Wanted: Memories of Bramalea
Brampton Guardian | By PAM DOUGLAS | May 1, 2010
Bramalea is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and
current and former residents are being asked to help make
the festivities memorable. Volunteers to join the
anniversary organizing committee are needed, and so are
everyone’s stories, memories, photographs and memorabilia.
Displays, sports events and a walk down memory lane will all
be part of the celebrations throughout June.
Some of the festivities are being organized at area
recreation centres, and each has a volunteer neighbourhood
committee set up to help with the planning, but more
volunteers are needed. Bramalea Councillors Gael Miles and
Sandra Hames say the theme for the anniversary will be
Family, Fun and Community. “Bramalea has always been known
as a family community,” said Miles, who moved to the area in
1975.
“It is a great place to raise kids,” Hames, who moved here
in 1969, agreed. “Anything they wanted to do was here— the
nice greenspace, the recreation programs.”
The main organizing committee has approximately 70 members,
but more are needed to spearhead all of the events being
planned. There is a group looking at the history of the
area, another organizing sports events and the Mayor’s Youth
Team is writing a jingle to capture the significance of the
occasion.
Bramalea was Canada’s first satellite planned community that
included a parkland trail system of green belts and a
downtown that included essential services and a shopping
centre. Each phase was built with progressing first letters
of street names. Development started with the A section.
Photographs can be emailed to
