Busy Day In Indian Capital
Includes 10 Agreements Signed By Business Mission
Delegates
NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 /CNW/ -
Ontario is determined to play a major role in India's
dynamic economic growth, Premier Dalton McGuinty told key
government officials and business leaders here today.
"We are here from Ontario - a large delegation of our
finest business people and researchers, educators and
builders - because we are indebted to India's rich
history. We are impressed by the exciting India of today
and we are intent on playing a bigger role in India's
future," Premier McGuinty said in his first major speech
here.
"We are focused on areas where we see infinite potential:
culture and education, financial services and
infrastructure, and research and innovation," Premier
McGuinty said.
"But our ultimate goal is to build a stronger India, and a
stronger Ontario, by developing the opportunities that
will, in turn, strengthen our people."

What is the Growing
Gap?
By 12:13 pm on New
Year’s Day, while many Canadians were still nursing a
hangover, Canada’s 100 highest paid CEOs had already
pocketed what will take minimum wage workers the rest of
2007 to earn.
http://www.growinggap.ca/
• Canadians can go from rags to riches if they work hard
enough—right? The reality is that most Canadians will stay
in their original earning category all their lives.
• Why is the gap getting worse? Every year more
well-paying jobs are being replaced by work that is less
secure, and/or work that pays less and fails to offer
benefit packages. And the social safety net no longer
catches most working Canadians when they fall on hard
times.

Post-Boomers Embrace
Spirituality
Young Canadians seek a structured
faith, says sociology professor
http://www.wcr.ab.ca/news/2007/0115/bibby011507.shtml
By BILL GLENWCR Staff Writer
Lethbridge
The next two decades may have a profound impact on the
Catholic Church in Canada with the Baby Boomer generation
aging into retirement and beyond.
While secularists would have you believe that the future
is fraught with peril, noted Lethbridge sociology
professor Reginald Bibby says the interest in organized
religion has been dramatically underestimated.
Bibby says 20 years from now, the Church could actually be
bulging with worshippers and energized as never before.

Save Goan Traditions
http://oheraldo.in/node/21685
Ursula R. D’Souza and others, Taleigao
Your editorial under the caption “Save Tradition” was timely
and was appreciated by many. Since the time you joined O
Heraldo, we found lot of improvement in the reporting and
people who are doing wrong including our ministers are on the
run.
It is time we fight for our land lest it is late. About Panaji
traditional festival committee headed by Joaquim Teles,
Timoteo Fernandes, Napolean D’Souza and others, is doing
yeomen service to revive feasts, traditions and culture which
is fast fading off. You require daring and power to collect
funds to organize so many free shows throughout the year.
Their latest initiative to revive the Panaji feast paid
dividend, because their free programmes on the 8th December in
the Municipal Garden and then Konkani drama at the Kala
Academy on the 10th December drew a record crowd of about 2500
people. Even their carnival parade this year was traditional
and was best after many years.
This committee got boost from you and they should be
encouraged by the people of Goa, to continue to organize and
revive our traditions. It may be mentioned, that there will be
many people in our ranks to criticize any good things done,
what themselves cannot do. There are people who will organize
programes to fill their pockets by charging exorbitant tickets
for their shows. But here there are bunch of people who are
giving big shows free of cost to the people of Goa. This has
to be appreciated by one and all. Through this column, we
request the Panaji Traditional Festival Committee to keep the
flag flying, we are there with you especially the tiatr
lovers. |

The business community of southwestern coastal state of Goa is
looking forward to forging new bonds with its erstwhile
colonial master Portugal, whose President Anibal Cavaco silva
begins a week-long visit to the state beginning today.
Even as a debate rages in political circles with regards to
the state university's decision to honor Silva with a honorary
doctorate, the business community hopes to make the best out
of the visit, looking to even make Portugal a stepping stone
toward European Union markets, PTI reported.

Goan Diaspora Makes A
Mark Worldwide
http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=broadcast&broadcastid=38133
Panaji, Jan 14 (IANS) From
coaching top football clubs in Moscow to fighting racial
discrimination, from becoming Telugu film stars to heading
$100 million tech firms, the Goan diaspora is notching up a
range of achievements worldwide.
This point gets underlined in a listing put out here recently,
even as the Goa government undertook its annual initiative to
woo expats from the region.
Compiled based on information through up by cybernetworks such
as Britain-based website goanvoice.org.uk and Goanet.org, the
list of 101 'cybergoans' aims to "acknowledge the
contributions by people of Goan origin, regardless of where
they are located, and in what field they work".
Most are individuals or organisations that have been
attracting attention in cyberspace in the past year.
Some surprise inclusions in the list are Miss Great Britain (Preeti
Desai, 25), zedo.com CEO Roy De Souza, Symantec senior vice
president Francis deSouza, Cognizant COO Francisco D'Souza,
Dell Inc manager Andrew Fernandes, Kent bus-driver Ken D'Souza,
meditation teacher Lygia Monteiro, campaigners against racism
and more. |

Guru:
Ratnam Excels Again
http://www.zeenews.com/znnew/print_articles.asp?aid=347810&sid=ZNS
By: Ankush Khanna
At the time when Bollywood films are failing to match the
extensive pre-release promotional campaigns and controversies
created just to develop viewers' interest, Mani Ratnam's Guru
comes as a welcome change and a much-needed relief.
Unlike the silly Bollywood love stories or action movies where
the near perfect heroes beat up the bad guys, Guru is a story
based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani, who started his career
in Turkey as a petrol pump attendant and rose to become one of
the top business tycoons in India.
In the lead character Abhishek Bachchan has done a wonderful
job by trying his level best to match his speech, gait and
even the laughter with that of the character he was portraying
in the film. His performance cannot be considered perfect but
he has given a powerful performance, which will be remembered
for sometime. While the junior B has already proved his acting
skills in films like Yuva and Sarkar, this movie will
definitely add another feather to his cap.
In other important characters, Aishwarya Rai, Mithun
Chakraborty and Madhavan have done commendable job. However,
the one character, which was not required and that failed to
make any impression was that of a physically challenged girl
played by Vidya Balan. While all other actors of the film,
especially Mithun and Madhavan, will gain much from this film,
Vidya Balan's character will only be talked about as
completely unnecessary. But the movie does not get affected at
all by her absence or presence.
It is needless to say that the music is awesome and is a big
hit. Gulzar's lyrics and A R Rahman's composition have always
spun magic and Guru is no exception. 'Barso Re' picturised
beautifully on Aishwarya Rai is a catchy number and on the big
screen looks all the more entertaining. You may love or hate
Mallika Sherawat, but her item number 'Maiya Maiya' is a
delight for anyone to watch. I'm sure that after this film,
Bollywood would get another item number in Mallika, thanks to
Guru. |

Canada, the TMC has gained international recognition
for the quality and importance of its collection, and
the excellence of its exhibitions and programming.

January 23 - July 8, 2007
Guest Curator: Dale Gluckman, Los Angeles
Colour & Light presents a dazzling array of
embroidered textiles drawn primarily from the Textile
Museum of Canada's rich South Asian holdings. A video
installation of contemporary voices brings personal
commentaries to textiles traditionally made for

Minister of
Health Tony Clement Encourages Canadians to Get
WinterActive
OTTAWA, Jan. 15 /CNW Telbec/
- The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of
Health, welcomed today the launch of WinterActive, a
national community mobilization initiative led by the
Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in collaboration
with the Provinces and Territories to help Canadians
improve their health while having fun enjoying the
best of Canada's wintertime.
"With today's launch of WinterActive, Canada's New
Government is encouraging Canadians to be more
physically active and healthy by participating in
events and activities across the country," said
Minister Clement. "Encouraging healthy living is also
why on January 1 we introduced Canada's first tax
credit for parents who enroll their children in sports
activities to keep them physically active."

A Call To
Society To Stand Up For The New Targets Of Intolerance
MONTREAL, Jan. 15 /CNW Telbec/
- In Canada, terminally ill patients and
handicapped senior citizens in nursing homes are being
left to fend for themselves out in the cold winter
months. In the U.K. a 17 year old girl with a learning
disability is beaten and tortured for four hours,
resulting in a burnt body, a broken nose, a perforated
ear-drum and inestimable psychological damage. Across
North America, nurses and other employees are more and
more easily targeted for muggings and other forms of
violence while they are forced to take their work
breaks outside. The important story lies not in the
tragic sufferings of these individuals, but rather in
the calculated media campaign that has led these
victims to be categorized as acceptable targets for
the cruelty of their peers and the self-righteous
sadism of their caretakers and protectors, for the
simple crime of having one trait in common.

New Blood Test
Could Predict Heart Failure
More Details
A new blood test could help predict the risk of heart
failure or a stroke, allowing doctors to take action
to help prolong a patient's life.
Researchers say the test will be beneficial to all
patients with coronary heart disease, which kills more
than 110,000 people in England every year.
It could reveal whether a patient with angina,
swelling or a weak heart is at a greater risk of a
heart attack or failure than previously thought.
Coronary heart disease is the biggest cause of death
in England - and 275,000 annually suffer a heart
attack.
The development of the blood test came after a study
of 987 men and women found that those with higher
levels of a certain protein were more likely to suffer
