Kiran Desai wins Booker Prize The Inheritance of Loss

LONDON: Indian-origin writer Kiran Desai has scooped the 50,000 pound Man Booker Prize with her second novel, The Inheritance of Loss , a story rich with sadness about globalisation and with joy at the small surviving intimacies of Indian village life.

The 35-year-old author, daughter of well-known Indian novelist Anita Desai -- to whom The Inheritance of Loss is dedicated -- is the youngest woman to win the award, eclipsing the works of five other short-listed authors.

“I didn't expect to win. I don't have a speech. My mother told me I must wear a sari... A family heirloom, but it's completely transparent,” Desai, said, while accepting the award at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London, Tuesday night.

After thanking her publisher, editor and agent, the student of creative writing at Columbia University in America added: I'm Indian and so I’m going to thank my parents.

“To my mother I owe a debt so profound and so great, that this book feels as much hers as it is does mine. It was written in her company and in her wisdom and kindness in cold winters in her house... One minute isn't enough to convey it,” she said, after accepting the prize.

Excerpts from review
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/books/review/12mishra.html
“The Inheritance of Loss" opens with a teenage Indian girl, an orphan called Sai, living with her Cambridge-educated Anglophile grandfather, a retired judge, in the town of Kalimpong on the Indian side of the Himalayas. Sai is romantically involved with her math tutor, Gyan, the descendant of a Nepali Gurkha mercenary, but he eventually recoils from her obvious privilege and falls in with a group of ethnic Nepalese insurgents. In a parallel narrative, we are shown the life of Biju, the son of Sai's grandfather's cook, who belongs to the "shadow class" of illegal immigrants in New York and spends much of his time dodging the authorities, moving from one ill-paid job to another.

What binds these seemingly disparate characters is a shared historical legacy and a common experience of impotence and humiliation. "Certain moves made long ago had produced all of them," Desai writes, referring to centuries of subjection by the economic and cultural power of the West. But the beginnings of an apparently leveled field in a late-20th-century global economy serve merely to scratch those wounds rather than heal them.

Certified General Accountants Launch First-of-a-Kind Recruitment Website
$2,500 in scholarships available to qualified visitors

TORONTO, Oct. 10 /CNW/ - Certified General Accountants of Ontario launch a first-of-a-kind recruitment website at www.nameyourneed.org. The website was developed with the specific objective of recruiting the right students for the CGA program of professional studies.
www.nameyourneed.org is the first accounting recruitment website to use digital video testimonials from qualified experts (i.e., certified general accountants). Prospective students can log on to find the answers they need when considering a career as a professional accountant.
"Our objective with this website is to take the recruitment experience to a whole new level," says Delmarie Scherloski, director of public affairs, Certified General Accountants of Ontario. "We've used an intuitive menu system and interactive video, so that potential students can quickly find the information that's important to them."
"A major advantage of the CGA program is that students earn a living while working towards their accounting designation," says Ken Sugar, a partner in PTC Accounting & Finance. "That's why I encourage our clients who want to build a career in accounting and finance to register in the CGA program. Now www.nameyourneed.org adds another valuable dimension to the learning experience."
The website identifies four different categories of individuals that may be considering a career as a professional accountant: university students, college students, internationally trained professionals and those currently employed in accounting and finance. There is also an area for employers. Sections contain information and digital video testimonials, designed to answer questions from each category. www.nameyourneed.org will be refreshed, based on the feedback of guests and tracking of the most-viewed sections.

CALANGUTE SOCIAL IN CANADA
By: Kevin D’Costa

The villagers of Calangute joined together on September 23rd, 2006 to celebrate their annual social. However, this year’s celebration was a special one, since it was the 15th anniversary of the Calangute Association in Canada. The social was held at Claireport Place Banquet Hall, Etobicoke, Ontario and was attended by well over 500 villagers and guests.

Lively music was provided by The Goa Amigos band and DJ Fatz. They got the crowd on their feet and on the dance floor all night long. A sumptuous dinner buffet was prepared by authentic Goan/Portuguese/Italian/Canadian/Ceylon chefs and everyone enjoyed the delicious food.

The floor shows included an Egyptian Belly Dance, special show by Bailamos International Dance Studio, Dekni Dance, Goan Medley Dance, and special songs by Tricia Gilhooly (a Calangutevillager).

The President of the Calangute Association, Canada, Antonio Mascarenhas, raised the toast and Al Mathias, President of Siolim Village thanked the President and the villagers of Calangute.

Congratulations to the President, Antonio Mascarenhas and his Committee for doing an outstanding job. Everything ran smoothly and we all had a wonderful time.

Next year’s Calangute Social will be held on September 15, 2007 at St. John’s Hall, Mississauga, Canada. For more information regarding next year’s social please visit the Calangute Association website at http://www3.telus.net/calangute/

CLR - 7th. Annual Social.
1st Oct 2006.

(Click on thumbnails for larger view)

Born in the year 2000, the CLR is a relatively new association compared to the various other Goan Village associations. With the vision of a few dedicated villagers from Curtorim, Loutulim and Raia, and the ensuing hardwork involved, the CLR became a reality.

As evidenced from the socials, interest in CLR from our villagers living in Toronto and surrounding areas of Montreal, Chicago, New Jersey and Washington is steadily growing. The annual Social held at the end of September/beginning of October of every year, has become a popular and well attended event.

This year’s Social, which was held on October 1, 2006 at the Claireport Place Banquet and Convention Centre was a huge success. The President, Francis Carvalho & his wife Lynette took on the challenge of hosting the Show, with the help of Committee members, Noemia & Manuel Araujo, Ella Gomes, Genie Gomes, Ethel Moniz, Violet & Antonio Monteiro, Teresa & Olavo Valadares.

The highlights of the function were:
The youth choir under the guidance of Tracy Tellis, Merlyn Araujo and musicians Felix Remedios, Ivan Araujo & Derwin Remedios rendered a superb performance.

The Mando singing and dancing was well appreciated and received a huge applause. This group, under the able leadership of Emano Moniz and musicians Felix Remedios & Anthony Coutinho, have also performed at the Konkani Samelan held in Hamilton in the Summer.

Congratulations is in order to Effie Coelho for her efforts and expertise she imparted on the Deknni dancers.

The popular band Naked Flame provided the music which was enjoyed by all.

Every committee organizing the annual CLR social in previous years has endeavoured to encourage participation by the village youth and to reinforce the Goan culture in the form of performance of Mando and Dulpods, Deknni dance and mini-plays in Konkani.

The high level of presence and participation of the youth at this year’s CLR social in the crowd of over 450 people spoke well of the Association’s drive to promote the Goan culture to our future generations. This year the youth participated in the emceeing, the mass choir and the cultural dance. After all, they will be handing over the torch to these youth to continue our Goan traditions….

The CLR are certainly on the right path. It was a welcome sight to see the youth take over the running of floor activities! Viva C L R....

Goan Catholic has record collection of Cross

PANAJI (ICNS) -- A pious Catholic in Goa, who has the largest collection of unique crosses from across the world, is all set to enter soon in the Limca Book of Records.
http://www.theindiancatholic.com/newsread.asp?nid=3575

Maendra Alvares has been collecting a wide variety of crosses all these years, and that has made him star collector of the Cross.

Alvares has now applied to the Limca Book of Records saying he has the largest collection of Cross. "It is my deep faith in Jesus Christ and my great respect and religious fervour towards the Cross that has made me collect the Cross all the time," Alvares told Indian Catholic.

Alreadly, Alvares has found a place in the Limca Book of Records for sculpting the biggest stone statue of Meerabai in 1995.

The Limca Book Records mainly features the achievements of Indians. First published in 1997, book has published it's 16th edition in 2006. The book is published with the patronage of Coca-Cola India.

On Saturday, Alvares launched an exhibition of his cross in Goa, which was inaugurated by Goa Governor S. C. Jamir in presence of Goa's Power Minister Digamber Kamat.

Jamir praised Alvares for his great faith in the Cross. "It shows that his faith is not just in words, but in action. This is a unique and great collection," the Governor said.

Alvares has already collected around 500 crosses from across the globe. According to him the crosses are unique in themselves. "Each cross narrates a history," Alvares said.

"The collection began in Europe and have subsequently added to it from different parts of world... There is a Latin cross with three buds called budded cross, Coptic Church cross, five jewelled cross...," Alvares explained.

What made Alvares' collection striking was his introduction of St. Peter's Cross, which is upside down. "St Peter was crucified upside down and hence the cross symbolises his crucification," Alvares explained.

Total 500 crosses are classified in 70 categories, Alvares said adding, "crosses are different, they symbolise different people but the basic concept of faith and religion seems the same."

He said he will be writing to the Limca Book of Records about his crosses' collection. "I am sure no one has such a huge collection," Alvares stated.

Alvares has asked his friends and Catholics from across Goa to contribute their unique crosses to his collection. "So that I can be the proud collector of the largest number of crosses in the world," he added.
