OTTAWA,

Canada has a

physical capital-machinery and
equipment, infrastructure and
buildings-to maximize output.
This helps to explain the
country's sluggish productivity
growth over the past 25 years,
the Conference Board argues in a
new report released today.

Congratulations to Canada’s two new auxiliary
bishops, Bishops William McGrattan, 53, and Vincent
Nguyen, 43. Their recent ordinations and calls to
serve the
archdiocese of Toronto provide an
injection of new ideas and fresh energy that can
only benefit a Catholic community undergoing rapid
growth both in sheer numbers and in challenges
associated with the region’s ever-widening cultural

Working for the Common Good of our Goan Heritage
Report by Muriel Lucas
The
Goan Archives Project, “Open House, held at the Older
Adult Centre, in Mississauga, Ontario, on the 20th
January, 2010, was visited by “4 Wise Men” ,who
began their “Maiden Voyage”, carrying messages
of ‘hope’, hauled in, not only their empty
boxes, but their gifts of knowledge, wisdom and
insight. These wise men, namely Claude Gomes, Cecil
D’Cruz and Uvy Lopes, from the East, and John D’Souza,
from the West, got off to a roaring start, with
this monumental task of reaching out to our Goan
Community in raising awareness as to the importance of
archiving important memorabilia of our Goan heritage.

Chilli cultivation gets a boost in Goa
Chilli cultivation is witnessing a major boost in
Goa. According to officials, the state is increasing
the area under chilli cultivation by sponsoring five
plots at different places in the state. At present
the state cultivates chillies mainly for dry chilli.
Though Goa does not fall under the major chilli
growing areas, demand is rising and farmers in the
state have been encouraged to cultivate green
chillies by the Goa State Horticulture Development

The Cross A
fading symbol in Pakistan

During the development of Karachi's
infrastructure, a large Catholic Goan community was
established by the British and the Irish before
World War II ...
See all stories
on this topic
The cross is the most widely recognised religious
symbol of Christianity. Down the years, the emblem
has faded from the public eye, rarely seen in the
humdrum of everyday life in Pakistan. Born and
raised a devout Protestant Christian and a part of
the country’s largest religious minority, the
increasing invisibility of the cross, despite its
ascent about two decades ago, seems unsettling to
me.

Viva Carnival, a charitable fundraiser to
assist Ann D'Souza and Ezekiel Rego.
Ann
D’Souza is 5 years of age, born
premature at 7 months and underweight.
Sadly, she has a condition referred to as
Microcephlia. What this means is that she
has an underdeveloped brain. Jessie D’Souza,
Anne’s mother is a special needs mother, as
she is required to provide constant care for
Ann. Ann’s food consists of formula,
administered via a feeding tube, which is in
use for 9 hours per day. The port site for
this tube is located in the abdomen causing
pain and discomfort depending on the
clothing worn. Currently, Jessie’s sister
looks after Ann while Jessie goes to work,
this however is a short term arrangement as
the sister will be going back to school
shortly. Ann attends a local school and has
a special education teacher for ½ the day.
The family will be in need of a caretaker
for Ann. While there is government funding
for this, it is specific to 8 hours per week
and Anne requires 24-hour assistance. A
caretaker cost approximately $15 per hour
and Jessie’s income supports her family
(Ann, 3-year-old brother and Jessie).
