Goa communal violence was pre-planned: probe report
http://www.theindiancatholic.com/news_read.asp?nid=1420
April 7, 2006

Panaji (ICNS) -- A fact finding report on the communal violence which rocked Goa in March says it was “well-planned strategy by political forces.”

The All India Milli Council (AIMC) that conducted the probe has called upon the government to bring out a white paper, to tell the people the truth about the violence in the twin towns of Sanvordem and Curchorem.

Addressing a press conference here, Supreme Court human rights lawyer Nandita Haksar said that the report “was to probe the root causes of communal violence.”

Attributing the violence to the rise of the “communal politics”, the report titled Broken Peace prepared by a four member team appointed by AIMC revealed that the violence was part of a well planned strategy by political forces to communalise Goan society.

The report covers the rise of communal politics in Goa, human rights violations of Muslims in Goa, the damaged mosques at Socorro and Ekta Nagar, Mapusa, both areas north of the Panaji.

With reference to the speeches made by the BJP party members, the report mentions that BJP members including the ex-chief minister Manohar Parrikar and local BJP MLA Ramrao Desai continue to spread the disinformation not only about the actual incident but about Muslims in general.

"They are fuelling hatred and anger against the Muslims by telling blatant lies, spreading false rumours and making defamatory statements," it said.

Referring to Parrikar’s speech on March 4, it mentions that “the former chief minister did not attempt to console the Muslims and his speech sent out the message that people responsible for the violence are the victims themselves.”

On the role of the administration during the violence, Haksar and her team mentioned that “the civil administration has not acted with the responsibility that is expected of them."

"It is true that the police did offer protection to Muslims gathered inside the Curchorem mosque when the violence started. However they failed to protect the property of the Muslims," it said.

The report further mentions that “the Congress party has no programme for countering the communalism and many of its MLAs and members are former members of the BJP."

The team has asked the government to have a programme against communalism and initiate a public debate on the issue of growing number of immigrants, besides recommending some suggestions to minimize communal confrontation.

Turning back the clock

He believes that for writing fiction, it is necessary for a writer to journey back into his childhood. That probably is one of the reasons that writer Victor Rangel-Ribeiro loves coming back to
Goa from his home in America. "You get innumerable stories from the little incidents and the many characters from the past - your own uncles and aunts are the most amazing characters. That was the tip given to me by renowned writer, Mulk Raj Anand, and because of him I became a serious writer," says the 80-year-old award-winning fiction writer, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro. Writing was his hobby right from childhood and this also led Ribeiro to start a writers' club during his college days in Mumbai, said the writer while reading from his book "Tivolem" at Cafe Literati in Calangute. Work for uplift of Konkani, Goans urged
MARGAO, Apr 10: The chief guest for Fr Freddy J da Costa Writer's award, Mr Zito Almeida, said Goans had to work in tandem for the uplift of Konkani language without discriminating it on the basis of script. While presenting the award for the year 2005 to Mr John Gomes Kokoy, Mr Almeida said, "Roman script has a first place in the Goans' heart and the young generation has to stress more on Roman script. The felicitation function was organised by the Dalgado Konknni Akademy. Mr Tomazinho, who spoke on the occasion, said that late Fr Freddy was a good writer and had worked hard to bring up the Konkani language through his writings. The award winner, Mr Kokoy, said that Roman script was an international script and needed to be honoured in our own state. "All our youngsters should focus on Konkani language and Roman script in particular," said Mr Kokoy, who has written and swung over 3,000 songs besides his several acclaimed tiatrs. (NT)

VM Salgaocar and VS Dempo have joined hands to launch a new transshipper (these play a key role in the ore export trade) and it has been called M V Goan Pride. Large newspaper adverts, particularly in the mining linked section of the Goa media, congratulate both firms on the launch of the transshipper by chief minister Pratapsing Rane on Tuesday. Yesterday's papers highlighted the visits by teams from Japan, South Korea and China -- all major iron-ore importers from Goa. Navhind says the "state-of-art" technology was used to create the new-generation transshipper with a storage capacity of 123,000 tonnes in her holds and a loading capacity of about 75,000 tonnes per day. It has the the capacity to load Panamax vessels in one day and larger-sized cape vessles of upto 300,000 DWT in three to four days, brining Goa "at par with the loading facilities of leading iron ore exporting countries like Australia and Brazil".
