Come Pray the
Rosary in Konkani - Ektaim Zavun Ters Korumya
The Church of the Holy
Rosary- Toronto
Introduction
The Rosary is considered a contemplative prayer and a vocal
prayer. Hence, as we pray vocally, we contemplate the
mysteries of our salvation. The mystery of salvation is
divided into the four sets: i.e. “The Joyful”,
“Luminous”, “Sorrowful” and “Glorious”. As the Rosary
month, (May), is fast approaching, let us all come together
to fervently pray the Rosary, meditating on the mysteries,
which have been handed us down from time immemorial.
Michael
Pinto from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is promoting an
initiative to have the Rosary in Konkani and the Litany sung
in Latin (LADAINHA). His plan is to produce a video
and broadcast it on the Internet site. It will be available
24/7 on demand.
Michael has taught at St. Britto’s, Mapuca and was an
Engineer with PWD in Panjim, India. Currently managing his
consultancy for Process Improvement & Project Management.
Muriel Lucas of the Goan Archives, conducted an online
interview with Michael to learn more about the initiative.
The following is a transcript.
-
Michael can you
outline the mission of “Come Pray the Rosary in Konkani”.
In particular why Konkani ?
MP: I remember these
stories narrated to me by friends in Goa. People use mobiles
(cell phones) during the round-up of a pig before a festival
celebration, Paddekar ( Coconut Plucker) use it too. A
fisherwoman in the market calls her favorite client when the
special fish arrives. That got me into thinking, if they can
use the technology, then why can’t I use to broadcast the
Rosary worldwide?. With advances in technology, we can have
access to Rosary in Konkani on demand worldwide, and hence
preserve our language and culture
-
How do you plan to
get it done?
MP: I have sought
support from a similar site that is conducting the Rosary on
demand in English and emulate same methodology.
-
What is the timeline
– when do you expect to get it done.?
MP: Initial target is to
have a video recording completed by 11th April 2010, with a
week for post-production activities.
-
Why the urgency ?
MP: The month of May
being the month of the “Rosary” this website worldwide
should be active by 1st May 2010.
-
You said the video
taping would be done in Toronto – Why Toronto?
MP: Most of the Konkani
speaking population in Canada is in Toronto area and the
initial survey found lot of support for the project
-
It seems that you
will need quite a team of Volunteers to get it done – will
that be difficult?
MP: Yes, it has been
very difficult and time consuming, but many believers in the
cause of the project have come forward to volunteer.
-
There will be a need
for rehearsals so that the recitation is heard clearly in
the Konkani we all understand.
MP: We will need
rehearsal from a small lead group recite and choir who will
sing the litany in Latin (Ladainha)
-
The actual taping -
when is it scheduled for?
MP: Tentatively on
Sunday April 11th 2010 at 2pm – 3.30 pm, at the
Church of the Holy Rosary in Toronto. (Midland and
Finch).

-
For the Konkani
speaker in the GTA, how can they register to be part of the
congregation for the day itself. Who do they have to
contact.?
MP: In the meantime,
they can contact me at
Konkanirosary@hotmail.com for further
information.
-
ML In time when
there is the need to know the latest developments, is there
a website we can go to for more information?.
The progress status will be communicated through Goan Voice
@
www.goanvoice.ca
appropriately.
In Conclusion: The Ultimate purpose is to invite more of the people to join
in reciting the Rosary in Konkani, across and around the
Globe, thereby, encouraging our future generation to
continue from where we left off !
Meantime, we invite one and all to join us in prayer at the
Church of the Holy Rosary, at the address given
above.

Your chance
to be a part of Goan history .. Konkani filmbook: Seeking
sponsors
Message from George Pinto -
georgejpinto@yahoo.com
I am personally assisting Goan journalist/writer Isidore
Dantas publish a book in Romi Konkani script on Konkani
films (31 to date). See more information on Isidore and the
book below. It is a
valuable information covering all 31 celluloid Konkani films
made to date (music, songs, actors/actresses, etc.). A
scholarly and well-researched book which belongs in every
Goan household, this book is destined to be a classic.
The book is yet to be published given the challenge of the
traditional model to sell Goans books (they are rarely
profitable which discourages Goan authors from publishing).
As a means to be creative and innovative to make the
publishing model work in this case and to make this a
community effort, I am appealing to the larger public to
help with funds for publishing the book. If any one is
willing to donate to the publishing costs in any amount in
excess of US $100, their name or
in memory of someone will be listed as a sponsor in the book
in a tasteful manner. This way your association with such an
iconic classic and legendary book will be there for
posterity.
Please note that one or two sponsors could cover the cost of
publishing the book, but a community effort is more
appealing. Now is the time for Goans to actually help,
rather than keyboard about all the ills that affect Goa
while doing nothing. Do something now. Do it for Goa. Be a
part of Goan history.
Please email me at
georgejpinto@yahoo.com and let me know. The deadline for Sponsorship closes March
10, 2010.
Thank you.

ISIDORE DANTAS - brief profile:
I have been writing to Konkani magazines from the
age of eleven. At present I am 62. I have contributed to
Aitarachem Vachop, Udentechem Nekhetr, Vauraddeancho Ixtt,
Sot, Divtti, The Goan Sports Weekly, Gulab, Poddbimb. I now
regularly write for Jivit in Roman script and for Uzvadd in
Devnagri script. Whenever time permits I contribute to Goa
Today, Gomantak Times and Sunaparant. My first book on
Konkani proverbs was released in September 2007 entitled
Vozram-a treasure trove of Konkani adages with English
interpretation at the hands of the Goa Chief Minister. In
October 2008, I was awarded the Al Jerry Braganza Award for
the work on Konkani films again at the hands of Goa CM.
Besides this, I regularly contribute to Akashwani, Mumbai. I
have also written the sub-titles for the Konkani film DVD
Bhuianrantlo Monis.
The research work on celluloid Konkani films which I now
wish to publish consists of about 300 pages with about 250
photographs. It comprises of information on all 31 Konkani
celluloid films produced so far in Goa, Karnataka and
Maharashtra. It includes Black... produced in Kuwait and
also the latest Poltoddcho Monis which won award at the
Toronto Festival. The book contains 101
songs out of which 85 are with music notes. The book also
consists of a chapter on Konkani people who have contributed
to Bollywood. |
