A new website dedicated to Goan Institute Nairobi Memorabilia can be viewed at http://sites.google.com/site/gimemorabilia

The goals of this collaborative undertaking are to:

  • salvage cherished items of interest that are probably deteriorating due to age, humidity, etc;
  • attempt to restore these items, where necessary;
  • create a repository of GI memorabilia for posterity at a single location
  • and make it easily accessible on the web for all to share and enjoy.

To date, a few folks have submitted items of interest which can be accessed via the links on the page. We ask that you go through your albums and mementos, scan the relevant materials that you would like to share and e-mail them to us at gimemorabilia@gmail.com

The web site was created by Merwin De Souza of Florida. His late father, Mr. Christie De Souza, a prominent Goan Institute member, was responsible for the 1955 GI Golden Jubilee Brochure, parts of which can be viewed at the site.

RAILWAY GOAN INSTITUTE – 100 YEARS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
PAYAL BANQUET HALL- Toronto
SEPTEMBER 20TH 2009.

Jumbo, Karibu:

The present Railway Goan Institute, (RGI), Committee members are proud and privileged in announcing this 100 year Centennial Celebration, which is being held at the Payal Banquet Hall, on Sunday 20th September, 2009.

All former RGI members and well-wishers are invited to come help celebrate this monumental achievement that has been 100 years in the making. The celebration lasts an entire day’s participation, with months of planning to get to where we are at present. It also allows us to pause and take stock of our heritage. In fact, the RGI Centennial Year, is such a thrilling Historical Milestone, in that, it enables us to have the chance to recognize the extraordinary people and circumstances in History that have created present day activities, which are brought “home” to mind!

With the passage of time, most failed to realize, this one of a kind Goan club, opened it’s doors to one and all, and extended a hand of friendship to all concerned, despite the many hardships they encountered along the way, and achieved their goals by “kicking up their heels” and building upon their dreams and turning it into a reality , which remains a happy synthesis, of indigenous tradition, as is evident in this upcoming celebration. What would they have given, had they been able to have gazed into a Crystal Ball and witnessed the fruits of their labor come to fruition, this far in time.!

To re-iterate further, it is an opportunity that comes along only once in 100 years. The chance to help commemorate the Centennial of your hometown. A place where we once called the RGI, “home away from home” and have remembrances of what life was when you were a child, have dreams of what life was which we all shared and enjoyed; - be it at indoor sports, social events, weddings, anniversaries, important meetings and social gatherings, concerts and most of all, a host of outdoor sports activities.

While we gaze back quizzically and wonder just how quickly time has flown, is indeed a thoughtful reflection of the many accomplishments of our Goan Community, who have strived to achieve what they had set out to do, despite the hardships encountered by our forefathers, during those trying times. It also enables us to look ahead and chart out the course for the next Century, with the hope that we can inspire and lead the next generation, to the here -in- after.

Your support allows us to share our beliefs with a broad audience, to bring about the importance of History by returning to where it all began and rediscovering the Country of our birth, which was ruined by tyranny and crazy regimes. But, strangely enough, and, sad as it may seem, for us to have to celebrate this Anniversary across the Globe and in another Continent, as we seek peace and redress in our adopted Country - this promised land of
“milk and honey”, as it is so dubbed, rather than “back home”, where it all began, is indeed a miracle, and we are fortunate to be around to witness this great achievement as we come together in celebration!

We proudly add our voices to the voices of other organizations, who have pledged their support and have assisted in a variety of ways, to help achieve our goal. Hence, the RGI’s One Hundred Years Executive Committee, would like to thank all those who have assisted and participated in one form or another in promoting this significant Historical Monumental Milestone.!

Therefore, our committee is pleased to welcome you to take a “stroll” down “memory lane” and scroll through the archives for an intriguing glimpse of amazing snapshots, writings and scripts and an abundance of nostalgic memories of events of yesteryear, which took place in ‘wanainchi” land. We invite you to browse thru’ the links on this page and learn more about it by clicking on
https://sites.google.com/site/railwaygoaninstitutecentenary/Home

Last, but not least, let us pay tribute to our loved ones who have
“crossed the great divide” and who have paved the way for our generation to enjoy the fruits of their labour – a labour of love, as we savor every minute of the Railway Goan Institute’s fond memories, which are locked in our hearts!

Congratulations – to the RGI’S Committee members for this once in a lifetime Jubilee celebration. So come one – come all and help raise your glasses, for old time’s sake, and drink a toast for this One hundred year
Centenary celebration, as we sing our praises, for
AULD LANG ZYNE!

Dear Goanetters,

Today, Goanet reaches a landmark 15 years in service. Goanet had a humble beginning 15 years ago with a group of 20 or so young students across the globe joining together to form the first Goan network online. The network has now grown to over 12,000 members worldwide.

To me, Goanet is more than merely a mailing list. It's been a family to me for these 15 years. Indeed, Goanet has been with me through good times and bad. Many of you have been there with me over the last 15 years as my life changed. We may not have met but we share a connection. I am sure many of you feel the same way. I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for making Goanet what it is today. We wouldn't be here as a group if it wasn't for your hard work, dedication and support. Special thanks goes to our volunteers who spend countless of thankless hours supporting the community. One of our volunteers (guess who) has volunteered for 14 years now. Amazing!

We deserve a collective congratulations as a group on this fantastic achievement.

Please feel free to make a comment on the public forum. I think we'd all be delighted to hear some stories and reminisce.

Happy 15th birthday Goanet!
