Mississauga residents 50 years of age and older (spouses may be under 50) are welcome to join the Centre.

Message from Goan Cultural Group Program Co-ordinators Juliet Rebello & Paul Nazareth.

The Older Adults Centre in Mississauga’s prestigious Square One Shopping Centre is a much-sought venue for the many cultural groups in the area.

The newly Goan Cultural Group (GCG) is an opportunity for the many Goan Seniors in the area to meet on a regular basis and join in social and cultural activities.

There are no additional fees beyond the initial enrollment and activity fee paid upfront. It works out at about $3.00 a month. The Centre is easy to get to by public transport, and parking is virtually unlimited. The GCG is not an offshoot of any Goan Association, Seniors or others. It reports to the Directors of the Older Adults Centre which is managed by an incorporated non-profit, volunteer Board of Directors. (See website link above)

The group’s priorities for the remainder of the year is to promote its activities and enroll members.

Activities include:

  • Learning and practicing the Lancers for performing in an upcoming Goan Seniors competition in November.

  • Card Games including the popular Goan Trook. Learning Whist, Euchre, and Bridge are in the works, as these will help Goan Seniors participate more actively in the mainstream Canadian community.

  • Exploring our own cultural heritage through the Konkani language, books on Goa, dances music, folksongs and movies.

  • Health and Welfare seminars.

  • Recounting the immigrant experience through oral history, discussions, and writing of memoirs & reminiscences Eventually these will be captured through video and sound recordings.

Participation in weekly activities is for enrolled members only. However, the OAC is allowing the Goan Cultural Group to permit guests to visit the place on a one-time basis for to find out more about the Centre and it’s activities.

Tax Alert -The Canada Revenue Agency warns Canadians of mail scam

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning taxpayers to beware of a recent scam where some Canadians are receiving a letter fraudulently identified as coming from the CRA and asking for personal information. The letter is not from the CRA. A PDF version of the letter is available on the CRA Web site at www.cra.gc.ca/alert.

The letter claims that there is “insufficient information” for the individual’s tax return and that in order to receive any “claims,” they will have to update their records. The letter attaches a form specifically requesting the individual’s personal information in writing, via fax or email, including information on bank accounts and passports. This letter is not from the CRA and Canadians should not provide their personal information to the sender. All taxpayers should be vigilant when divulging any confidential information to third parties. The CRA has well established practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayers’ information. The CRA has notified the proper law enforcement authorities of this scam.

For information about this and other similar scams, or to report deceptive telemarketing activity, visit www.phonebusters.com, send an email to info@phonebusters.com, or call 1-888-495-8501.

enewsletter@goatoronto.com

The Goan Overseas Association is pleased to share this exciting educational opportunity with the youth (18-28 years of age) in the Toronto Goan community. The Commissioner of Non Resident Indian Affairs, the Honourable Eduardo Faleiro, has developed the "Know Goa Programme" for the benefit of youth of Goan origin, who are not Indian nationals, to provide them an opportunity to discover India, its glorious past, exciting present and promising future. All travel and accommodation costs will be covered. In addition, a daily allowance will be provided.

Under this programme, a total of 10 to 12 youth (18-28 years of age) from the Goan Diaspora across the world will be sponsored by the Non Resident Indian Affairs office annually on a 15-day visit to Goa and another state in India. While in Goa, the youth group will tour historical, educational, cultural and industrial places of interest. The visit for the first group is planned in the first fortnight of December 2008, when, besides places of interest in Goa, the group will be taken to Delhi for a few days before the participants return to their home countries.

The Goan Overseas Association will be forwarding the names of prospective participants to the Consulate General of India in Toronto by September 15th 2008.

Please e-mail Michelle Pereira at mpereira@goatoronto.com today for more details.
