Rebecca Pinto
An Outstanding Young Woman. |
|
From: "Anthony Gomes"
tonfil@sprint.ca
Rebecca Pinto, a University of Alberta student about
to enter her second year of chemical
engineering, has won the C.D. Howe Memorial Foundation
Engineering Awards Program Scholarship. It's both
prestigious and profitable for Ms. Pinto - giving her
$7,500 each year for three years to put towards her
studies. Ms. Pinto has the enviable and unbeatable
record of a 4.0 GPA, the best there is. This follows
high school marks of 100 per cent in math and
physics. Academic activity is only one of Ms. Pinto's
pursuits. She is an
active volunteer, playing piano at a senior citizens'
residence, working with the Big Brothers and Big
Sisters local chapter, and organizing students'
blood donations for Canadian Blood Services. She also
mentors with Women in Scholarship, Engineering,
Science and Technology.
Says
Ms. Pinto: "The different leadership activities have
definitely had an impact on my life and
the direction I am heading. They have shown me
that sharing my time and effort with my community not
only benefits those around me, but
empowers me to do more with my life as well. I will,
therefore, undoubtedly continue to use the skills I
have to better serve my community and hopefully
inspire others to do the same." Volunteer activities
are very satisfying for Ms. Pinto. |

The Benedictine monks of Westminster Abbey in Mission
B.C. elected Father John Braganza, 43, as their third
abbot on Monday, August 8th. Father Abbot John was
born in London, England in 1962 of East Indian
parents. He was taught by Canadian Jesuits at their
school in Darjeeling, India. His father, now deceased,
was a Colonel in the Indian army and then moved the
family after retirement to Prince Rupert, B.C. in the
1970s. His mother lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
Steven Braganza entered the Seminary of Christ the
King in Mission in 1983 and Westminster Abbey as a
novice in 1985. He made first profession of vows in
1986, taking the religious name John. He made solemn
vows in 1989 and was ordained to the priesthood in
1992, shortly after the election of Abbot Maurus
Macrae as the abbey's second abbot.
He received his B.A. from the Seminary of Christ the
King in 1989 and his M.Div. from the Seminary in 1991.
Abbot John did special studies in Education at Western
Washington University in Bellingham during the summers
of 1992, 2000 and 2001. He received the S.T.L. degree
from the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas "Angelicum"
in Rome in 1997.
Abbot John has taught Theology, Latin, French,
English, Drama, Speech, Physical Education and Sacred
Music classes in the seminary. He has also been
involved in the eventual setting up of an Abbey of
Benedictine nuns in British Columbia.
He has been in charge of the abbey orchards for
several years and has been a great help in working on
the farm and prefecting in the seminary. One cannot
know Father John for long without being reminded of
the wisdom of the East and the gentle meditative
flavour of that part of the globe.
