Goan youth too
sossegado?
Goa Sudharop Youth event Toronto,
Sunday, June 6
From:
georgejpinto@yahoo.com
| By Cellie Gonsalves
I’m impressed with
Shilla Almeida. She is a 20 year old from San
Francisco, California, USA, International Youth
Coordinator for Goa Sudharop, who visited Goa in
early 2010 and shared her experiences with Goan
Canadian youth in Toronto on June 6, 2010 at the Goa
Sudharop Youth event (www.goasudharop.org).
Among her varied experiences was a visit to St.
Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Goa. In a show of hands
only 2 or 4% of the 50 college students in
attendance at a youth workshop indicated that they
were registered voters. Why? They don't care. They
don't believe. They are disillusioned. It appears
that no political party in Goa has used the energy
of the young to promote the goals of the State.
That's the bottom line.
“Sossegado” is a bad word in Shilla’s vocabulary
because it is the antithesis of what she learns at
home from her role models, her parents. She takes
risks. She is energy driven. She is ambitious and
she is willing to sacrifice. She believes in youth
power and that Goan youth all over the world can
make a difference to the youth in Goa.
DO something for Goa, is her rallying cry. Stay
connected with Goa, offer your expertise, volunteer,
collect money, materials and toys to be sent to
schools in Goa to facilitate their education needs.
During short visits to Goa , check out the schools,
get involved in youth workshops, arrange partnership
with local student councils. Indicate your area of
interest to Goa Sudharop and they will help you to
make arrangements in Goa for visits to local
schools, shipping etc., just send George Pinto an
email at
georgejpinto@yahoo.com.

Goan artist
Arthur D'Souza unveils Pieces of Me to spotlight
layers of life
http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?storyid=280200
Posted on » Sunday, June 13, 2010
BAHRAIN-BASED
Goan artist Arthur D'Souza will unveil
his latest work at the opening of his exhibition
today. The exhibition, entitled Pieces of Me, will
open at the Qalat Al Bahrain (Bahrain Fort) Museum,
Karbabad.
It will feature mixed media artworks that explore
the themes of duality, such as success and failure,
progress and decay that exists in everyday life,
said organisers. Using a technique he refers to as
"positively paper", Mr D'Souza creates his artworks
with positive film and coloured paper layered
between two sheets of glass, one between the paper
fragments and positive film and another on top.
The
method creates a divide between the paper and the
film, allowing each to retain its unique
characteristics, while simultaneously acting as the
glue that holds the final piece together, said Mr
D'Souza.
It also gives the work a special luminosity since
the glass seems to trap light, while giving the
piece something of a 3-D effect, he added.
"I discovered my present technique purely by
accident," said Mr D'Souza.
"I continued to experiment, mixing screen angles
with paper textures, exposing under layers of paper,
using a range of opacities and introducing fabric
with positive films of differing resolutions.
"Because I work with my hands through a constantly
evolving process, each new piece has a unique
quality about it, and this is reflected in my more
recent works.
"In fact, the process itself could be seen as life
in death, because it involves the destructive act of
tearing paper on one hand and then the restorative
one of putting it together in the pursuit of an
aesthetic end result."
The exhibition is being held under the patronage of
the Culture and Information Ministry and will be
open daily from 8am to 8pm until July 3 starting
from tomorrow. |

Goan cuisine Gallery

GOA
- Just saying the word makes me think of Goan food!
With influences from the Portuguese rule, its
neighbouring South-Indian states, the Arabian Sea on
the west and the mix of Hindu and Christian
dwellers, Goa is diverse and multi-cultural in its
homes, languages and scripts, festivals and food.
The Mardi Gras-like carnivals and its pork dishes
can be attributed to Portugal while the seafood
comes from the Arabian Sea; coconut, kokum (Konkan
specialty) and intense spices are influences of
South India and Feni, the cashew-fruit drink comes
from its tropical climate.
Goan cuisine comprises Hindu vegetarian and the
Portuguese-influenced non-vegetarian (seafood &
pork) Catholic food.
