Jack Layton's letter to Canadians

Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change.

While his means maybe Gandhian, his demands are certainly not.

If what we're watching on TV is indeed a revolution, then it has to be one of the more embarrassing and unintelligible ones of recent times. For now, whatever questions you may have about the Jan Lokpal Bill, here are the answers you're likely to get: tick the box -- (a) Vande Mataram (b) Bharat Mata ki Jai (c) India is Anna, Anna is India (d) Jai Hind.

Respect dissenting voices on corruption

I cannot in honesty agree with the tactics of Hazare and his supporters. An attitude of self-righteousness, blatant arrogance, fascism and blackmail seem to be high on their agenda.

Does Anna's Civil Society Represent the Nation?

All sections of Indian society have suffered by corruption and all must fight against it. Everybody has rights to protest against corruption in democratic manner. Civil society's fight has big role in bringing policies, laws and plan of actions against corruption. Absolutely, time has come for the nation like India to have strong law against corruption and India has mechanism to make it as freed nation and in democratic manner. Having said these, there are many unanswered questions, related to whole issue of corruption, representation of civil society and uprising of anti corruption movement claimed by Team Anna.

India is a vast nation with a growing population base supported by thriving economic growth which has transformed the nation into a preferred business hub for the world’s most developed countries. No longer is India tagged as a developing nation, rather it has become an ‘emerging economy’ in the terminology used by the multilaterals of the world. Despite these encouraging facts, the country today faces challenges of equitable and sustainable development coupled with our collective social responsibility towards environment preservation and climate change.
