Goa trying to woo more tourists
Dated 2006-05-09

Panaji: Facing tough competition from various tourist destinations, the Goa Tourism department has invited bids from various agencies to professionally market the state to global visitors.

"We want to market Goa as a tourist destination to attract more tourists. We have a challenge to tap tourists even during the lean season," Director Tourism Department Sandeep Jacques told PTI here.

He said there is no specific competitor for Goa (within India). "However, there is need to market the state more professionally as a 365-day holiday destination," he said.

PULSATING PERFORMANCE
SIOLIM, May 7:
Belting out a range of superb songs in a variety of languages, Goa's pop singer Olavo thrilled young and old Siolkars, who had gathered to hear him, on the second day of the "Siolim Summer Festival" here this evening. Olavo, privileged to be selected by maestro Chris Perry, has emerged into a top class crowd-puller.

His entire repertoire of foot-tapping hits mostly drawn from his hit audio album "Io, Io, Moga" dwelt around love songs arrowed towards young hearts, but thoroughly enjoyed by seniors as well for the candid lyrics and Goan music by Joaquim D'Souza. Olavo was backed by his youthful dance troupe. Getting as close as possible to his audience, getting people to come up stage and mixing with the audience, makes him a performer apart, besides, of course, his

Canacona.net launched
A comprehensive website http://www.canacona.net covering various facets of Canacona taluka, on the southern tip of Goa, was launched recently. The website is designed, developed and maintained by Consult Infosys, Margao. Canacona taluka, which has remained the nerve-centre of our hoary culture and the very bosom of Mother Nature, was ceded to the Portuguese by the Raja of Saunde in 1763. As eminent independent journalist Frederick Noronha puts, it, it is one of the few places that treasure a semblance of the Goa of yester-years. The area also boasts some of the state's most outstanding sceneries with its indented coastline that includes the reigning queen of Goa's beaches - Palolem. (GT)
