and other sources
TORONTO (CP) June 23, 2006
- Families of the victims of the Air India bombing
will soon have a place to go to remember their loved ones.
A groundbreaking ceremony for a memorial was held today in
Toronto at Commissioners Park, overlooking Lake Ontario.
The Government of Canada and the India Canada Association
hosted the memorial service in honor of the victims who
perished on Air India flight 182 on June 23, 1985.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Deepak Obhrai,
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs
(Asia-Pacific and Africa); Her Excellency Mrs. Shyamala B.
Cowsik, High Commissioner of India; His Worship Bob
Chiarelli, Mayor of Ottawa; and members of the India Canada
Association.
Jayashree Thampi, who lost her husband and daughter, says
she's grateful for the support all levels of government
have given for the memorial.
The groundbreaking ceremony comes exactly 21 years to the
day of the Air India bombing.
There were 329 people, including 280 Canadians, killed when
flight 182 was downed by a terrorist bomb on June 23, 1985,
near the Irish coast. |

Judge to sort out
'cowardly' Air India bombing
Excerpt
from:
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2006/06/20/pf-1643814.html
June 21, 2006
By JIM BROWN
OTTAWA (CP)
- Declaring the Air India
bombing the most cowardly and inhuman act in Canadian
history, former Supreme Court judge John Major is promising
to do his best to bring belated solace to the families of
the victims.
In an opening statement Wednesday at the public inquiry
into the affair, Major said the probe is the "only route
left" to find out exactly what happened, why it wasn't
prevented and how to head off similar attacks in future.
He candidly admitted the justice system has so far failed
those who lost loved ones when Air India Flight 182 was
downed by a terrorist bomb off the coast of Ireland on June
23, 1985.

Canadian Employers Struggle to Attract and Retain Employees
Hewitt
Associates Survey Reveals Flexibility Key to Addressing
Labour Shortage
TORONTO,
June 15 /CNW/ -
Canadian organizations of all sizes, in all parts of the
country, and in all industries are finding it challenging
to attract and retain employees, according to an extensive
survey conducted by Hewitt Associates, a global human
resources services company. As a result, a majority of the
232 survey respondents are implementing new programs
focused on flexibility to address the problem.
Hewitt's survey reveals that three-quarters of
organizations are having problems attracting or retaining
new employees. Forty-four per cent are struggling with both
attraction and retention. The problem is most acute in
Alberta, where finding or keeping workers is an issue for
97 per cent of respondents, and almost two-thirds indicated
that both are challenges. The problem is only expected to
worsen, with half of the employees currently working at
respondent organizations being baby boomers or older (age
40 or older). Employers indicated they anticipate close to
43 per cent of their employees will take early retirement
and less than 11 per cent will work age 65.

PUZZLE WRAPPED IN
AN ENIGMA: UNDERSTANDING KONKANI IN GOA

Excerpt
Those who care for Konknni should be open to the ground
reality and not be led by mere theoretical idealism or
language and script chauvinism. In a democracy, mutual
respect, understanding and unity in multiplicity these
and other values must guide any action.
Pre-liberation Goa: During Goa's pre-liberation period,
members of the majority community and common folks of
the minority community, for their oral communication,
used Konknni. The majority community used Marathi for
primary education, for popular religion, accounts,
written communication, theatre and other spheres of
their lives.
The elite of the minority community used Portuguese at
home and for education. They used Konknni to converse
with the majority community and common folks of the
minority community who did not know Portuguese language.
Portuguese was considered the language of the cultured.
The elite of the minority community looked down on
Konknni as a language of the servants and the
socio-economically backward commonfolk.
Konknni in the Roman script was used for popular
religious practices and by the mass media. Konknni
written in the Devanagari script hardly existed during
this period. It had practically no influence over the
members of the majority community too......
The Church contributed to standardize Konknni in the
Roman script, which had its roots in sixteenth century.
Let us call this dialect as Roman Script Standard
Konknni (RSSK). After the liberation of Goa, Konknni
language suffered a number of setbacks. This happened
due to partly lack of vision and
leadership on the part of the minority community, and
partly due to the manipulative tactics used by
self-proclaimed protectors of Konknni.

Is Common Courtesy a Thing of the Past?
The Great
Reader's Digest Global Courtesy Test Toronto ranks third
out of 36 cities around the globe
Excerpts
MONTREAL, June 20 /CNW Telbec/
- It's a question most of us
have probably asked at one time or another - "whatever
happened to common courtesy." We live in such a fast-paced
world it may seem that few people have time for "niceties"
such as holding open a door for someone. Is it just an
illusion, or is common courtesy really a thing of the
past? To answer the question How Polite Are We? Reader's
Digest devised the Global Courtesy Test.
That's right - global! From Toronto, New York and London,
to Johannesburg, Mumbai and Moscow - we've been around the
globe and back again, thanks to our 50 international
editions. While not a strict scientific survey, The Great
Reader's Digest Global Courtesy Test is the world's
biggest real-life test of common courtesy, with more than
2,000 tests of actual behaviour, and it provides a
fascinating snapshot of behaviour in the countries tested.
We sent out undercover reporters - half of them men, half
women - from Reader's Digest editions in 35 countries to
assess the citizens of their most populous cities (in
Canada we conducted the test in both Toronto and
Montreal). In each location we carried out the following
three tests:
- We walked into public buildings 20 times behind people
to see if they would hold the door open for us.
- We bought small items from 20 stores and recorded
whether the sales assistants said thank you.
- We dropped a folder full of papers in 20 busy locations
to see if anyone would help pick them up.
And the resultsare quite eye-opening! Our Global Courtesy
Test found that New York, Zurich and Toronto rated as the
Top Three cities worldwide (Montreal came in 21st - just
below the global median). Sao Paulo, Zagreb and Berlin
tied for fourth place. Our test showed that, beneath that
gruff exterior, New Yorkers really are a polite bunch
(particularly when it came to holding doors open).
It seems for many Torontonians, courtesy is just second
nature. In the trendy Queen Street West area, Mike
Parsons, a 28-year-old artist, helped researchers with a
dropped folder. "I sit out here doing drawings all day,
and I find people to be really good and cheerful. Toronto
is very tolerant, very polite," he said.
Lawyer Mark Ellis, 48, agreed. "I've seen more politeness
in Canada than in many other places I've been,
particularly Europe," he said to a male reporter after
holding the door open in the financial district.
The region that most lacked courtesy was Asia, where eight
out of nine cities finished in the bottom 11. In Europe,
Moscow and Bucharest ranked as the least polite cities.
When a woman failed to hold a door in Moscow, she replied,
"I'm not a doorman. It's not my job to hold doors. If
someone gets hurt, they should be quicker on their feet."
While older generations may complain that today's youth
aren't known for their courteous behaviour, it turns out
that, by a small margin, the under-40s were the most
helpful of all age groups. Toronto takes the No.2 position
in the global ranking for courtesy among the young;
Montreal came in tenth overall. When it came to the battle
of the sexes, women were slightly more courteous than men,
and interestingly both groups were significantly more
polite towards their own sex.
Toronto and Montreal were the two Canadian targets for the
Global Courtesy Test, but the rest of the country's not
off the hook just yet. The results of our global test made
us curious about how other Canadian cities would fare. We
may be coming to your hometown soon, so be nice... and
don't forget to hold the door open for people (they may
not be Reader's Digest researchers, but they'll definitely
appreciate your thoughtfulness)! |

ASSAGAO, June 18:
While Goan Christians all over the world celebrate the feast
of their favourite saint - Sant Anton - particularly in Siolim,
Fr John D'Silva has written and published a Konkani book in
the Roman script "Sant Anton Milagrincho Bhokt". The 156-page
book is a compendium of everything that a Konkani reader wants
to know about Sant Anton, including the famous 13 miracles,
very popular folksongs like "Sant Anton man'chea bettan, pavs
ghal soglea xetan...", parishes, chapels and schools dedicated
to the saint all over Goa and even various legends and strange
practices his devotees resort to in times of need - like tying
up the statue, soaking it in water, etc. With a number of
beautiful photographs in colour and black white, besides the
endearing narrative of Fr John, a popular preacher from
Muddavaddi in Saligao, a former Capuchin and now serving at

Canadian Diabetes
Association releases consumer's meal planning and
lifestyle guide
TORONTO,
June 20 /CNW/ - The
Canadian Diabetes Association today launched a new
publication, Beyond the Basics Resource, designed to help
people with diabetes - or those at risk for the disease -
choose the right foods and portion sizes to maintain a
healthy body weight and manage blood glucose levels. This
important tool provides an additional resource for people
with diabetes to learn from and discuss with their
diabetes health-care team.
Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating,
Diabetes Prevention and Management is a new
consumer-friendly meal planning guide that organizes foods
into two main categories - food groups that contain
carbohydrates and therefore raise blood glucose levels
(Grains and Starches, Fruits, Milk and Alternatives and
offer choices for snacks or sweet foods) and food groups
that contain little or no carbohydrate (Vegetables, Meat
and Meat Alternatives, Fats and 'Extras' such as
sugar-free foods and beverages, herbs, spices and
condiments). This will assist those with diabetes to
manage their blood glucose.

MONDAY,
June 19 (HealthDay News) --
The number of new cases of type 2 diabetes among
middle-aged Americans has doubled over the past 30 years,
researchers report.
"There has been tremendous concern, but probably not
enough concern, about the emerging epidemic of diabetes,"
said Dr. Robert Rizza, a professor of medicine at the Mayo
Clinic and president of the American Diabetes Association.
"It doesn't take long to be doubling before the numbers
are simply too great to be even conceived of."
