Goan Overseas Association Holds Fundraiser Carnival Dance
The entire proceeds of G.O.A Toronto Carnival Dance on
February 2, 2008 will be donated to the family of 9 year
old Tara Ann D’Souza to assist with expenses following her
serious illness.

The following summary of Tara’s condition is taken from
www.goatoronto.com
Tara
was born without the use of her left arm. She has been
undergoing treatment at Sick Kids with minor but
encouraging improvements each year. Over the past few
years, she became an accomplished figure skater, and even
learned to swim and knit. Her accomplishments so impressed
her physician at Sick Kids, that he only recently changed
her visits from annually to once in two years.
In late September 2007, Tara was hit by a particularly
virulent strain of strep. At Sick Kids, they operated on
her immediately to stop the disease, which by then was
rapidly spreading throughout her body and was crippling
her vital organs. Her left leg was amputated, first at the
knee, then at the hip. She was on multiple life support
machines and at a certain point, it seemed almost certain
that she would not survive. Fortunately, Tara is a
strong-willed child and her determination, along with the
prayers of her parents and their families and friends, saw
her through.
Although the gift of Tara’s life far outweighs any
consequences, her parents, Sanjiv and Sharmila, will have
to face the reality of making huge changes in their lives
to help Tara live as normal a life as possible when she
returns home. This includes Sharmila having to give up her
full-time job, and making structural changes around the
house to make it wheelchair-accessible, putting in a
bedroom and washroom for Tara on the main floor, and
making other modifications.
An account has been opened in Tara’s name at CIBC Bank
