Railway Goan Institute Centenary

On Sunday September 20, 2009,
former members of the Railway Goan Institute will be
celebrating the centenary of the club with a social in
Mississauga.

The Club founded in 1909, was well known for its sporting
and social activities in its sixty-year history. Its doors
were always open to those not working for the railways.
Friendships were forged on the sports field playing cricket,
hockey and soccer. The tennis and badminton courts were
popular places of social interaction in the Goan community.
The club at one time even had it’s own orchestra (1920).
Grand Balls held at the Club’s anniversary and at Christmas
were invariably sold out. Many happily married couples have
fond memories of their reception held at the club. The
women’s teams were busy too. The club attracted both beauty
and sporting prowess among it’s players which many agree has
not diminished with time.
A website tracing the history of the Club and displaying
photos of winning teams in various sports can be viewed at.

Members of the Centenary Committee include three-time field
hockey Olympian, Hilary Fernandes, and well known sports
journalist Norman Da Costa. Hilary and Norman report
spending hours on the phone with former colleagues who call
to reminiscence on times past. The trio of Delphine Da
Costa, Teresa Mandricks & Joan DoRosario are actively
informing former RGI members of the event. Elsie Fernandes
is busy mailing tickets to all those who have sent in
payments.
Preparing for the event itself is Xavier Carvalho (Emcee)
and Romeo D’Souza (slide-show)
Cataloguing the photos and web displays is John J. D’Souza (
rgicentenary @gmail.com)
As before the RGI made all welcome to its events. The same
goes for the Centenary Celebration. The organizers still
have 40-50 tickets left which are expected to run out soon.
