Funeral in Canada for Charles Alvares ex-resident of Bahrain
By SANTOSH SHETTY in Canada
Edited excerpt of an article from Gulf Daily News posted on Goa-Net by Domnic Fernandes of Anjuna/Dhahran
HUNDREDS of former Bahrain residents attended a funeral in Mississauga, Canada, to pay their last respects to Charles Alvares, who died in late July after a prolonged fight against cancer.
Mr. Alvares, aged 72, lived in Bahrain for 35 years, and was unit manager with life insurance firm ALICO, before retiring to Canada in August 1996 to join his daughters and their families.
The former president of the Karnataka Sports Club and vice-president of the Young Goans Club, was one of the most widely respected members of the Indian expatriate community in Bahrain.
He was also an avid bridge player. He passed on his expertise in a book he wrote entitled ' Precision Bridge for Anyone'.
Committee members of the various expatriate clubs he was associated with in Bahrain regarded him as a father-figure and role model and frequently consulted him on various issues.
They remember him as "a thorough gentleman and the epitome of grace and dignity - a straight-shooter, never afraid to speak his mind but, at the same time, always mindful of the feelings of others".
Among the numerous visitors at the palliative care unit of the Credit Valley Hospital recently was Father Felicio Diniz, parish priest at Bahrain's Sacred Heart Church, who was holidaying in Canada.
Mr. Alvares leaves a widow Gemma, daughters Charlotte, (her husband George De Couto, their children Clyde, 21, and Gary, 20) and Ginette (her husband Eddie D'Souza and their children Carina, 10, and Jason, eight).
The funeral mass was held at St Francis Xavier Church in Mississauga People in Bahrain wishing to send e-mail condolences may contact the Alvares family at gemma_alvares2001@yahoo.ca or decouto@sympatico.ca or
