10 of 48 candidates of
South Asian origin make it to Ottawa
Most stalwart South Asian
politicians are back in Parliament
By Ela Dutt
http://www.newsindia-times.com/2006/02/03/canada12-133947.html
Most of the stalwart South Asian-Canadian politicians
found their way back to parliament Jan. 23, when nearly 65
percent of Canadian voters went to the polls to throw out
Prime Minister Paul Martin and his Liberal Party's 12-year
rule and bring in yet another minority government, this
time led by the Conservative Party of Stephen Harper.
Ten of the 48 candidates of South Asian origin, made their
way back to Ottawa in what were largely predictable
elections by the time a series of polls had been conducted
during the campaigns. But some important South Asians will
be in the Conservative ruling benches this time round and
some important South Asians will move to the opposite
side.
In the 308-member House, the Conservative Party won 124
seats, the Liberals went down to 103, the separatist Bloc
Quebecois of Quebec province got a hefty 51 seats and the
party that made strides was the left of center New
Democratic Party of Jack Layton that won 29 seats, now in
a more powerful position to moderate any arch-Conservative
moves from the winners.

US
border crossing initiative is a step in the right
direction
|
VANCOUVER, Jan. 17 /CNW/ - The Council of Tourism
Associations of BC (COTA) welcomes news of US border
crossing initiatives to encourage travelers from the US
to Canada, but warns that it may not be enough to
address border crossing issues.
In an advisory released this morning, the US Department
of State and Department of Homeland Security outlined a
secure, less expensive passport card for US land
borders. The card, which will be issued in late 2006,
will serve as an alternative to the traditional
passport, which is more expensive.
The cost of traditional passports is around $430 US for
a family of five. The new passport cards could reduce
that cost by an estimated 60%, allowing Americans to
pass back and forth between our two countries with more
ease when crossing at land borders.

Pope's first
encyclical underlines 'back to basics' theme of papacy
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI's first
encyclical underlined the 'back to basics' approach of
his papacy, taking one of Christianity's fundamental
beliefs and illuminating it with deeper analysis. In its
title, 'Deus Caritas Est' or 'God Is Love,' and
throughout its 71 pages, the encyclical presented the
faith in a clear and positive perspective. The core
mission of Christianity, it said, is to help people
accept God's love and share it, recognizing that true
love involves a willingness to make sacrifices.

Time For Change - Goan Expat
organizations
By: "George Pinto" <georgejpinto@yahoo.com>
Posted : "Tanzanite Goans" <goans_tanzanite@yahoogroups.com>
Sunday, January 29, 2006
It is worth asking what useful purpose Goan organizations
in the Diasporaserve? 40-60 years ago with fairly
significant Goan immigration out of Africa/Goa/India
toEngland/Portugal/Canada and to a lesser extent to
USA/Australia there was a need for Goan
socialorganizations. Their annual events provided a forum
for people to socialize and meet, in come cases survive
the challenges of their new land. A typical Goan
(Catholic) calendar of events which has not changed in
decades:
1. Dance.
2. Picnic.
3. SFX feast.
4. Children's Christmas event.
5. Another occasion for a dance (pick some date).
Today, the calendar needs to be updated if expat Goans
want to modernize, integrate and come of age (the reasons
in some case are obvious but too lengthy to discuss here).
This change is needed if Goan organizations are going to
truly serve their community, engage youth and have a
future. In no particular order of importance, a current
calendar may look like:
1. Investing in your future - health, education, finance,
culture.
2. Self and community development - responsibilities and
duties to
yourself and others.
3. Understanding your roots/history in the larger context
of world
history.
4. Securing justice and equality for all in an
interconnected, global
world.
5. Maintaining your culture while living in the melting
pot.
6. Goa's rich religious history - understanding various
Goan traditions,
including the secular tradition.

Holy
Hour held at Bogmalo church |
|
CORTALIM, Jan 29: A Holy Hour in
reparation for the desecration of Holy Eucharist was held at
the Bogmalo Church on January 29 evening. Reference was made
during the sermon to the large number of thefts taking place
in the churches and chapels and the failure of the police in
nabbing the culprits and also neglect on the part of the
government. It may be recalled that on early Friday morning,
miscreants wrenched the sacred tabernacle off the altar at
the St Cosme and Damian Church and flung it on a hillock
behind the church.(H)

the Mando Festival

|
|
PORVORIM, Jan
28: Industries and Education minister Luizinho Faleiro and
Art and Culture minister Digamber Kamat, who were present at
the 39th Mando Festival organised by Goa Cultural and Social
Centre at The Majestic hotel here this evening, promised
their full whole-hearted support to the preservation and
promotion of the rich Goan cultural through the Konkani
manddo. Luizinho Faleiro promised a sum of Rs.1,00,000 and
suggested that henceforth the preliminary rounds should be
held in the villages and the final show in the city,
preferably Margao. To conserve our tradition and culture
Digamber Kamat said that he had sanctioned Rs.1,00,000 for
the Mando Festival this year, and assured that if there are
"good groups" he will help them to hold the festival in other
cities like Mumbai, where Goans live in large numbers.

Dell Adds 5,000
India Jobs
From call centers to testing, and perhaps even
manufacturing, the No. 1 computer maker wants in on
India.
January 30, 2006
Dell said Monday it will add 5,000 jobs in India over
the next two years.
The Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker already has
a headcount of 10,000 employees in three locations
across India. A new call center, to open during April
of this year, will be established at a fourth location
and employ 700 to 1,000 people, according to Dell CEO
Kevin Rollins.
Dell is also considering setting up a manufacturing
center in India. Such a move could help boost the sale
of Dell computers in India, Mr. Rollins told reporters
after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh.
The company plans to double the staff at its product
development and testing center in Bangalore, which
currently employs 300 engineers. During Mr. Rollins'
previous visit to India in April 2005, he had said
Dell would make India a hub for the company's software
development and back-office work. |

As outsourcing evolves, so
does a city; Indian business leaders help gain a more equal

trivialmatters.blogspot.com)
PUNE : Before he supervised teams, wooed American
clients over dinner or sat in a Northern Virginia
boardroom alongside U.S. executives, Constancio
Fernandes wrote computer code for a living.
That's how it started in the late 1990s - American
businesses ordered up software applications, and Indian
programmers such as Fernandes dutifully delivered. But
somewhere along the way, Fernandes became more
confident and outspoken. He began questioning the
Americans and suggesting cheaper, faster ways to run
their businesses. They listened.
"Most of the companies in the U.S. used to see Indian
companies as sweatshops,'' said Fernandes, 33, who
began as a programmer but is now the director of
engineering at Reston, VA,-based Approva Corp.'s
offices here, supervising product-development teams,
tracking projects and improving engineering techniques.
"The changes have been phenomenal."

Canadian Singles Gripped by 'First-Move' Paralysis
New Harlequin Survey Reveals 75%
of Canadian Singles Afraid to Make First
Move
TORONTO, Jan. 25 /CNW/ - Hate making the first move?
Apparently so does everyone else - which might explain why
so many singles will remain single this Valentine's Day.
According to a new survey from Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.,
a whopping 75% of unattached Canadians admitted they have
met someone they were interested in but were too afraid to
make a move. More than 2,000 men and women from across
Canada and the U.S. participated in the survey as part of
the Harlequin Romance Report 2006, The Encounter.(1)
Respondents in 14 other countries were also polled on
select questions. While more than 85% of Canadian men and
women surveyed said they have no trouble meeting new
people, most admitted that a fear of rejection is what
prevents them from turning a first meeting into a first
date.
"Meeting new people isn't the hard part," said Katherine
Orr, Vice President, Harlequin Enterprises Ltd, one of the
world's leading publishers of women's fiction. "Everyday
we see people who catch our eye but rather than make
conversation, most of us grab a book or newspaper, play
with our cell phone, or look away - all reactions that
dramatically reduce the chance for interaction with new
people."

City of Toronto launches Apartment Standards website
http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/January2006/30/c1787.html?view=print
TORONTO, Jan.
30 /CNW/ - The City
of Toronto launched an Apartment Standards website today
to enhance public access to information about rental
apartment buildings in the city. The new site (www.toronto.ca/apartmentstandards)
posts details about compliance orders
issued, their status, information about inspections, and
other bylaw information.
The Apartment Standards website tracks multi-residential
buildings containing four or more self-contained rental
units. The site does not have information about properties
that are rooming houses, rental condominium units,
co-operative housing, row housing or bachelorettes.
"Property owners are responsible for complying with basic
apartment standards, and tenants have a right to decent
living conditions," said Mayor David Miller. "The new
Apartment Standards website provides residents with access
to information about buildings that have failed to comply
with City bylaws, and allows tenants to register and track
complaints."

Chew on this... four legged pals need dental check ups too
- Brush
up on dental care during National Pet Dental Health Month
-
TORONTO,
Jan. 30 /CNW/ - Pet oral health is a leading issue among
Canadian pets. In fact, 80 per cent of dogs and 70 per
cent of cats over age three will require dental care
during their lifetime.
This February brush up on pet oral care during National
Pet Dental Health Month (NPDHM). For the past 12 years,
the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), in
partnership with Hill's Pet Nutrition Canada, have
supported this program to ensure pet owners understand
that cats and dogs need proper, regular dental care - both
at home and by a professional veterinarian.
