Toronto East Goan Seniors Association's..
MASALA CHOW PATTY NITE
evokes visions of a warm summer break
The name itself evokes visions of the hustle and
bustle of those warm, sultry nights in India.
This again was a full house event that will be
remembered for validating Friday 27th, June 2008 as
TEGSAs best and, hopefully, continue to change the
events to follow.
The evening started promptly at 6:30 p.m. and after
Grace, dinner was served – a Kebab Roll, a Chicken
Pattie, a Fish Roll with Chutney and a generous
serving of Bhel with all the trimmings. Dessert was
Mango Ice Cream, a Ladoo, a glass of lemonade, tea and
coffee - A special treat from TEGSA.
Invited guests were :- Mr & Mrs Aloysius Carvalho,
President. St. Francis Xavier Seniors and Mr & Mrs
Tony D’Silva, President. Canorient Seniors. Kevin & Lisette Saldanha made a short presentation on
the International Goan Convention.
Roland Francis, TEGSA member & Sun Life Financial
Advisor was introduced to the crowd.
Soon after, our famous “Richi’s DeeJay Services” took
over.
He came well equipped with a wide range of tunes -
present / yesteryears & in various languages. His
sound system was simply second to none.
The dance floor was packed and the enthusiastic crowd
did not wish or want to leave the floor.
Cha, Cha, Cha & Tango lessons were introduced by
Fatima and MC Joachim. With such good music & teaching
everybody joined in. They seemed to know it all.
TEGSA has now obtained an extra hour extension for all
future events.Dancing continued – all wanted MORE – but time was a
factor. It ran too fast.
2 rounds of Bingo followed with some amazing Cash
Prizes!
Lest we forget a lot of hard work and planning goes
into events such as this. Special thanks to our Social
Secretary, Martha Menezes and her many helpers who
ensured that we all have a good time.
As the Club premises are being renovated in July and
August, our next event “Bollywood Nite” will be held
on September 5, 2008.
Get your tickets early and your Eastern outfits ready.
And finally, thanks to the Executive Committee headed
by Charles Fernandes. Look forward to more exciting
events !

Lewis
Lawrence has spent much of his life raising funds for
charity and, in general, doing his best for the
community. Not surprisingly, the Lion Lewis Lawrence
Tribute Dinner on Saturday June 7, was a charity
fundraiser at the Older Adult Centre at Square One
Shopping Centre. The event included a reception,
followed by dinner, tribute and entertainment.
The retired engineer has been a volunteer for most of
his life — he has been a Lion for 53 years — on two
sides of the globe; first in his native India, then in
Canada after making Mississauga his permanent home.
Lawrence has been a sparkplug for many of the Central
Lions Club’s considerable efforts over the past three
decades. The nearly $5 million they've raised over the
years has helped support a wide range of charities,
community organizations and individuals, including the
annual Mississauga Sports Dinner and Awards Night,
Gymnastics. |

Dubai
June 28, 2008: Dubai International Sea Farers Centre
(DISC) organized "Viva San Jao 2008" (Feast of St.
John the Baptist) at the DISC Charcoal Garden on June
27, 2008 from 3.00 pm onwards. Fun loving people from
all over UAE participated in the "Rain Dance" that
went on till late in the night (10.30 pm). People came
from all over the UAE to witness this scintillating
event, but many had to go back due to the overwhelming
response and security restrictions.
The enthusiastic crowd had great expectations from the
Live Band and the DJ's in attendance. The Band "Radio
Culture" (Arun- Lead Guitar, Aquin - Key Board, Carl-
Rhythms, Kiran-Drums, Michael-Base Guitar) created a
magic spell by singing good selection of Goan, Reggae,
Rock n Roll, Love songs and English foot tapping
numbers. The crowd danced to their tunes on the dance
floor and enjoyed thoroughly under the sprinklers
which created the rain effect. |

Internet

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers will press ahead with plans to introduce new
top-level domains, including some so-called
Internationalized Domain Names written in Chinese and
Arabic scripts, its board decided unanimously
Thursday.
ICANN began discussing extending the number of gTLDs
(generic top-level domains) in 2005. Existing gTLDs
include .com, .org or .biz.
Thursday's decision will not, of itself, create
specific new gTLDs: The board has simply approved a
policy proposal that will form the basis of a set of
rules for creating and managing new gTLDs.
Until now ICANN has kept close control over the
creation of TLDs, but Thursday's vote could allow the
creation of as many new gTLDs as there are domain
names under the .com TLD today -- over 70 million. It
could open the way for big corporations to run their
own domains -- france.ebay instead of ebay.fr, for
instance -- or for linguistic communities to create
transnational domains on the model of the existing
.cat domain for speakers of Catalan. |

Fuel-efficient
plane unveiled in China
Photo: Xinhua

Saving energy: The regional
aircraft Modem Ark (MA)600 in Xi’an, China, on Sunday.
XI’AN: The first
China-made regional aircraft Modem Ark (MA)600 was
completed on Sunday, marking a milestone in the
nation’s drive to be one of the world’s leading
providers of turboprop regional aircraft. The research
and development of the 70-seat MA700 was also under
way, head of the preparation group for the China
Aviation Industry Group Corporation Lin Zuomin
announced at the Xi’an Aircraft Industry(Group)
Company Ltd. The 60-seat MA600, an improved version of
the MA60, was 300 kg lighter, making it 40 per cent
more fuel efficient than turbofan-powered aircraft,
said president of the Xi’an company Meng Xiangkai.
Improvements were also made in the power system, cabin
design and flight capacities. After five years, China
would be able to deliver its own turbo-prop regional
jet series of the MA60, MA600, MA700, said Mr. Lin.
The country would strive for a bigger market share
comparable to its rivals, Canada’s Bombardier and
France’s ATR, he said. The MA600 was scheduled to make
its maiden flight in September, and early promotion
activities had attracted interest from many carriers.
The main marketing drive would begin next year 2009.
The Beijing Youth Daily has reported that 10 to 15
MA600s would be manufactured in the next two years. Up
to 30 a year could be made according to market demand.
Mass production would start in late 2009. Company
officials could give no information on the cost of the
aircraft. The China Aerospace Industry Research Center
forecast 5,300 to 5,500 regional aircraft would be
needed in the next 20 years, of which 1,900 would be
turboprop aircraft. Turbo propeller regional aircraft
are commonly used on short and medium range flights.
Nearly half of the regional jets flying in Europe and
North America are turbo-propelled. The demand for the
relatively environment-friendly aircraft is expected
to rise. The MA60, with a maximum speed of 514 km/h
and a range of 2,450 km or four hours, was first
tested in 1993 and approved in June 2000 for passenger
services. — Xinhua
