Do we need - A Goan Community Organisation?
Message To: goanet at goanet.org | Sent: 18 July 2011 23:51

Dear Editor,

I attach an article in which I have expressed my views on the kind of organisation that might best serve an overseas Goan community. It may be of interest to your readers and, in particular, to those attending the forthcoming Global Goans Convention in London from 22 July.

My humiliating experiences as a (Goan) book-seller
To goa-book-club@googlegroups.com | By: Selma Cardoso

Dear all,

I have decided to put these thoughts together in the hope that it will help writers and publishers.

After three days of book-selling, the first two days at the (UK Goan) Convention to a select crowd of approximately 200 people each day, and the last day at the festival to a crowd of approximately 5000 people, I have come to the hideous conclusion that we are a society that does not read. Not only that, we are a society that probably has contempt for stimulation caused by anything other than feni. (Ok, these statements are exaggerated because I am reeling from a combination fatigue and assorted disorders). But you can ask Rajendra Talak (the producer of O Maria) and the lovely actress Priyanka with whom I shared stall-space and delicious chit-chat, if you want a second opinion.

Taking the (Goan) diaspora seriously?

Column by Frederick Noronha

As a people, we Goans routinely pull down one another. Bad mouthing is a State pastime. We lack the entrepreneurial and organisational gene. So this impacts us all the more.

Have you heard this one? Q: How many engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None.

They are all too busy trying to design the perfect light bulb.

Bazaar Day – Westend Seniors Club, Toronto
By Lenny Lopes

Kudos to the Toronto Westend Seniors Club who have once again held another superb event, the “Bazaar Day” on Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Fairfield Centre, Etobicoke. The previous two very successful events namely, “The Crazy Hat Day” and “Beach Party” were both, not only a tremendous success, but also thoroughly enjoyed by the members and their guests.

Goan Fish Curry, Mango Chammanthi, Fish Fry and Red Rice
http://www.dinner365.com/day-goan-fish-curry-mango-chammanthi-fish-fry-and-red-rice/

One of the hottest day so far and tomorrow is gonna be a scorcher. I couldn’t even stand on my backyard it was scorching hot. I had to wait to cool a bit to water my garden. I have not been doing any outdoor activities lately as I get exhausted if I stand outside for a while, so I am trying to hide from the heat. For dinner, I made Goan fish curry served with red rice. Also, I made Mango chammanthi or raw mango combined with grated coconut and fish fry. It was a scrumptious dinner.

Evolution Transforms The Galapagos Islands

So you think that because you have been to the National Parks or wild-life habitats in places like Africa, Madagascar, Australia, Indonesia, India or Brazil, you have seen it all. Think again. In all these, animals are as afraid of humans as humans are of them.

The Goan Pig
Armand Rodrigues

The name of no animal is more maligned in any language than that of the humble pig. Swine, hog and boar are used as synonyms. Ass, donkey, cat and others cannot hold the candle to Pig when it comes to derogatory usage. No other three-letter word conveys a better connotation of a greedy, dirty, smelly, sulky, immoral, obstinate or annoying person. Any wonder feminists use it in invectives like male chauvinist pig?
