Vancouver residents
make New Year's resolution to climb Mount
Kilimanjaro to help create a future without breast
cancer
VANCOUVER, Jan. 2 /CNW/ -
In February 2007, Vancouver's Gary Mayzes,
Regional Director, British Columbia, CIBC Wood Gundy,
will lead a team of 21 others who are scheduled to
scale Mount Kilimanjaro in support of the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation. The Climb team includes 12
members from British Columbia, including four other
CIBC Wood Gundy employees from the Vancouver area,
David Babbitt, Pravin Kumar, Peter Leacock and Steve
McCusker, as well as Darrell Mayzes, who is the team
leader's brother from Nanaimo.
As the new year begins, each participant has resolved
to raise a minimum of $10,000 for the Canadian Breast
Cancer Foundation. The goal for the 2007 CIBC Wood
Gundy Climb for the Cure is to raise $275,000 to help
create a future without breast cancer.
"According to recent estimates, one in nine Canadian
women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her
lifetime," said Gary Mayzes, Regional Director,
British Columbia, CIBC Wood Gundy. "The challenge of
climbing a mountain probably pales in comparison to
what breast cancer patients go through, but I want to
do my part to raise funds for this important cause -
and I am hoping my community will support me."
The first CIBC Wood Gundy Climb for the Cure was held
in 2004, and led by CIBC Wood Gundy investment Advisor
Michael Ramsden. After watching his wife endure the
challenges of breast cancer, Michael decided to honour
her courage by conducting a challenge of his own -
climbing the 19,340-foot summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro -
to raise awareness about breast cancer as well as
funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Each climber, including Gary Mayzes, is seeking
donations in advance of the climb to support the
Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In 2007, CIBC Wood
Gundy is proud to be funding the Climb for Judy Dyer,
a breast cancer survivor from Kelowna, British
Columbia. The other members of the expedition are
paying their own way to Tanzania and 100 per cent of
the donations will go directly to the Foundation.
Donations in support of the climbers can be made
online at
www.cibcwoodgundyclimbforthecure.com.
The climbers will depart from Canada to Moshi,
Tanzania on February 14th to begin the seven-day trek
to the 19,340-foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. |
