Catholic
Schools Celebrate System's Spiritual and Moral Focus During
Catholic Education Week May 2-7, 2004
TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - From May 2 -7, 2004 Ontario's Catholic
schools will celebrate the distinctive nature of Catholic
education. The Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association
(OCSTA) annually coordinates this promotional event to raise
awareness about the unique dimension of Catholic education
in Ontario.
Catholic school students learn in an environment that nurtures
the development of the whole person. This includes focusing
on the intellectual and spiritual, physical and moral, cultural
and aesthetic dimensions of each student. The holistic approach
to education is what makes Catholic schools distinctive,"
explained OCSTA President, Louise Ervin.
Throughout the week Catholic school boards across the province
will be hosting special liturgies and public events to acknowledge
their achievements and to share with the community the distinctive
nature of Catholic education.
Schools will acknowledge an added dimension to the celebration
of Catholic Education Week this year as 2004 marks the 20th
Anniversary of the government of Ontario's decision to complete
public funding for Catholic schools. Prior to former premier
Bill Davis' June 12, 1984 announcement of the extension of
Catholic school funding to grade 13 (OAC), the government
funded Catholic schools only to grade 10.

At
the Multicultral History Society -October 1 December 15, 2004
The Multicultural History Society invites you to contribute
to a new interactive digital history project
The
Multicultural History Society (MHSO) is pleased to announce
that it has been chosen to pilot an innovative interactive
public history project called Telling Lives, developed by
the American History Workshop with grants from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services and the University of Toronto.
The pilot's theme is GOING TO SCHOOL, and the goal is to collect
hundreds of memories from Toronto residents and others about
their earliest experiences of classrooms, teachers, and playground
adventures
Background
Host sites for the Telling Lives pilot in 2003 and 2004 include
the New York Historical Society, the Hartford Public Library,
the Atlanta History Center, and the free library of Philadelphia.
The Multicultural History Society is this only Canadian destination
for the pilot installation.
The
MHSO will host Telling Lives from October 1 to December 15,
2004. The installation dates correspond with the opening of
the Oral History Museum, and present an excellent opportunity
to bring in members of the public to view the Museum and contribute
their own stories at the same time.
The
Telling Lives installtion consist of a computer kiosk, where
visitors can record their stories (much like a "Speaker's
Corner"), and an introductory area with images and text
on the subject of going to school in Toronto. Included in
this introductory area is a brief video presentation showcasing
excerpts from pre-recorded interviews on the subject of "going
to school."
How
you can contibute
We'd like to invite you to contribute photographs or other
memorabilia from your school days to enrich our presentation
of Telling Lives. Class photos, personal photos of school
experiences, report cards, medals from sporting events and
other memorabilia are all welcome. A selection of photographs
and objects will be incorporated into an exhibit which will
accompany the Telling Lives installation. Your contributions
will be credited in the exhibit, and your materials returned
to you upon completion of the project.
For
more information about Telling Lives, and to find out how
you can contribute, please contact Lillian Petroff at 416-979-2973.
The deadline for contributions is Friday, June 4, 2004.
