THE GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTH
ASIA
Lahore, 12th October 2005 (Fifth Day)
"Letter
from: Rt. Rev.
Lawrence J.
Saldanha Archbishop of Lahore & President of
Pakistan Catholic Bishop’s Conference." |
|
8th October 2005, a normal
bright Saturday morning. Suddenly, at 8.52 a.m. my
office began to shake and shudder, the whole building
began to sway - an experience quite different from
previous earthquakes. It was quite prolonged too, it
seemed like two terrifying minutes. With unsteady
steps I made my way out to the verandah and saw the
birds flying in alarm. All my office staff ran out,
numbed and dazed.
Soon the TV began to give the breaking news that a
massive earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale
had happened, with its epicenter in Azad Kashmir, just
80 km north of Islamabad. The four towns worst hit
were: Muzzafarabad (75% destroyed) (capital of Azad
Kashmir) Abbotabad (40%), Mansehra (50%) and Balakot
(90%).

Economy needs
workers past 65-Labour shortage worries businesses
Immigrants, more
babies not solution
|
Getting people to work longer — not subsidizing more
babies or bringing in more immigrants — is the best
way to boost the labour force as the population
ages, the Conference Board of Canada says.
Developed nations tend to choose among three policy
options in response to the aging trend, but two of
them don't work, the Conference Board says in its
annual performance report card.
"France is subsidizing women to have more babies,"
board president and chief executive Anne Golden told
a Star editorial board meeting yesterday. But the
cost of raising and educating a child in a developed
country far exceeds such subsidies, she said.
"We're not thinking through immigration," Golden
also said. Even if Canada were to bring in
immigrants at a rate of 1 per cent of the current
population a year — an idea reiterated by Prime
Minister Paul Martin last month — there still would
not be enough new workers to meet demand, she added.

Canada losing ground in global
rankings, Conference Board says
Read More
11:45 AM EDT Oct 23
TORONTO (CP) - Canada continues to slide down the
ranks of the world's top economies and is a
"chronic laggard in key areas, notably
productivity and investment," according to the
Conference Board of Canada's latest global report.
Dropping investment spending and sub-par
productivity growth pulled Canada down to the
No.12 spot from sixth place last year and third in
2003, the board said Tuesday.
"Canada runs the risk of squandering its abundant
endowments and opportunities," Conference Board
CEO Anne Golden said in a release.
"Our report card shows that Canada's relative
performance continues to slip, and other countries
are not standing still."
Canada earned top 12 rankings in all six
categories of the board's global survey, but lost
ground in four, including a decline to 12th from
sixth in the economy category.
"Even in areas such as health and society, where
we believe that we have created a strong social
fabric, our public record does not measure up to
our international brand," Golden said.

Tourists Stranded By
Wilma's Wrath
Oct. 22, 2005. 01:00 AM

"Our priority is safety," said Errol Francis,
president of Conquest Vacations and chairman of the
Canadian Association of Tour Operators.

Telephone service cut out as Hurricane Wilma bore
down on a Toronto family of three yesterday at a
beach resort in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
"I last spoke to my daughter at 3 p.m. Thursday,"
Mary Ann Gallacher said from Toronto, clearly
worried for her daughter, son-in-law and their
year-old child stranded in the path of the storm
generating winds of more than 200 km/h.
"They're huddled in the bathroom. They said it
would be the last call for 30 hours."
The hurricane tore into Mexico's Mayan Riviera
yesterday with torrential rains and winds, filling
the streets with water, shattered glass and
debris. The storm shattered windows and downed
trees on the island of Cozumel, a popular
cruise-ship stop.
"Tin roofing is flying through the air everywhere.
Palm trees are falling down. Signs are in the air
and cables are snapping,'' Julio Torres told
Associated Press by telephone from the Red Cross
office in Cozumel.
Officials didn't expect to be able to reach
Cozumel until late today to assess damage.
The Category 4 storm, which killed 13 people in
Haiti and Jamaica, was expected to pummel the tip
of the Yucatan Peninsula for two days. It is
forecast to sideswipe Cuba before bearing down on
Florida on Monday.
Goa Hospital's lack of counsellors blamed in the case

Srawan Gawas took two copper wires, tied one to an
iron bangle on his pregnant wife's wrist and
attached the other to his wedding ring.
He then twisted the wires together, stuck the
unattached ends into an electric socket and
committed murder-suicide.
The deaths of the 34-year-old taxi driver and his
22-year-old wife in the coastal town of Vasco da
Gama in the southeastern state of Goa baffled
relatives and neighbours and made newspaper
headlines as police failed to find a motive.
The truth emerged when forensic specialists at Goa
Medical College sent blood samples from the couple
and the six-month-old fetus of their daughter for
HIV tests.

Sob story: Onions still
dear
By Preetu Nair
PANAJI, Oct 24: The arrival
of the train carrying 30 tonnes of onions from Pakistan to
Amritsar in Punjab on October 23 has not made much difference
in Goa, as the onion price is still ruling high at Rs.20-24
per kilo in the market. However, on Sunday, the price of the
vegetable was the highest at Rs.28 a kilo and people were seen
getting tear-eyed over onion at the Panaji market. "The sale
of onions have decreased in the last few days by say around 40
to 50 per cent," opined a vegetable vendor at the Panaji
market. (GT)
Awareness drive on bird
flu launched in Goa
PANAJI,
Oct 25: The department of animal husbandry and veterinary
services and the forest department have started a joint
awareness campaign on bird flue disease as precautionary
measure. The task of collecting and checking the serum of
different birds brought in the State has also begun. It has
also been observed that the mechanism needed to control the
disease is absent in the state and a panel of officers would
leave for training at Pune on October 27. (NT)
The Mopa Airport
By Melson FM Louis
Goans should support the Citizen's
Action Committee constituted under the South Goa MP, Mr
Churchill Alemao, to oppose the new civilian airport at Mopa.
The State government should ask the defence ministry to shift
the naval air base from Dabolim, so that the present Dabolim
civilian airport could be expanded and modernised to match
international standards. The Dabolim airport is not a naval
airport for it has not been classified as a defence aerodrome
by the Government of India, ministry of Civil Aviation
No.50988, dated January 1988. (My View, NT)
ALDONA PARK PROJECT: CREATIVE,
COLOURFUL
ALDONA,
Oct 26: At the children's park near the Aldona Church, the
kids were at a different, colourful, creative game this
morning. Tiny tots to near-teenagers, with brush and colour in
their tiny hands, enthusiastically decorated the wall of the
park, led and encouraged by their elders. The elders had
earlier tidied up the park, removing all the weeds and bushes,
clearing the garbage, etc.
In what they called the "Aldona Park Project", concerned
Aldonkars set about cleaning the park and making it a place to
visit regularly for "our children and their children". The
wonderful "Colour Workshop" is something to be emulated by
elders in most other villages and their children. (DGNC)
Padri: Good social entertainer
PANJIM, Oct 22: The screening of
Prince Jacob's entertaining Konkani movie "Padri" took off
today afternoon at Ashok cine theatre here. Sindhdurg Bishop
Allwyn Barretto, Mandur parish priest Fr Conceicao D'Silva,
Pundalik Naik, Tomazinho Cardozo and others figured among
those who watched the inaugural screening of Prince Jacob's
Rs.50-lakh venture, produced by Mangalore's Raymond Quadros,
ably directed by Rajesh Fernandes and with thrilling music by
Wilfy Rebimbus.
The Konkani film has already been running to packed houses in
Mangalore for the last three weeks, reveals
comedian-playwright Jacob, who appeared justifiably excited
about the film, which takes him triumphantly from the Konkani
tiatr to the silver screen. The entire cast has worked to make
the movie memorable, however, none misses the brilliance that
Newton breathes in the role of Fr Savio, the pivotal character
of the engrossing narrative. Last week, "Padri" enjoyed the
privilege of raising the curtains for the Goa State Film
Festival 2005. (DGNC)

Lisboa, 23rd September 2005
Dear René Barreto, coordinator of World Goa Day
It was a great pleasure to welcome you and Maria to Casa
de Goa
and to have the opportunity to talk with you about the
role we
envisage for Casa de Goa in the Portuguese society and
our
future plans.
We were also very happy to realise that we have a common
goal
- a Convention for the leaders of Goan associations
all over the
world to get together in order to share not only ideas
and
achievements, but also plans to involve 2nd and 3rd
generation
Goans in the effort to strengthen Goan identity and
culture.
We will be glad to pursue the matter further thought in
the near
future, but a possible date for the Convention, to be
held in Lisbon,
would be October next year.
I can assure you that Casa de Goa will provide all its
support,
not only from the organisational point of view but also
in the definition of
the Convention programme.
Kindest regards

GoaNetters Nite Out In Toronto

A group of GoaNetters met for dinner in Toronto to host
Gabe Menezes, visiting from U.K., and otherwise have a
good time.
The
Venue was Dom's Kitchen - where the motto is dine like you
do at home!
Besides Gabe, the party included active Toronto GoaNetters:
- Bosco D'S & Mervyn Lobo who drove all the way from the
east end,
- Kevin Saldanha who has a vet clinic nearby
- Locals Tim & Jenny de Mello & John J. D'Souza from
Brampton
And dine they did with all the Goan dishes including
sorpotel. prawn curry and all the rest. Acquafeni was
passed around in lieu of beers, and the party carried late
into the evening long after the place closed with Mervyn
picking up the dinner tab.
Thanks Mervyn!.
Soul Yatra-Indian jazz ambassadors
Jazz Goa <jazzgoa@yahoo.com>
Mumbai
based jazz ensemble Soul Yatra is back after a very
successful Asia-Pacific tour. Appointed as the Indian
ambassadors of jazz by Hennessy XO, Soul Yatra has now
been signed on as brand ambassadors and will perform
several international events for Hennessy over the next
two years. This is heartening news indeed for Indian jazz
artistes who have been struggling for decades to find a
voice in the international jazz arena. Jazz may have
originated in America but today this form of improvised
music is widely being accepted as the global sound of
music. Jazz has always been alive and evolving drawing
from worlwide cultures in it's journey towards global
acceptance. Indian classical musicians in particular, have
made a huge contribution to jazz since Indian classical
music is all about improvisation-the keyword to jazz.

CONCERN AND HELPLESSNESS MEET CHURCH THEFT TREND
By Pamela D'Mello
The
Asian Age asianage at sancharnet.in Panaji: A spate of
thefts in Christian chapels in the state have again
focussed attention on a chronic problem --- the
illegal trade in sacred art objects and antiques.
Last Monday, relic hunters reportedly ransacked a
chapel in Pilerne, a quiet village in North Goa,
stealing mainly sacred statues of Christian saints and
gods, and pieces of ornate carved wood, initially
estimated to be collectively worth Rs 1.5 million.

Cardiac patients uninformed about
dangerous food and drug interactions
MONTREAL, Oct. 25 /CNW Telbec/ - Cardiac medications mixed
with certain foods and herbal supplements can endanger
patients' health, especially in those taking multiple
medications.
A
paper by Nancy Chaytor presented today at the Canadian
Cardiovascular Congress 2005, co-hosted by the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian
Cardiovascular Society, says there is a knowledge deficit
in this area. Her presentation described many known
food-drug interactions which clinicians should, but don't
always, discuss with patients.
"It
is vital that people taking cardiac medications are aware
of these potentially dangerous interactions, and that they
tell their doctor everything they are taking" says Dr.
Beth Abramson, Heart and Stoke Foundation spokesperson.
"Through my own research on complementary and alternative
medicines I know that sharing that information is
critical, but often doesn't
happen."
