'GOAN SCHOOL MOMBASA'
(PRESENTLY SACRED HEART SCHOOL MOMBASA)
MARKS 75TH ANNIVERSARYSCHOOL foundation on August 14th 1932

From Coastweek – http://www.coastweek.com/3026-20.htm

On August 14th 2007, the Sacred Heart School Mombasa (formerly the Goan School Mombasa) will mark its 75th anniversary since its foundation on August 14th 1932. This was one of the first schools to be established in Kenya and founded by the Goan Community Mombasa. It is therefore appropriate that the Goan Community, Mombasa, recognizes this milestone in its legacy of it's founding contribution to education and development in Mombasa.

A spokesman for the Mombasa Goan community observed:

"Memories of the days at Goan School stir lots of nostalgia about the vision, sacrifice, success and friendship in several persons of different faiths and cultures over a number of generations all over the world

"They say 'never forget where you came from', and so to commemorate this occasion the Goan Community Mombasa is organising a reunion of all ex-students teachers and friends of The Goan School - Sacred Heart School.

"Theme for this occasion is 'Our legacy of real value'- which we want to share with everyone and bring out the Goan School's founding ethos in realising the potential in those who attended the institution;

"and also to remind us of our common values and collective bond through education, sport and drama which perhaps was that first step in the ascent to what each one has achieved today “

A sub-committee comprising Ivan Fernandes, Ignatius Pereira, Franklyn Pereira, Theo Souza, Michaela Nicholls, Angelo Pereira, Andrew Abreu, Raymond Braganza, Hervinder Singh (Papu), Major General Samson Mwathethe and Mike Fernandes has been formed to lead and co-ordinate this event.

EXHIBITION - ARTIST GYNELLE ALVES
Date: Tuesday, June 26 To: Tuesday, July 10
Zenzi 183, Waterfield Road
Bandra (w)

Zenzi presents an exhibition by Gynelle Alves from 21st June-10th July 2007

She is unable to pinpoint her 'inspiration' - sometimes it may have been emotion - sometimes it may have been too much wine. Deceptively simple at first, each painting reveals depth - of feeling, of experience. Whether it's the cheeky irreverence of 'Tabloid' or the comfortable aloofness of the backseat driver/ dream for the insomniac - or the raw exhaustion and pain of December.. angel wings worn - a history of faces leering at its fatigue... Gynelle says she didn't plan on the faces - they just arrived.

Excerpts from interview with Express India
For lovers of pop culture, there's a new kid in town. Mumbai girl Gynelle Alves, who studied art in Muscat, is holding a solo of doodles, sketches and illustrations in pen and ink, pencil and watercolour. The 29-year-old isn't new to the art scene, but the exhibition, on till July 6 at Zenzi, Bandra, is her first.

Why watercolours?
I love the immediacy of pen and ink as well as watercolour because it's easy to tell when you've finished. They respond to your mood easily. With watercolour, there isn't much room for correction or painting over. I like its honesty. However, I want to try out other styles and media. I'm open to experimenting with digital art.

Describe your work
My art is beautiful, wistful and odd, with the occasional moronic thrown in for balance. A case in point is Sandwich; it has a woman reclining on the moon which looks like a half-eaten piece of cheese.

Does your work have an affinity with Goan artist Mario Miranda?
I do like drawing bootylicious women and pot-bellied men. But my penmanship is quite different from Miranda's. My approach to colour is definitely more hallucinatory-almost the trip-hip style that one often sees on graffiti walls in the USA.

Tell us about your book Crush
It's a collection of 50 beautiful poems by the very talented Annie Zaidi. It also has an illustrated story by me, The Night I Thought You Loved Me, running parallel to the poems.

Plans for the future
I paint for love and I work as a commercial artist illustrating the whole gamut-from sexuality and health to business and finance, poetry, children's books, fiction and news. I hope to have another show sometime soon.
