Goan issues and politics, and his memory for detail, all the more remarkable since he has been based outside Goa for virtually his entire working life.
