32 Year Low
Decline in Canada’s Unemployment Rate
Labour Force Survey
Stats Canada -March 2006
Employment increased by 51,000 in March, bringing total
gains from 12 months ago to 330,000 or 2.1%. The
unemployment rate declined 0.1percentage points to 6.3%,
a 32-year low.The employment increase in March pushed
the Canadian employment rate up 0.1 percentage points to
a record 62.9%. The employment rate is the share of the
working age population that is employed.
Canada has traditionally had higher employment rates
than most other countries in the Organization for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). However,
with stronger employment growth in this country, the
rate in Canada has pulled further ahead of the OECD
average in recent years. Canadians aged 16 and over have
been more likely than Americans
to be employed since November 2002. Most of the
employment gain in March was the result of an upswing of
44,000 in full-time work. This continues the long-term
trend toward full-time employment growth in this
country. Despite monthly fluctuations, part-time
employment has remained around the same level for the
last three years.

Commentary
Fuel Flickering The
Flames Of Faith
Editorial
From Western Catholic Reporter
http://www.wcr.ab.ca/columns/editorials/2006/editorial041706.shtml |
The glorious celebrations of Holy Thursday through Easter
Sunday are now over. Those celebrations are the annual
highpoint of worship. They raise us above the ordinary and
provide glimpses of the divine. The Easter season
stretches for 50 days, but its emotional pinnacle has
already passed.
For those who have come through the RCIA, the stakes are
even higher. They have been in the process of discovering
the most basic dimension of life, of an almost-giddy
excitement over the realization of God's loving concern
for and presence in our lives. Now, there is the potential
for a post-Easter letdown.
What to do now? How does one keep the fire alive?
The first realization must be that the journey is not
over. It has barely begun. The fire that must be kept
alive is not the fire of emotional excitement, but the
fire of fidelity.
Faith is like a marriage. If love is rooted only in desire
and good times, it will surely pass. But if there is a
genuine, abiding commitment to the other person, it will
endure hard times and emerge stronger.
Further, if love devolves into simply doing one's duty or
obeying the commands of the Church, it will lose its life.
It is not enough to be loyal and obedient to the Church;
the Church must steal your heart. The Christian will root
himself in the soul of his beloved and make her experience
his own. He will love her past and meditate on her
history, revering her tradition and exploring it deeply.
He will come to be intimate with the saints who lived,
thought and suffered for Christ in the Church.
Having come to love the Church's tradition and know her
saints, he will not entertain the idea that there once was
a golden age of the Church that allows us to condemn the
Church of today for its weaknesses.
Indeed, the Christian will never set himself above the
Church as its judge. Theologian Henri de Lubac once wrote,
"Far from passing judgment on (the Church), he will allow
her to judge him and he will agree gladly to all the
sacrifices demanded by her unity."
Having made one's faith the cornerstone of one's life, the
Christian will not see society's conventions or his own
ideas as main sources of enlightenment. He will look to
Peter for guidance. Peter, the bumbling fisherman who once
betrayed Jesus, but who, under the power of the Holy
Spirit, became the Rock.
Many consider the exercise of authority in the Church to
be tyranny. That opinion must be resisted at all costs.
The Church is not a human institution, but a divine one.
It is Christ's body, living and breathing here today. Our
ongoing union with the Church is not a heavy weight. It is
the ongoing consummation of our love. Obedience to her is
a cause for joy.
St. Ambrose once reflected, "Where Peter is, there the
Church is." So, look for Peter and be faithful with him.
John Paul II, our recent Peter, once wrote that those who
walk by the Spirit "feel an interior urge - a genuine
necessity and no longer a form of coercion - not to stop
at the minimum demands of the law, but to live them in
their fullness" (The Splendour of Truth, 18).
To live the resurrection always means going beyond the
minimum. This way is an "uncertain and fragile journey,"
the late pope said. But it is possible with God's grace.
To be a convert is a special thing. In the final analysis,
however, the conversion that matters most is the
day-to-day conversion at which we, again and again, choose
or reject Christ. Fidelity to Christ is possible only
through love. It is a love that must be fed through
meditation, the sacraments, spiritual reading and acts of
service.
The celebrations of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter
bring us to the core of our faith. They can enliven us.
But for faith to continue, it must be fed. - Glen Argan

Turning back the clock
Vagator Beach
He believes that for writing fiction, it is necessary for a
writer to journey back into his childhood. That probably is
one of the reasons that writer Victor Rangel-Ribeiro loves
coming back to
Goa
from his home in America. "You get innumerable stories from
the little incidents and the many characters from the past -
your own uncles and aunts are the most
amazing characters. That was the tip given to me by renowned
writer, Mulk Raj Anand, and because of him I became a serious
writer," says the 80-year-old award-winning fiction writer,
Victor Rangel-Ribeiro. Writing was his hobby right from
childhood and this also led Ribeiro to start a writers' club
during his college days in Mumbai, said the writer while
reading from his book "Tivolem" at Cafe Literati in Calangute.

Work for
uplift of Konkani, Goans urged
MARGAO,
Apr 10: The chief guest for Fr Freddy J da Costa Writer's
award, Mr Zito Almeida, said Goans had to work in tandem for
the uplift of Konkani language without discriminating it on
the basis of script. While presenting the award for the year
2005 to Mr John Gomes Kokoy, Mr Almeida said, "Roman script
has a first place in the Goans' heart and the young generation
has to stress more on Roman script. The felicitation function
was organised by the Dalgado Konknni Akademy. Mr Tomazinho,
who spoke on the occasion, said that late Fr Freddy was a good
writer and had worked hard to bring up the Konkani language
through his writings. The award winner, Mr Kokoy, said that
Roman script was an international script and needed to be
honoured in our own state. "All our youngsters should focus on
Konkani language and Roman script in particular," said Mr
Kokoy, who has written and swung over 3,000 songs besides his
several acclaimed tiatrs. (NT) |

TWO MAJOR MINING HOUSES
in Goa,
VM Salgaocar and VS
Dempo have joined hands to launch a new transshipper (these
play a key role in the ore export trade) and it has been
called M V Goan Pride. Large newspaper adverts, particularly
in the mining linked section of the Goa media, congratulate
both firms on the launch of the transshipper by chief
minister Pratapsing Rane on Tuesday. Yesterday's papers
highlighted the visits by teams from Japan, South Korea and
China -- all major iron-ore importers from Goa. Navhind says
the "state-of-art" technology was used to create the
new-generation transshipper with a storage capacity of
123,000 tonnes in her holds and a loading capacity of about
75,000 tonnes per day. It has the the capacity to load
Panamax vessels in one day and larger-sized cape vessles of
upto 300,000 DWT in three to four days, brining Goa "at par
with the loading facilities of leading iron ore exporting
countries like Australia and Brazil". (Navhind Times) |

Reverend Father Archilles (Archie) D'Souza (1942-2006):
The priest who did not go gentle
into the good night.
Excerpt from Daily Times
By Mahim Maher
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2006\04\01\story_1-4-2006_pg12_12
KARACHI: In the early 1950s there was one
place in the city where Hindus, Christians and Muslims would bump into each
other for one purpose. This place was the D' Souza family wine shop in Saddar
where a young Archie D'Souza first experienced the way the people of these three
faiths interacted. Small wonder then, that when he was 18 years old, he decided
that he wanted to become a priest. And over the years, Father Archie went on to
become one of the strongest proponents of interfaith harmony. In fact, not only
did he pursue a B.A. in Islamic studies at Jamia Millia, Malir, in 1969 but he
also went on to do an M.A. in Islamic Theology from the University of Edinburgh,
Scotland, and later a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology at Gregorian University, Rome,
in 1976. With his death last week, the Christians, Muslims and Hindus of Karachi
and Pakistan have lost a valuable diplomat.

Raj Kumar; South Indian
Movie Star
Associated Press
Thursday, April 13, 2006; B06
Raj Kumar, 77, a onetime child actor who became one of south
India's most beloved movie stars and later was kidnapped by a
notorious bandit, died of cardiac arrest April 12 at a hospital in
Bangalore. Mr. Kumar, whose name was also spelled Rajkumar,
appeared in more than 200 Kannada-language films in five decades
and had millions of fiercely devoted fans. Although he largely
gave up acting in the mid-1990s, he remained one of the region's
best-loved figures.
Hundreds of distraught fans rioted in Bangalore when police
prevented them from forcing their way into the late actor's home,
New Delhi Television reported. Police used bamboo canes to drive
away angry fans who shattered the windows of several buses and set
a half-dozen cars and motorcycles on fire.
The actor's body was later moved to a large public park in the
heart of the city to allow fans to pay their respects. The
regional government in southern India has decided to give Mr.
Kumar a state funeral, according to Press Trust of India.

Help To Promote Goan Authors
From: Judy Luis-Watson JLuisW@aol.com
To: Romero Dias romero.dias04@sympatico.ca
I'm writing to you at the suggestion of my father and your
friend, Jerry Luis. He spoke highly of you as a kind person
who gets things done and who is well-connected in the Goan
community. I have had the good fortune of reading several
books by Goan and other writers who have written about life
in Goa and East Africa. My husband and I as well as my
father have not only enjoyed reading their work but, in the
process, also gained a deeper understanding of Goan and East
African cultural history.
It would be great if you could help to get the word out to
the Goan community so more folks may have access to the
books. Who knows, they might even want to invite the writers
to do readings or lead workshops at special events but
that's getting ahead of ourselves.
To avoid being in the middle of things, I would like to ask
three writers to contact you directly with their information
- Ben Antao lives in Toronto, Lino Leitao lives in Montreal,
and Peter Nazareth lives in Iowa. Please let me know if this
would be okay with you.
Thank you very much,
Judy Luis-Watson Bowie, Maryland, USA

Book announcement: Goan
migrant motherhood in New Zealand
From: "Edwin de Souza" <mozpoz@ihug.co.nz>
Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 1:27 AM
To: [goans_tanzanite]:
Ruth DeSouza's research on the experiences of Goan women becoming
mothers in a new country has now been published.
'Walking upright here' is based on Ruth's Masters research and
explores the dual transition of migration and motherhood from the
perspective of Goan women living in New Zealand.
Ruth is excited about the new book book because she feels that it
is important to make the findings available to anyone who wants to
know more about Goan culture and learn about the experiences of
the Goan diaspora:
"Living in New Zealand I often found it hard to get hold of other
people's work and so I wanted to make sure that people with an
interest in Goans all over the world could get a copy"
The book is published by Muddy Creek Press and can be ordered

Sharing our love at Easter ,
Message from TEGSA's Executive Committee
|
|
Message from Fifty Five Plus Goan Association
" On behalf of our Executive Committee", may we extend a hand
of friendship to all on this 'Blessed Easter Celebration' and
in doing so, grant that we, who commemorate and reverence the
sorrows this past Lenten season , may experience the blessed
effect of " Thy Passion of our Lord" in our homes in our
hearts. In rejoicing in this great Celebration, still we hope
that this Easter greeting will impart the love, warmth and the
thanks that come from our hearts to each and every one of you
as you continue in your "journey" with a sincere resignation
to the Will of God."
We wish to thank you for your kind support accorded us in the
past and trust it will continue into the future. A Blessed
Easter.

Goan Seniors Revive "The
Lancers"
The Toronto East Goan Seniors (TEGSA)
gave an elegant performance of "The Lancers" at their 2005
Christmas Event, which has sparked new interest in this dance
and revived memories of long ago. Videographer Uvy Lopes DVD
of the performance is in high demand.
Preparations and practice for the performance began few months
earlier when Elsie Fernandes, Anthony(Antu) & Elsa Saldanha &
Aloysius (Alu) & Eva Carvalho recollected the moves of times
past and arranged the choreography and music. Then came the
setting up of the dance teams and rehearsals co-ordinated by
Elsie, Antu & Alu. The result of all this hard work was an
entertaining performance which many will long remember. Where
do they go from here ? The group is on the lookout for the
original sound music and repertoire of parts 4 & 5 of this
group dance.

The truth about exams
LONDON, ON,
April 11 /CNW/ - As classes at universities end and exams begin
the following item may be of interest...
SKIP THE JAVA FOR PEAK EXAM PERFORMANCE
Students who want a boost of energy to get them through
exams should skip the coffee and run around the block instead
says Peter Lemon, kinesiology professor at The University of
Western Ontario. "About 10 to 15 minutes of vigorous exercise
will stimulate blood flow to the brain, providing the same
effect as a cup of coffee," he says. In addition to coffee,
Lemon advises against fuelling up on highly-caffeinated energy
drinks. He says these products contain no carbohydrates and
therefore provide no real energy, just a feeling of energy from
the caffeine.

Check Up From The Neck Up

Take a load off your
mind, GTA - Get the checkup!
TORONTO, April 3 /CNW/ - Today marks a turning point for
the stressed out people in the GTA struggling with the ups
and downs of modern life. And it's a milestone for the one
in five who are directly affected by anxiety and mood
disorders. The Mood Disorders Association of Ontario is
launching Check Up From The Neck Up, a massive test pilot
mental health awareness campaign right here in the GTA to
help people take control of their mental health. We
challenge
300,000 residents over our 3-month multi media campaign -
featuring subway and Go-train posters, radio and print ads
- to take the checkup test for a snapshot of their mental
health. It is simple, private and self-administered and if
a person chooses to get more information or help MDAO has
set into motion a team involving the Ontario Psychological
Association, the Department of Psychiatry at Sunnybrook,
The Ontario College of Family Physicians and scores of
other agencies. "However we can't do it without your help,
getting the word out," says Karen Liberman, Executive
Director MDAO and spokesperson for the campaign. "Anyone
with a fever wouldn't think twice about taking their
temperature. But ask someone if they've done anything
recently to safeguard their mental health - something like
we're asking - and they might look at you like you're
crazy."
Toronto Mayor David Miller is appearing on one of the
posters in the campaign. "Taking the checkup is a great
idea," said Mayor Miller, who is lending his support to
the campaign. "It's a quick, easy and confidential way for
people to assess their mental health and access invaluable
resources. It can be as important as taking charge of your
physical health yet too often goes forgotten or gets
overlooked." The campaign formally kicks off Tuesday,
April 4 at noon at BCE place, Allen Lambert Galleria,
entrance off 181 Bay St. On hand will be hockey
great Ron Ellis, Liberman and two time Olympic gold medal
winner Jayna Heford.
