In Unemployment Report, Signs
of a Jobless Recovery

John Ryding and Conrad
DeQuadros, economists, RDQ
Economics note: “This is a
mixed report that, while
consistent with the view that the
recession has ended, suggests that
the slightly smaller-than-expected
decline in payrolls exaggerates
the improvement in the labor
market.”

country's anti-corruption agency
without seeking parliamentary
approval. U.S. Ambassador to Kenya
Michael Ranneberger said Thursday
that Mr. Kibaki's decision raises
"profoundly troubling questions,"

Pope: "The Earth is a precious gift of the Creator"
http://www.indiancatholic.in/news/storydetails.php/13173-1-12-Pope
Published : August 27 2009
Castel Gandolfo:
Creation, "matter intelligently structured by God", is gifted to all
men so they may benefit from its fruits and govern it, sharing its
wealth and concerning themselves so that even generations to come
may enjoy it. This principle reaffirmed by the Church inspired
Benedict XVI’s call to "international leaders" so they " to act
jointly respecting the law and promoting solidarity with the weakest
regions of the planet (cf. Caritas in veritate, 50) . This requires,
he told the 4 thousand people in the courtyard of the Apostolic
Palace of Castel Gandolfo for the general audience, "integral human
development for the benefit of generations, present and future, a
development inspired by the values of love in truth. For this to
happen it is essential to convert the current pattern of global
development towards greater and shared accountability for creation:
this is demanded not only by environmental emergencies, but also the
scandal of hunger and misery”

Our Future

First published in Herald.
Goans are being forced to accept a problematic
industry that has been rejected elsewhere in India,
says VIVEK MENEZES
It was a curious set of demonstrators who clogged the
open space of Azad Maidan this Wednesday, September 9.
They were almost all young men, under the age of 35.
They were almost
all Hindi speakers, with a rare Goan sprinkled in
between. And instead of gathering together in one
large group and listening to speakers -- as most
demonstrations in Azad Maidan play out -- these young
people stuck to their individual groups, milling
around one or two people of authority, laughing and
giggling among themselves like it was a company
picnic.

The Emergence Of
A New Goan Identity
http://www1.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-4977093,prtpage-1.cms
TNN 6 September 2009, 04:30am IST
Goa is undergoing drastic demographic changes, the
consequences of which a majority of Goans have not
realized. When Goa was liberated in 1961, its
population was just six lakh. Today the state's
population has more than doubled that. As per the
2001 census, Goa has a population of 14.5 lakh.
What is surprising is that almost 40% of this
population consists of people who have come from
other parts of the country and settled in the
state. There are some people who migrated to Goa
over 30 years back and have made Goa their second
home. They have contributed to Goa's development
in different ways and at the same time earned
their livelihood. In spite of this, they are often
branded as "voile", "bhaile", "ghantti" or
"non-Goans".

Paddy fields
turn over a new leaf with rains
The revived onslaught of the monsoon has spelt
good news for the State as it has virtually given
a new life to paddy cultivation and more
importantly the main dams have shown resurgence –
a positive sign for supply of potable water. The
second phase of the monsoon has brought
much-needed respite to the farmers, who have been
anxious about their crops following a partial dry
spell last month, are ecstatic in particular.

Women play vital
role in nurturing healthy families: Naik
The Minister for Women and Child Development, Mr
Ravi Naik heaped praises on women for the
important role played by them in nurturing healthy
families and a healthy society. Comparing women
with potters, he said, as a potter gives beautiful
and attractive shapes to clay, women, in the role
of mother, sister and daughter, infuse culture,
health and education in children and make them
capable of doing big things.

Incessant rains
posing threat to Arecanut yield
The cloudy weather and incessant rains in the last
two days has posed a threat to the 4,300 – odd
arecanut farmers registered with the agriculture
department in Ponda. Heavy rains have led to the
Arecanuts prematurely dropping from the palms.
Ponda taluka has the largest number of farmers who
cultivate Arecanuts in the state and this lot is
presently worried about the yield.

Church mourns
after Christian Chief Minister dies in air crash
http://www.indiancatholic.in/news/storydetails.php/13208-1-1-Christians
Hyderabad: The
death of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister of
Andhra Pradesh, leaves India without words. A 60 year
old Christian and leading member of Congress, Reddy
was considered one of the most influential long
standing politicians of the country. The discovery of
the wreckage of the helicopter in which he was
travelling with four other people has removed all
illusions for those who hoped that the news of the
disappearance of the aircraft, relayed on the
afternoon of September 2, would be denied.

is often that we hear about people we know who are keen on

Now members of our community have an opportunity to do what

Travel Advisory
Your Overseas Citizen Of India Card Is Not A Visa Substitute
When coming to India always consider yourself a foreigner
and bring your visa with you, there will be no exceptions.
Your OCI card is not a visa substitute.
Advice given to Canadian Passport holder with OCI Card:
When I arrived at Mumbai airport this time, the Immigration
Officer noticed that my Canadian Passport (with my OCI
endorsement) expires in May 2010. He told me that when I
renew my Canadian Passport, I should keep the old one (with
the OCI endorsement) together with the OCI card; otherwise
the OCI card on its own will not be valid. It pays to know
the law. See Also

The Man Beyond the Bridge
Paltadacho Munis
by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar
Drawing together a keen environmental sensitivity with a
nuanced view of village dynamics, The Man Beyond the Bridge
is a rare find from rural India. Unfolding in Konkani – a
language with no unique script that almost never appears in
films – this is a gentle romance set against the lovely
forest setting of Goa's Western Ghats.

Move
it! Physiotherapists urge parents to get
active with their children and keep them
moving this school year
TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW/
- It's the start of another
school year and Canadian physiotherapists
are taking this opportunity to talk tough
about the epidemic of overweight and
inactive children in this country. According
to Statistics Canada about 25 percent of
Canadian children are overweight. The Active
Healthy Kids Canada 2009 Report Card found
that only 13 percent of children and youth
are getting the 90 minutes of physical
activity recommended by Canada's Physical
Activity Guide. As primary health
practitioners, physiotherapists regularly
treat children and youth with injuries and
disease that are directly related to a lack
of physical activity or obesity. They are
deeply concerned that so few children and
youth are meeting the minimum daily
requirements of activity to allow for
healthy growth and development.
Physiotherapists say parents must act now to
help turn back the tide on childhood obesity
and inactivity by making this the year they
get their kids into after school sports or
other less formal physical activities.
