Agents watched bomb plot suspects
for more than 6 months
Thu, 08 Jun 2006
Excerpt from CBC News
There are new revelations about the alleged bombing plot by
a group of Toronto-area men that led to a massive police
sweep last week, in court documents made exclusively
available to CBC News.
Alleged bomb-plot suspects were in a Brampton courtroom on
Tuesday. According to the documents, the group is alleged
to have been well-advanced on its plan to attack a number
of Canadian institutions, possibly including the Houses of
Parliament, the RCMP and the CBC.
The documents repeat what was reported earlier this week,
that the plotters hoped to take federal politicians in
Ottawa hostage, and demand both the withdrawal of Canadian
forces from Afghanistan and the release of some prisoners
in Canadian jails. The alleged conspirators intended to
decapitate hostages as a means of gaining their demands.
But later, the documents claim, one of the members, Zakaria
Amara, 20, of Mississauga, Ont., became much more focused
on exploding bombs at the heart of Canada's financial
district, targeting the Toronto Stock Exchange, as well as
the Toronto headquarters of the Canadian Security
Intelligence Service and an unspecified military
installation.

Ontario To Protect Families'
Health With Tough New Standards Updated Air Standards Will
Better Protect Ontarians From Lead And Other Harmful
Substances
TORONTO, June 7 /CNW/
- The Ontario government is further protecting
the health of families, improving air quality and reducing
pollution by proposing tough new or updated standards for
15 harmful substances, Environment Minister Laurel Broten
announced today at the 2006 Smog Summit co-hosted by the
Clean Air Partnership and the City of Toronto.
"All Ontario families want to breathe cleaner, safer air,"
said Broten. "That is why we are moving forward with
consultation on air standards for 15 more toxic substances.
We need to be sure that our standards are based on the best
available science."
The government plans to consult on updating air standards
for 15 high-priority substances, including lead. Ontario is
proposing to review the limits for the 15 substances based
on improved scientific information, updated research on
associated health risks and new air dispersion models to
provide greater protection of public health and the
environment.

Daily Bread's Who's Hungry report illustrates depth of
hunger crisis
Survey examines hunger in the GTA and Daily Bread advances
solutions
TORONTO, June 6 /CNW/ -
Food bank use across the GTA has risen a dramatic 79% since
1995, according to the report Who's Hungry: 2006 Profile of
Hunger in the GTA released today at BCE Place. The results
of Daily Bread's annual survey paint a picture that cannot
be ignored of the struggles and financial plight of the
diverse population relying on food banks. The 894,017
people who accessed emergency food services last year
through GTA food banks, 38% of whom were children, would
not go hungry if the issue of poverty were addressed. So,
in conjunction with the report, Daily Bread advances the
Blueprint to
Fight Hunger.

WANTED: AN ASIAN PERSPECTIVE ON THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION
And stop organised drives towards conversion, reconversion
By Eduardo Faleiro
commissionernri_goa@rediffmail.com
Posted by: "Frederick Noronha (FN)" <fred@bytesforall.org>
To: "Goans Tanzanite"
goans_tanzanite@yahoogroups.com June 3, 2006
Excerpts:
Pope Benedict XVI is reported to have raised the question
of religious freedom at a recent meeting with our
Ambassador to the Vatican. At this meeting the Pope
praised India's traditions of freedom and inter-religious
harmony. Freedom of religion is the right to maintain
one's religion or to change it without being subjected to
any pressure or inducement.
Freedom of religion is protected by the Constitution of
India and is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Whilst freedom of religion is a basic human
right, proselytism receives universal condemnation.
Proselytism is defined as the use of unscrupulous methods
of persuasion such as material inducements, psychological
pressure or spiritual threats to compel a person to change
his or her religion.
Proselytism is opposed on several grounds; it attacks
other religious beliefs and practices and proclaims that
its own religion is the only way to salvation. It is often
supported by financial resources and marketing techniques
that make local religious activities seem second rate and
inferior.
The Catholic Church condemns proselytizing activities. The
Second Vatican Council, whilst defending freedom of
religion, denounced proselytism in very strong terms: "In
spreading religious faith and in introducing religious
practices, everyone ought at all times to refrain from any
manner of action which might seem to carry a hint of
coercion or a kind of persuasion that would be
dishonorable or unworthy, especially when dealing with
poor or uneducated people. Such a manner of action would
have to be considered as abuse of one’s own right and a
violation of the right of others."
The late Pope John Paul II often referred to the
Evangelical sects in Christianity and called them
"rapacious wolves devouring Catholics and causing
divisions and discord in our communities." John Paul II
stressed the danger of underestimating "a certain strategy
employing notable economic resources to crack Catholic
unity."

First-ever Konkani
translation of Bible
OLD
GOA: A history of sorts was created after the first
ever Roman script Konkani translation of the Holy Bible and
also the first ever Konkani book to have such a large print
order was released here on June 4. The 2,300-page book was
released by Archbishop of Goa, Filipe Neri
Ferrao, at the end of a largely attended Mass at the Se
Cathedral. The book had been under preparation for more than
ten years. The final editing of the book was done by Fr Manuel
Gomes, secretary of the Diocesan Commission for Biblical
Apostolate, helped by Fr Ave Maria Alphonso. The book was
printed at New Age Printers, owned by the diocese. Fr Adrian
Furtado, the manger of the press, informed that every volume
is hardbound and imported Bible paper has been used. The
initial order has been for 60,000 copies, out of which 10,000
are ready. A total of 40,000 pre-publication orders have been
subsidised at Rs.150 a copy, while the remaining 20,000 will
be sold at Rs.300. The credit for the printing of the first
ever Konkani Bible goes to the Diocese of Mangalore, which
brought it out, in Kannad script, in the year 2000. (GT) |

Mid-day meal lacks
flavour?
PANJIM, June 4: With
schools set to reopen, the Government's mid-day meal scheme
seems to lack the flavour in attracting
Parent-Teacher-Associations for implementation of the scheme
from June this year. While approximately 67,000 primary school
children from aided and Government schools are being covered
under the scheme, the budget proposal for extending the scheme
to financially weaker students from Std V-X has made no
headway. (H) |

“ A
FAMILY AFFAIR" TEGSA’s 2nd. ANNIVERSARY DANCE

larger view)
27th,
May,2006:These three words – elegant,
entertaining and enjoyable – could appropriately be used to
describe TEGSA’s 2nd, Anniversary Dance. A capacity gathering
of more then 230 members and guests graced the festive evening
at the Empire Banquet Hall in Scarborough. The hall was subtly
decorated with balloons and banners in the TEGSA colours,
creating an ambiance of warmth. The tone for the evening was
evident as members walked in to the sounds of soft piped
music. The cocktail hour was a Happy Hour when members mingled
and were treated to a variety plate of hors d’oeuvres, served
at their tables.
As a preamble to the ‘grace before meals’, Jean Andrade said a
special prayer – “…make our lives together as a family
meaningful, fulfilling and enjoyable”, she said. “We are
blessed to be part of such a wonderful family, such a great
and precious group of people. We ask you Lord to guide the new
Executive throughout the year, to face the challenges ahead.
Bless with wisdom and confidence the members so that they can
work successfully towards achieving their goals”
The scrumptious eight course Chinese meal, which catered to all
palettes, was different from the normal and was
commended as a very welcome change. The organizing committee
evenwent to fine detail to ensure that there were two prizes ,
when members broke open their fortune cookies. Soon after
dinner the band- FOCUS – played the Anniversary Waltz and the
dancing opened with President Al and his wife Jean. The
floor didn’t take long to be crowded. The band, who were in
their element, were eager to please and so was the D.J.
GODFATHER.
The highlight of the evening was the attendance of our chief
guest – MPP for Scarborough Rouge, Hon. Bas Balkasoon.
After a very appropriate introduction by President Al, who
praised our guest for doing our community proud, he thanked him
for his help and guidance when the association was being first
formed. Al enlightened members on Mr. Balkasoon’s
major contribution as a municipal councilor for nearly 20
years and now as a very effective MPP.
In his eloquent speech, Mr.Balkasoon brought greetings
from the Govt. of Ontario, on behalf of the Premier Dalton
McGuinty. His words of wisdom were very stimulating and he
emphasized the Govt’s strong commitment to the seniors. He
encouraged members to get involved and support the political
process in the province. He was very happy to meet and mingle
with many of his constituents in the gathering.
In his welcome address, President Al Andrade, reiterated
his theme for the next two years - ‘Working
together as a family’.
“We must do all we can to develop our Association’s family
spirit and enthusiasm and a desire to share our many blessings.
We must then bring these ingredients into a position of
organized action, which we do so well”, he said. He commended
the founding members for their tireless efforts and remarkable
contribution in laying the foundation of TEGSA. He acknowledged
them individually, as many of them were present at the
function. The president also extended a special welcome to the
Presidents of our sister senior associations. He
expressed the possibility of working together in some projects.
Present were. Zulema D’Souza, Pat D’Cruz, Tony
Fernandes and Edmund Menezes. “One of the main keys to the
future of our Association is our ability to attract and develop
dedicated members to our executive.” said Al. “I feel
privileged to be working with a dedicated group of professional
men and women who readily give of their time and talents for
the Association”. He then introduced, for the first time,
members of his Executive and their spouses.
The ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake by Al and
Jean followed, to the tune of “Congratulations”, struck by
the band. More then 20 raffle, door and dance prizes were given
away, thanks to the generosity of the Executive and some
members. The two M.C.’s, Vicky D’Souza and Charles Fernandes,
did a remarkable job in keeping the spirit lively. The social
committee headed by Vicky D’Souza and assisted by Charles
Fernandes, Joan Menezes and Dorothy Fernandes have to be
complimented for a job very well done. |

As time ticks off, minute by minute, so do the minutes of our
lives. When death takes us, what are we? Are we the houses we
so lovingly painted and lived in? Are we the clothes we wore,
the sculptures we molded, the books we wrote, the partners we
loved, the food we ate, the religions we worshipped? Are we
any of these? Or are we nothing if we have not discovered our
true selves? Goan Crazy is a Goan female’s quest to find the

Survey Reveals
Ill-Advised Job Interview Tactics
TORONTO, June 6 /CNW/ - While most
job seekers strive to make a positive impression when
meeting with hiring managers, a recent survey suggests
others seem to go out of their way to remove themselves from
consideration. Executives were asked to describe the most
inappropriate comments candidates have made during
employment interviews.
The responses ranged from the applicant who declared she
didn't want to work hard to the person who argued the job
requirements were wrong -- and then fell asleep. The survey
includes responses from 150 senior executives - including
those from human resources, finance and marketing
departments with Fortune 1000 companies. It was conducted by
an independent research firm and developed by Accountemps,
the world's first and largest specialized staffing service
for temporary accounting, finance and bookkeeping
professionals.

Pillar To Post Recommends Summer Home Maintenance to
Repair Winter Wear and Tear.
A
Well-Maintained Home Can Save Thousands of Dollars
TORONTO, June 6 /CNW/
--WHAT: Tips for homeowners on checking for and repairing
winter damage. Even mild winters can cause damage to a
home, costing homeowners
thousands of dollars in repairs. Summer is the ideal time
to take care of the exterior of a home neglected during
the winter months, in addition to performing annual
check-ups inside the home. Without proper maintenance,
wear and tear will worsen over time.
Here are potential problems and suggested maintenance:
-- Clogged gutters hold water which could back up and
cause damage to the roof or walls. Clean leaves, sticks,
and other debris from gutters and downspouts. Carefully
remove debris and dirt using a garden shovel or large
spoon. Use a garden hose to clean the downspouts. Place
the garden hose at the opening and let water run through
the downspout.

Hygienists urge
Canadians to brush, floss, rinse for healthy mouths,
healthy bodies this Gingivitis Week Research-based
Call-to-Action issued for the third Gingivitis Week, June
5-11
TORONTO, June 5 /CNW/
- Today, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA)
is marking the start of the third annual Listerine
Gingivitis Week with the release of their first
Call-to-Action for all Canadians to improve their oral
health for optimum overall health. "More than fifty per
cent of Canadians currently have gingivitis-inflammation
of the gums caused by a plaque build-up in the mouth,"
says CDHA Executive Director Susan Ziebarth. "Gum disease,
or periodontitis, develops from pre-existing gingivitis,
and recent research suggests periodontitis may be
potentially linked to other systemic diseases such as
diabetes, heart disease, and pre-term, low birth weight
babies.
Gingivitis is both preventable and reversible and is
therefore an important health topic to address now." Based
on a special series of four comprehensive position papers
being published by the CDHA in the Canadian Journal of
Dental Hygiene, the Call-to-Action not only encourages
Canadians to improve their oral health, but it provides
them with both the motivation (potential oral-systemic
health links) and the specific means for doing so -
regular oral health
checkups, brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an
essential oil antiseptic mouthrinse .

out of reach of young children
OTTAWA, June 5 /CNW Telbec/
- Health Canada is alerting
parents and caregivers of the hazards small, loose magnets
pose to young children. A wide range of children's
products such as magnetic building toys, alphabet and
number magnets, science or craft kits, board games,
vehicle sets, even plush toys, may contain small magnets.
In addition, small magnets attached to other items, such
as magnetic jewellery and fridge magnets, pose a potential
problem if they become disengaged from the item. This
advisory is prompted by the recent death of a 20-month old
child in the United States as well as three other US
reports of multiple magnet ingestion incidents and one
multiple magnet inhalation incident. These serious
incidents required surgical intervention and involved
children aged three to eight years.
Health Canada is not aware of any deaths of children in
Canada related to magnet ingestion or inhalation. Over an
eleven year period, however, from 1993 to 2003, incident
details have been recorded for 93 cases of magnet
ingestion and 3 cases of magnet inhalation involving
children under 14 years. While the majority of cases, 57%,
involved children under three years of age, who tend to
put things in their mouths, the hazard may also be
relevant for older children who still mouth objects.
