at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre. Beloved wife of the
late Bernard (Silu). Loving mother of Ralph and his wife
Fiona, Linette and her husband Thomas. Grandma will be lovingly
remembered by Daryl, Desmond and David. Dear sister of Vera
Nazareth and Monica Pinto. The family thanks the Doctors,

mass for the soul of Carlota Mascarem has, who died in Goa,
will be offered by her sorrowful family, on Thursday, May
1, 2003 at 6.30 p.m. at Christ the king r.c. Church (igreja
de cristo rei), 3495 confederation parkway, Mississauga,
Ontario, Canada. (Confederation pkwy/central pkwy).
Following the mass, you are all invited to join the family
for refreshments at church hall. We shall be grateful to
relatives and friends for their kind participation.

Born, Ambaji Shinde, jewelry designer, dies at 85

NEW
YORK (AP) - Ambaji Shinde, who as principal designer
at the New York jeweler Harry Winston had set jewels
for Indian maharajahs and Hollywood celebrities, died
Tuesday. He was 85. Shinde designed the Winston firm's
signature wreath necklace as well as the $175,000 necklace
that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 1999 Academy Awards.
He reset the blue, 45.52-carat Hope Diamond.Born in
Goa, India, Shinde was trained in the fine arts at the
J.J. School of Art in Bombay. His first designs were
diamond bracelets worn by the maharajah of Porbander.
He later arranged jewelry for other wealthy Indian families. |

independence came to India in 1947, Shinde was approached
by Winston. He left his wife and six children behind
to accept his job. His wife's frail health prevented
her from traveling to the United States. |

Goan Welfare Society (GWS), Kuwait is
pleased to announce the annual GWS Educational Awards for
academic year 2002-03 to bonafied Goan meritorious top ranking
students among the Indian Schools in the State of Kuwait,
who secured the highest number of marks in the aggregate
at the Std. X (CBSE Examination Board, New Delhi), and Std.
XII (CBSE Examination, New Delhi -Commerce & Science streams).
The GWS Educational Awards are sponsored by Mr.& Mrs. Sam
Alphonso (patron member of Goan Welfare Society). The criteria
for judging the awardees will be based on the authenticated
marks sheets, birth certificate, detailed address in Goa,
Telephone contact in Kuwait, should be sent or hand delivered
to: The President, Goan Welfare Society, P.O. Box 1335 Safat,
13014 Safat, Kuwait within one month of the announcement
of the results. No fax/email responses will be entertained.
The names of the winners will be announced and the awards
distributed at a public function.
