Konkani Rocks At World Goa Day Fete
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/6385207.cms?prtpage=1
TNN, Aug 21, 2010,

PANAJI: Thirteen years after it was recognized as the official language of Goa, Konkani through its tiatr and its 'nightingale' Lorna ruled a 'World Goa Day' celebration in Panaji - one of many in Goan pockets across the world - on Friday.

Watching the tiatr Thikann (Destination) play out in a by-lane of Campal, Ashton Garreth, 19, of Panaji said, "I love watching tiatrs. I go for as many as I can at the Kala Academy. Many of my friends enjoy it too and we have them at our parish during feasts."

Minash Sequeira, 18, on the other hand, does not enjoy tiatrs "as I get lost (in the script)"; but "I like such events that help me learn more about Goa".

And there was much to learn for those who had come from both sides of the river Zuari.

While Goan arts and handicrafts were on display; there was Goan food to be hand and children from the nearby St Inez slum, mostly from Karnataka, performed a Konkani song. The children had been trained by the Heritage Jazz team, co-organizers of the event along with the state tourism and handicraft departments.

With the tiatr written by Christopher Menezes of Divar in the backdrop, Tomazinho Cardozo, president of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, said, "The audience we have tonight (mostly urban, non-Konkani speaking) is not the usual tiatr-going type, which means tiatr is gaining a wider audience."

The Konkani host for the evening, Cardozo added, "Tiatrs should be brought out of the halls and into the gardens and neighbourhoods, on stages like this, where people can come and enjoy. This will draw more people to Konkani as well."

His English-speaking co-host, Sonia Shirsat added, "Before I was called Goa's fadista, I would sing in Konkani. Although I do not speak it at home I am able to and can understand it well. And for me Konkani music is synonymous with Lorna and vice versa. She is my idol. When I sing a song she sang I just feel so emotional."

And just like that, with the patter of the rain a little softer, the lady in black walked around the stage waving at a crowd applauding wildly.

"Lorna is that one singer who broke barriers," said acclaimed musician Remo Fernandes, who much later into the night brought the curtains down on the event by performing Bebdo in duet with Lorna. Earlier on, however, he said, "In a time when Konkani was shunned by the so-called upper classes and caju feni was not drunk by the snooty circles of Panaji, it was Lorna's Konkani songs, written by Chris Perry, which broke through the glass ceiling."

He elaborated, "At that point Konkani went through a much-needed revival and suddenly shot to popularity and it was good. It gave us growing up a sense of identity. I grew up speaking Portuguese but when I was old enough to realize, I started speaking and singing Konkani."

"Having said that I don't believe language makes a person, because our politicians give perfect speeches in Konkani, yet rape Goa," said Remo.

Meanwhile, Lorna Cordeiro aka Lorna was undoubtedly the showstopper of the evening. Performing with an eight piece brass and electronic ensemble, she performed some of her timeless tunes.

"I postponed my flight back to Germany just to witness this," gushed Cynthia Fernandes, a Goan settled in Dusseldorf. "This is a true celebration of Goan culture and what it means to be a Goan," she added.

A nostalgic Ranjana Kakodkar from Margao added, "I have been listening to Lorna for the last 50 years and I still can't stop getting emotional every time I hear her." Photographer Anoop Negi, a native of Dehradun, smiled, "I don't understand a word but my heart does. I love the sound of Konkani, it's so musical." Konkani artistes Webly Gomes of Cuncolim and Siddhanath Buyao of Margao performed during the breaks in Lorna's performances.

Speaking about the event while rushing around overseeing its organization, CEO of Heritage Jazz, Armando Gonsalves said simply, "I just want Goans to come together and forget their differences. This is for Lorna. I want people to give her the honour, respect and praise she deserves. She is the queen."

Remo signed off, "This day is more for those who don't live here. They need a World Goa Day. We live here and everyday is a celebration of Goa. Everyday is a World Goa Day for me."

Patoieanche Fest -Salvador do mundo - "World Goa Day Celebrations"
http://goankrazy.blogspot.com/2010/08/patoieanche-fest-salvador-do-mundo.html
Sunday, August 22, 2010

The World Goa Day celebration in Goa. This time it was the Patoieanche Fest which was held today i.e. 22nd August, 2010 at Salvador Do Mundo, Paitona in the court yard of the Majestic Chapel of Our Lady of Hope, which was built in the year 20-10-1767.

It was an amazing and as promised the Eco friendly Patoianchem Fest was joined by the young and old. The main features of the festival were that it had NO CHIEF GUEST, NO SPONSORS, NO ALCOHOL,NO PRIZES, NO PLASTIC, NO COMPETITIONS, but as in the good old days, there will be a lot of fun and Community spirit on display, plus what GOANS are good at, MUSIC, FOOD, SINGING, DANCING ,ETC.

Ashley and his Amigos the music band entertained the crowd with their music. The main features however for me was the games of Katodieo (blind fold coconut breaking contest), ‘Koindabal’ (hitting one stick with another), ‘Godde’ (marbles) and ‘Gontamni’ (hopscotch). Apart from these there was entertainment in the form of Konkani songs, cultural dances, performed by the people.
All the people who had come to the event were served kanji(pez) in coconut sheels (cotti) with pickle. They were later served great food which consisted of Pulao, Chicken xachuti, Salad and pickle.

It was a total community effort right up from setting up the show, organizing the various cultural programs, the games, the decorations, the amazing home cooked food and the most most admired part for me was that after all left they cleared up the whole area where the function was held and swept it clean.

Congratulation to Mario and his village people, Great Job

Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF) the cultural body of the popular Konkani-English bi-monthly The Goan Review celebrates the World Konkani Day 2010 at Antonio D'Souza High School Hall, Byculla, Mumbai on Sunday 29th August, 2010 at 7.00 p.m.

World Konkani Day is being celebrated in recognition of Konkani as one of the national languages of the country. This year, August 20, commemorates the 18th anniversary of inclusion of Konkani in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The stress of this year's celebration is on the many clubs (kudd) of the Goans & Mangaloreans in Mumbai, which are slowly becoming extinct.
