Conference: Shades of Brown
May 30, 2007
-Participants explore ‘Shades of
Brown: Challenges, Myths and Promises’ at a
ground-breaking, first ever, international education
conference on South Asian issues
Parents, students and community members are invited to
attend Shades of Brown, an education conference on South
Asian issues on July 8, 2007 at York University. The first
international conference of its kind in North America will
help participants develop a sound understanding of the
challenges, myths and promises related to the South Asian
community in Canada. The Art Gallery, book displays,
resources, workshops, networks, socials will all provide
numerous opportunities for all participants to develop an
environment that is more reflective of the diversity of
Canada.
South Asian parents and students
aged fourteen and over will explore workshops including:
• Successful literacy exercises (S.A. articles, events and
leaders) – preparing for the EQAO tests
• Preparing to access scholarships
• Health issues – depression/alcoholism/diet and exercise
• Preparing for further education in Canada
• The political process
• Community involvement
• Anger management/Relaxation
• Overcoming language barriers
"It is the hoped that school boards and universities who
have not become demonstrated leaders through action, will in
fact find something at this conference that will lead them
to integrate curriculum, implement resources, apply policies
and commit to real mentorship that embraces change," says
Ranjit Khatkur, conference chair.
A separate conference for educators, administrators,
researchers and community agencies who serve South Asians
and South Asian youth will be held from July 9 to 12 at the
same venue. It will introduce a deeper understanding of
South Asian experiences and issues through the presentation
of current and critical research, resources, presenters and
workshops. This conference will provide opportunities to
network, develop friendships, enjoy classical artists,
ambience, dinner and many social events.
