Message from New President.
-
Annual General Meeting.
President's address
April 15, 2008
My dear friends,
In my inaugural address at the conclusion of the
Annual General Meeting - April 11, 2008, I reminded
you that I was not elected as President, rather I
volunteered for the role. My reason for doing so was
outlined in my letter to the outgoing President Edmund
Menezes, which was read by him and is included in this
Newsletter.
To me you have been, and will always be, my very dear
and beloved friends not mere "Ladies and Gentlemen" or
"Members of the Club". To me, those terms are too
formal.
It is my unfathomable appreciation of the vision,
dedication and sacrifice of the Founder members and
successive Presidents and Executive Committees that
led me to Volunteer for this position. Like most of
you, I too have family commitments and obligations.
Notwithstanding, I decided to take on this
responsibility so that others may follow and carry on
the "Club Torch" or the "Baton" in the relay to
maintain the slogan of our dynamic past President,
Victor D'Souza - "Our club with a proud past and a
bright future".
With the unwavering support of Vice President Ninette
D'Silva, who I choose to call the Co-President, and
six other members of the outgoing committee, I have no
doubts of our ability to continue to provide you the
weekly activity, fellowship and recreation to which
you are accustomed. Please reciprocate with your
prayers, participation, co-operation and assistance
whenever possible and necessary.
To my dear Committee members, I say a big "Thank You "
for joining me and rising to this occasion despite
your four and more years of dedicated service so far.
In particular, I thank Joe Figueredo and Amy
Fernandez, as Treasurer and Hospitality Coordinator,
for taking on these strenuous responsibilities. Please
give them both your "Big Hand" and a phone call of
appreciation when possible.
To increase the awareness of the members of our Club,
I have researched and gone to the "Roots of the Saint
Francis Xavier Seniors Club (Toronto) East" which I
have used as a centerfold in this issue of the
Newsletter. In doing so, I have used the information
from 20th and 25th Anniversary brochures of our Club,
the 30th Anniversary brochure of the Canorient
Christian Association, and Talks with our ex-longest
serving President Teo Gomes, senior member Lina Nunes,
and the great grandfather, Stan Francis, who has the
honor of having more than one "First" to his name. In
case of any omission or inaccuracies, please enlighten
me.
Finally to idolize the vision of our Founder fathers I
have added yet another slogan as we step on the dais -
"Club Service - A Living Tribute to our Founder
Members".
Thank you and God bless.
Aloysius Carvalho
President
The Annual General Meeting -
April 11, 2008
The Presence of 132 members at the AGM was
indeed a record. Probably the uncertainty of whether
the Club would continue was the anxiety that motivated
members to attend. Attendance by 36 members or 10% of
the membership was all that was necessary to form the
quorum, Naturally, 37% attendance was not only a
surprise but very reassuring of the members' desire to
support the continuance of the Clubs' activities. The
President, Mr. Edmund Menezes, in his usual cordial
way welcomed the members and called the meeting to
order.
Prior to the commencement of the agenda, the President
commended Peter Francis, the Editor of the Club's
Newsletter, on his milestone, dedicated, voluntary
service of 25 years as Editor. In appreciation, Peter
was presented with an engraved plaque award and a
check for $100. He was moved to tears with emotion at
this gesture and barely able to say "Thank You".
Following the presentation, Peter was invited to cut a
cake, which was later distributed to those present.
Edmund also read the letters he had received from
ex-Presidents Teo Gomes and Victor D'Souza. They both
commended him and his Executive Committee on the
excellent performance of their respective portfolios
over the past 4 years.
The meeting progressed speedily with the agenda. The
President read his opening address and thanked each of
his committee members and all the helpers who helped
to make his presidency a pleasant experience. The
minutes of the last AGM, the Secretary's report and
the Financial Accounts were respectively proposed,
seconded and unanimously approved. Some minor items in
accounts were clarified by Aloysius Carvalho who was
involved in the completion of the financial accounts.
After some discussion, the
following decisions were also taken :
-
To
cap the membership of the club at 345 including
Associate but excluding Exempt members.
-
To
retain the present rate of annual subscription and
admission fee.
When it came to the election of the new Executive
Committee, the President read the letter from
Aloysius Carvalho with the attached nomination list
of his Executive Committee. (these are reproduced
hereafter in the Newsletter). There was great
applause and unanimous approval. Mukesh kapadia also
consented to continueas the Honorary Auditor.
On the
"any other business" agenda item, Edmund read the
proposals from Tony D'Souza and Aloysius Carvalho.
They were approved after deliberation and a vote
taken.
-
That
the Newsletter be published 3 times a year (instead
of bi-monthly as at present) to reduce the amount of
labor involved as well as the cost.
-
That
club rule No. 29 "Liability from loss and injury" be
amended to read as reproduced on the inside front
cover of this Newsletter.

India Calling 2008
Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC) in association with
Canada-India Business Council (CIBC) and Indo Canadian
Business Chamber (ICBC) is organizing India Calling
2008 India Canada Business Partnership Summit in
Toronto, Canada from June 14-17 and in Vancouver from
June 18-19, 2008
Why Canada ?
-
Canada and India have much in common with well over
one million people of Indian descent calling Canada
their home
-
Canada has a strong and growing economy; is part of
a free trade area of more than 450 million people;
has an internationally competitive tax and fiscal
regime
-
Canada’s bilateral trade with India is small-less
than 0.5% of Canadian exports are to India and less
than 1% of Canadian imports are from India. Vast
opportunity to increase bilateral trade in existing
commodities and exploring new tradeable items.
-
India’s share is only 0.5% of Canada’s FDI outflows,
India is 30th largest investor in Canada, with a
share of merely 0.03% in total FDI flow in
Canada.Given the size of both the economies and the
level of development, there is wide scope for
increased two-way FDI flows. Financial services,
power and ICT collectively represent 85% of Canadian
investment in India.
-
Canadian and Indian businesses could offer
complementary strengths in respect to joint venture
projects. For example, India could offer management,
IT support, ICT technology and specialized
equipments, while Canadians could offer strong
expertise in engineering, equipment technology and
environmental science.

On CBC TV - Air India 182
Premiering On: Sunday June 22, 2008 at 9pm on CBC-TV
Repeating On: Sunday June 29, 2008 at 10pm ET/PT on
CBC Newsworld
http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/doczone/2008/airindia/index.html
On June 22, 1985, Air India flight 182 left Montreal
en route to Delhi with 329 passengers aboard, most of
them Canadian. Four hours later, an explosion in the
baggage compartment destroyed the plane, killing all
on board. Canada’s longest criminal investigation
revealed the attack was the work of Sikh terrorists
operating in British Columbia. The RCMP interrogate
Inderjit Singh Reyat (Gurpreet Singh Chana) at
headquarters as other officers look on.
The powerful, intelligent and provocative film
recounts the final hours, days and weeks before the
plane disappeared off Irish radar screens. It reveals
the story of how Canada’s first major
counter-terrorism operation failed to thwart the
conspiracy and lays bare the ‘perfect storm’ of errors
that resulted in the world’s most lethal act of
aviation terrorism before Sept. 11.
AIR INDIA 182 is written and directed by Sturla
Gunnarsson, and produced by Gunnarsson and David York.
It was honoured at Hot Docs 2008 as the Festival’s
Canadian Opening Presentation, where it was hailed as
“compelling, poignant...the definitive film about the
Air India tragedy and the most important documentary
of the past few years.” AIR INDIA 182 is produced by
52 Media Inc. and Eurasia Motion Pictures Inc. in
association with CBC Television. |
