Canada to review
immigration policy
Tuesday,
November 1, 2005 (Toronto):
Canada has decided to
unveil sweeping changes in its immigration policy
and is planning to take in as many as 300,000 new
workers annually for the next five years to tackle a
huge backlog of prospective immigrants.
Canada is on track to accept 245,000 immigrants
this year, the very high end of last year's target,
and will raise its target for next year to between
225,000 and 255,000, Immigration Minister Joe Volpe
said.
"We have to start thinking about the Immigration
department as a recruiting vehicle for Canada's
demographic and labour market needs," Volpe was
quoted as saying by The Globe and Mail yesterday.

A Saturday 'nite bazaar' in
Siolim-Assagao that Goa will not forget
By - Pushpa
Iyengar
Excerpts:
PANAJI:
Goa's famed Saturday Nite Bazaar - a bit like Woodstock meets
Flea market - will begin at a new location starting this
tourist season. A 10,000 square metre sprawling space on the
Assagao-Siolim plateau, about two km from the earlier location
at Arpora, is where the market is likely to start from
November 19.
Started by Ingo Grill, a Dutch documentary and industrial film
maker, the bazaar has over 20,000 jostling for space as they
check out the 500 stalls that sell an assorted variety of
wares; apart from food stalls tempting the palate with a range
of international cuisine while live bands belt out
mind-blowing music.
This is a must-see, must-do on a foreign tourist's itinerary
in addition to being a popular haunt for Indian celebs.
The Assagao communidade late last month gave the no objection
certificate to set up the market to Freddy Fernandes,
representing Goa Adventures Private Limited, the body
organising the bazaar.
Fernandes made an application for 50,000 sq metres on a long
term basis, but following objections from some communidade
members that a lease was not applicable in this case, a fresh
application was made seeking 10,000 square metres on a
temporary basis and granted.
Victor D'Souza, sarpanch of Assagao and also a member of the
communidade, told DNA that the lease has been granted for this
season (nine months) for Rs 6 lakh.
No wedding mass
for mixed marriages?
PANJIM: Catholics planning to marry partners from other faiths
may now have to go without the wedding Mass if a recent
directive from Rome comes into effect. A national daily
reported that the Archdiocese of Mumbai has decided 'that
individuals marrying outside the religion, will not be allowed
the wedding mass'. This, the report states, is a move to
encourage Mumbai's Catholics to marry within the community. (GT)

Globalising Goa
Perhaps the government of Goa is not aware that Goa is slowly
being globalised and what the government has not seen or even
understood is that this globalisation is happening in rural
Goa, where age old traditions are under threat. Perhaps the
government in its school-boy enthusiasm is encouraging such
policies, which they feel is for the betterment of Goa, but
little do they realise that such policies are not only
regressive for the State but not benefiting the people at any
cost. Instead of taking the State forward, these policies are
making the people of Goa slaves to a new colonial power that
is coming to Goa under the guise of 'helping the people'.
Navelim feast
MARGAO, Nov 7: Thousands of devotees participated in the
candle light procession in the wee hours of November 7 in Navelim, heralding the first day of the novena of the feast of
Our Lady of Rosary Church. Around 18,000 devotees carrying
colourful lanterns took part in the traditional process, which
began from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel, Telaulim, at 3.30
in the morning. Well illuminated arcs welcomed the miraculous
image as the procession wound its way through the three-km
route to Navelim church. (H)
Grain Drain
BY PAUL FERNANDES
Goans are known for their fondness of fish, curry and rice.
But did you know that unseasonal rains could not only reduce
the nutritional content of the grain but also add toxic
substances during storage of paddy in fields after harvesting?
Says R Elangovan, technical officer, of Save Grain Campaign
Office of the ministry, "Unseasonal rains cause problems due
to heavy moisture. The grain gets a dark colouration as it
remains stacked in its storage place. Toxins develop due to
lack of fresh air and spoil the grain." (GT)
Slow train to Goa
The plush restaurant car of the Deccan Odyssey
One
way to get to know India is by taking a luxury train tour.
Linsey Wynton is enchanted by the glamorous Deccan
Odyssey.
Cocooned in soft cotton sheets, I awoke in my luxury train
compartment, peeled back the thick curtains and stared at the
teeming chaos of India rolling past the window
This was an early morning wake-up call I wouldn't forget.
I was
on the Deccan Odyssey, a five-star train-cum-mobile hotel
launched last year, which saunters on a round trip from Bombay
through the regions of Goa and Maharashtra in western India. .
