Immigration Issues in Canadian Election
Conservatives would
reduce immigration barriers Wed, 04 Jan 2006
CBC News
<http://www.cbc.ca/story/canadavotes2006/national/2006/01/04/elxn-toriesimmigration.html>
Stephen Harper courted the immigrant vote on Wednesday,
promising to cut the immigration landing fee, and work
to have foreign credentials recognized in Canada. The
Conservatives would cut the $975 landing fee in half
immediately, and work to reduce it over time to $100,
Harper said at a news conference in Mississauga, Ont.
"Immigrants and their families should be allowed to keep
more of their own money in their pockets to start a new
life in Canada," Harper said.

Western cities
enjoy fastest growing economies
OTTAWA, December 19 -
Western Canadian cities will top the list of the fastest
growing metropolitan economies in Canada next year, just
as they did in 2005, according to the Conference Board's
Metropolitan Outlook - Winter 2006.
"In 2005, western Canada boasted eight of the nine
fastest-growing metropolitan economies, led by Edmonton.
In 2006, four of the top five are expected to be in the
west," said Mario Lefebvre, Director, Metropolitan
Outlook Service.
Thanks to Olympic-related activity, another year of
exceptional growth is expected in the construction
sector in 2006, paving the way for Vancouver to have the
fastest growing economy in Canada next year. Almost
31,000 new jobs are expected to be created in Vancouver
in 2006, and real gross domestic product (GDP) is
forecast to grow by four per cent.

Long Term Care Home For Seniors
A group in Toronto, is
looking into the choices facing Seniors looking for long
term care. Members of the group include Dr. Terry
D'Silva, Debbie Araujo, Cellie Gonsalves, Margaret
D'Souza, Zulema de Souza, Eric de Souza,Al Mathias, and
several others. They have realized that the most
important aspect seniors face is loneliness. Even though
they may be placed in a home which has good
care, services and facilities, if it does not have other
like-minded, culturally compatible seniors with whom
they can converse, meet, get together, pray or have
companionship and fun, they will tend to feel very
lonely. With this in mind they have have taken the
initiative and invite all those interested to attend a
meeting on February 19, 2006 at a long term care
facility. Please see our events section for the details.

Welfare section of this issue.

McGuinty must ask for
Takhar's resignation
QUEEN'S PARK,
ON, Jan. 4 /CNW/ - Progressive Conservative Party Leader
John Tory today called on Dalton McGuinty to live up to
his promised standards for cabinet ministers and ask
Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar to resign. "It
is clear that Minister Takhar has breached the Members
Integrity Act and Dalton McGuinty should ask him to
resign," said Tory. "Today, for the first time in
Ontario's history, our province's Integrity Commissioner
has formally reprimanded a sitting member of Cabinet. He
has found that the Minister of Transportation has
breached the rules governing the behaviour of elected
members."
Tory commended Integrity Commissioner Coulter Osbourne
on his extensive seven-month investigation into the
matter and his candor. Tory originally asked the
Integrity Commission to look into Minister Takhar's
conduct on June 15, 2005.

Iran committed to
India gas deal Iran says it remains committed to a gas
pipeline project with India and Pakistan, despite US
disapproval.
Deputy oil
minister MH Nejad-Hosseinian said after two days of
talks in Delhi that he expected Iran to begin oil
deliveries to India by 2011. The $6bn project is seen as
crucial for India which relies heavily on fuel imports
for its fast-growing economy. India, Pakistan and Iran
say they plan to finalise the deal in June next year and
to start building in 2007. The 2,600km (1,620-mile)
pipeline would cross Pakistan to reach India and is
expected to earn Pakistan millions of dollars in transit
fees. The US, which accuses Iran of seeking nuclear
arms, objects to the project, which will benefit Iran
financially. Mr Nejad-Hosseinian said: "I do not think
Pakistan and India will yield to pressure from the
United States. This pipeline will bring peace to the
region." Indian petroleum secretary SC Tripathi said
India wanted "a world-class project and gas
availability... at affordable prices". But he said
differences still had to be resolved over the pricing of
the gas. Further talks between the three countries are
scheduled for March 2006, when a draft agreement on the
structure of the project, pricing formula and other
areas is expected to be agreed upon.

China's growth
looks set to continue - Analysis
By Will Smale
BBC News business reporter
To appreciate just how quickly China's
economy grew in 2005, you only have to witness the
constant lines of giant cargo ships and oil tankers
steaming in and out of its ports as fast as they can be
handled.
Alternatively, visit Beijing, Shanghai or one of the
other big Chinese cities to see ongoing construction
projects on a huge scale. Closer to home for most of us,
simply look at the back of your newest piece of
electronic equipment and it will more often than not say
"Made in China". Or ask a stressed US or European trade
official what they think of 2005's surge in Chinese
clothing and textile exports. Whichever way you choose
to look at it, China's growing economic might was one of
the main economic stories of 2005.The question now is
whether this can continue at the same pace in 2006, or
whether a number of contributing factors could throw the
giant Chinese economy off-course.

NEW YEAR cheer with lots of fear
PANJIM: The lull that has
been witnessed this tourist season is a cause of concern more
for the locals, whose livelihood depends on it, than the rich
and established entrepreneurs from other states, who see Goa
as an investment. However, Christmas week culminating with
the New Year
celebrations saw a deluge of tourists flocking to our little
state. The statistics in the tourist inflow for this season
shot up massively during the last few days of 2005 and has
fallen within the first two days of 2006. This reveals that,
while foreign tourists start visiting the state from the
months of September to October right up to February, Goa has
somewhat become a permanent New Year destination for Indian
tourists. (GT) |

Tourism paying heavy price for overpricing!
PANJIM: Today, if you are a tourist planning a
holiday in Goa, you have to be prepared to bleed -
literally of your money. If insiders in the tourism
industry are to be believed, then season 2005-06, so far,
has been a dismal flop. During mid-December, which is the
'cut-off period' for the big hotels to rent out their
unused rooms that were booked by tour operators, many
hotels in desperation have even lowered their fares. Could
this be the time then for the industry to realise that in
the hype created over 'Brand Goa', they may have
overpriced it. (Andrew Pereira, GT) |

Houses of The Lord
Goa's churches have
stood as a testimony of its architectural brilliance and
history. A state where the churches speak for themselves
and finally someone has taken the pains to research about
these churches that form a very large and real part of
Goa. The study of churches has a long history and Jose
Lourenco has aspired to give you a book that delves deeper
into the study of the facades of architecture in churches
- The Parish Churches of Goa, A study of facade
Architecture. Lourenco's book is a documentation of all
the 158 parish churches with facade photographs, brief
history, plans, diagrams and sketches and other useful
information. There are also beautiful pictures of all
these churches taken by Pantaleao Fernandes. The book has
been
published by Amazing Goa Publications and is priced at

Promote Goan identity, Jamir tells non-resident Goans
PANAJI,
Jan 3: The two-day third Vishwa Gomantak Sammelan, a
world-wide Goans' convention, was inaugurated today by the
Governor, Mr SC Jamir, at the Kala Academy. The convention
received not so encouraging response. While the conference
convenor, Mr Dinar Bhatkar, said around 47 NRIs and around
100 NRGs had registered with the convention secretariat
just at the beginning of the convention, a handout said
that nearly 200 Goans from different countries are
participating in the two-day event, which is aimed at
strengthening cultural roots of Goan diaspora. The
Governor said the Sammelan provides not only an
opportunity for the Goans to meet their near and dear
ones, but also acts as a platform for the participants to
interact with each other for preserving, promoting and
propagating their identity. (NT)

East Goan Seniors Association Christmas Dinner Dance - 2005
By :
Netto Noronha
The Toronto East Goan Seniors Association (TEGSA) Christmas
dance held on December 17,2005 was the final club activity of the
year. The many accolades received testify to the very enjoyable
and well organized occasion.
Full credit must obviously go to Elsie Fernandes and our committee
who worked as a team to select the spacious and glamorous
Macedonian Banquet Hall in Thorncliffe.
The sit-down meal with complimentary wines was universally
acknowledged as excellent and the grace before meal was unique in
the fact that every table had a recital that was sung together to
praise and thank the Lord.
A huge new banner with our logo was unfurled and hung prominently
on the main wall.
In welcoming members and guests, our President Claude Gomes
narrated that we had completed two great
years in which we had accomplished much, most notably the “Taste
of Goa” in May of 2005. The membership grew from 250 to over 400
and the Association’s financial affairs were sound. He expressed
his deepest gratitude to the members of the committee and the many
volunteers for giving so much of themselves throughout the year
and making the Christmas dance a sparkling success. The speech
was deliberately short and sweet so that
everyone could get on the floor and enjoy the yesteryear tunes of
Fredrick’s one man band. The acoustics and choice selection of
music were the ingredients that made this function one that will
forever linger in our minds.
Emcee Hubert Pereira, always at his gregarious best, did well to
keep the occasion moving smoothly while distributing the many
prizes donated by the Club.
Response to the sale of raffle tickets was tremendous and the
pleasantly high sum of money will be donated to the earthquake
victims of India and Pakistan.
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the Lancers, organized
by Elsie Fernandes, performed by three teams, well choreographed
by Alu/ Eva Carvalho and Antu/Elsa Saldanha. A standing ovation
coupled with an encore clearly mesmerised the crowd.
The dance reluctantly ended with a giveaway of the beautiful
centrepieces and mementos to everyone present.
We can now look forward to 2006 and especially the next Christmas
Dance.

Alberta to
Lead the Rest of Canada in Economic Performance for the Next
Decade
CALGARY, Jan. 4 /CNW/ -
High energy prices, together with increased production and
investment in oil sands projects, mean Alberta should continue
to lead the rest of Canada in economic performance over the
next decade, according to a new paper from the BMO Financial
Group Economics Department. The paper, entitled "Alberta's
Long-Range Outlook: 'Oil's Well'", assesses Alberta's economic
outlook compared with the rest of the nation over the next
decade. "Alberta's stellar economic and fiscal fundamentals
provide a solid base for future growth," according to Rick
Egelton, Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist, BMO
Financial Group. "Barring a collapse of energy prices, the
province is poised to widen its economic and competitive lead
against the rest of the nation."
The paper states that Alberta's economy, measured in constant
dollars, will grow 0.9 percentage points faster than Canada's
economy, on average, between 2005 and 2015. "Living standards,
already the highest in the nation, will increase dramatically,"
stated Mr. Egelton. "Alberta's nominal GDP per
capita will increase from the current 45 per cent above the
national level to 55 per cent by 2015." |

Economic Predictions for Canada in 2006
|
 |
Professor Joseph D’Cruz
in Toronto Star – Jan, 1, 2006 |
|
1. Slowdown in economy spurred by U.S. downturn: Result fewer
exports to U.S. and less demand for Canadian commodities.
2. Investing in technology would not only reduce dependency on
U.S. but help Canadian firms make up difference by increasing
trade with China.
3. Tough times for auto sector: An estimated 15,000 loss of
jobs in trio of GM-Ford- Chrysler.
4. Foreign takeover of Canadian firms to grow. Nortel and
Alberta-based energy companies likely candidates for foreign
takeover. |

Looking for a Long Term Care Home for our Seniors
By: "Al Mathias" <almathias@rogers.com>
03 Jan 2006, 04:02:46 PM
A small group of us, interested in identifying a
selection of prescreened Long Term Care Homes for our
Seniors, has been meeting and discussing this important
matter since the beginning of last year. We realized
that one, if not the, most important aspect that our
seniors face is loneliness. Even though they may be
placed in a home which has good care, services and
facilities, if it does not have other like-minded,
culturally compatible seniors with whom they can
converse, meet, get together, pray or have companionship
and fun, they will tend to feel very lonely. With that
in mind our group has been exploring the possibilities
of being able to come up with plausible solutions.

Survey:
Acquiring New Skills Tops New Year's Wish List at Work
TORONTO, Jan.
3 /CNW/ - New Year's resolutions typically include
promises to eat healthier, exercise regularly or spend
more time with family. But if managers could have one wish
at work, it would be to develop a new skill. This was the
number one career-related resolution for 40 per cent of
executives surveyed recently. The survey includes responses
from 100 senior Canadian executives --including those from
human resources, finance and marketing departments --with
the Canada's 1,000 largest companies. It was conducted by
an independent
research firm and developed by Accountemps, the world's
first and largest specialized staffing service for
temporary accounting, finance and bookkeeping
professionals. Executives were asked, "If you were to make
a career-related New Year's resolution, what would it be?"

Campaign offers another chance to quit smoking
VANCOUVER, Jan. 4
/CNW/ - The Canadian Cancer Society says do not despair
if you have already slipped in your effort to quit
smoking in the New Year, because National Non-Smoking
Week, Jan. 15 to 21, offers would-be quitters another
chance to butt out for good. "Stay positive even if your
initial attempt to kick the habit failed," says BC and
Yukon Division CEO Barbara Kaminsky."The most important
action you can take to improve your health - at any age
and at any time of the year - is to become a
non-smoker." Quitting smoking can be hard. People often
make several attempts before they are successful.
Despite the challenges, says Kaminski, every year
thousands of Canadians successfully quit smoking."
Friends, family, and loved ones play an important role
in helping anyone they know who smokes or is trying to
quit."

HealthWrap: Vitamin D, for Death-Defying
From Monsters and Critics.com
By Dan Olmsted
Dec 28, 2005, 19:00 GMT
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Seldom has a
life-saving prescription come so simply or so cheaply:
Get enough vitamin D daily and cut your risk of some
cancers by up to half. That`s the good news from a study
by cancer specialists at the University of California,
San Diego, Medical Center. The bad news is that --
because the main source of vitamin D is sunlight and
many of us have begun avoiding it -- many people aren't
getting enough. \'For example, breast cancer will strike
one in eight American women in their lifetime. Early
detection using mammography reduces mortality rates by
approximately 20 percent. But use of vitamin D might
prevent this cancer in the first place,\' said co-author
Cedric F. Garland, a professor at UCSD`s cancer center.
