TORONTO -
Freida Pinto was thrilled Friday to be
back in the city where her acclaimed movie "Slumdog
Millionaire" first took flight, noting audiences at
the Toronto International Film Festival were among
the first to praise the rags-to-riches saga.
"I'm very excited to be here," the Mumbai-raised
model-turned-actress, who made her film debut as the
love interest in the drama that's been nominated for
10 Oscars, said at a gala for the South Asian
lifestyles magazine Anokhi.
"In a strange way it's like my little gift back to
the city because this is where it all started. This
is where we had a first fan following, where we had
the first standing ovation given to us by the
press," said Pinto, 24, referring to the People's
Choice Award the film won at the Toronto festival
last September.
"I think in a strange way if this city hadn't
started it all for us, it could have been a bit more
difficult."
"Slumdog Millionaire," directed by Danny Boyle,
centres on an uneducated teen (Dev Patel) from the
slums of Mumbai who scores big on India's version of
the TV game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
Since it screened in Toronto, the low-budget drama
has gone on to become the darling of awards season,
dominating at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild
of America events, and being named best ensemble
cast from the Screen Actors Guild. |

Threads of Change
Noa Glouberman

As
a little girl sewing alongside her aunt in Kenya,
Amrita Sondhi began what she believed would simply
be a lifelong hobby. “My aunty Roshan was an amazing
seamstress and she lovingly taught me anything I
wanted to learn,” says Sondhi, from her yoga and
daily wear boutique and studio, Movement Global
Design, in Bowen Island, B.C.
“In Kenya, most of the ‘fashion’ I saw growing up
was on people who bought it in London or Europe.
There was a limited selection in Kenya, so when I
wanted the latest styles, I sewed them myself,” she
adds, fondly recalling a pair of hot pants in a
vertical tribal print.
Little did Sondhi know that the textile skills she
learned and loved in her homeland would become an
important thread in her Canadian journey.
It wasn’t until after she immigrated to Canada as a
youth that her future as a clothing designer and
businesswoman really started taking shape. After
completing a business administration degree with a
marketing focus from Simon Fraser University in
Burnaby, B.C., the passionate, energetic and
creative Sondhi decided to weave her new business
skills with her longtime love of fashion, along with
a growing personal penchant for socially conscious
thinking.
Sondhi’s entrepreneurial success in the clothing
industry began in her parents’ basement. “I launched
my first company, Tayari, about 20 years ago,” she
recalls. “Before I opened my shop, I oversaw
designers in Europe and garment-makers in India, and
sold the line to more than 100 Canadian retailers.” |

CURRY IS THICKER THAN WATER- New Book by Jasmine
D’Costa

Austin Clarke- Winner of The Giller Prize and
ommonwealth Literary Prize, writes:
The effulgence of
CURRY IS THICKER THAN WATER,
Jasmine D’Costa’s first collection of stories, is so
rewarding to read, so allegorical and at the same
time, so philosophical, that it heralds the
confidence I have in this young writer, who has laid
down the geography of a narrative that is so
gripping, as it introduces me, to the other broad,
new ethnicity in Canada’s literary landscape; and it
is made all the more effulgent, by its
multi-cultural point of view.
