The Late Sr. Irene Pinto's Story
From: http://www.sistersofmercy.ie/stories/story_display.cfm?story_id=14

Dedicated to my Divine Spouse, my loving parents, my family, fiends, my mercy family and all those who journeyed with me and encouraged me on my life's journey.

My name is Irene Celestine. I was born in Goa, India in 1933 and baptized in Tivim. My early education was in Goa, then in Nairobi, Kenya. I graduated from Highridge Women's Teachers Training College and taught for nine years before I joined the Sisters of Mercy, Ireland.

From my earliest years I had felt the desire to be a religious sister. My mother's parting words at the airport have always been an inspiration to me:" You are leaving me but I am handing you over to our heavenly Mother Mary"

In 1961, I was interviewed in the first Kenyan mercy Convent, Makadara, opened in 1956, and joined the novitiate in Carysfort, Dublin. My postulancy lasted six months and then I was received and given the name Mary Euphrasia. After formation, I made temporary profession.

I taught for two years in a Dublin school and took my Diploma in Education there. In 1966 I celebrated Final Profession with great joy and returned to Nairobi the following year. For twenty-five years I taught at Huruma High School, then at Mbooni T.T.C. and school for three years, at Mercy Commercial School for a year and a half and at St, Joseph's girl's High School for three years. Later I did formation work for two years.

I celebrated my silver jubilee in our Lady Queen of Peace Church in 1988.

God has enabled me to realise my two dreams. Firstly, Bishop Kioko blessed St. Emmanuel's Chapel, Kibwesi, Kenya in 1995 and later, Bishop David blessed the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, which I had initiated. It is now a place of prayer for the Christians of Our Lady of Visitation Parish, Nairobi.

Lastly, I pray God's blessing on all who have supported me in my journey
