03 April 2012

As part of Canadian immigration's plan to reduce the backlog of visa applications, the government will be rejecting almost 300,000 people who applied for a Canadian visa before 2008. Their applications are being returned and $130 million worth of fees will be refunded as the government aims to decrease the massive backlog they say has been standing in the way of major reform to the immigration system.

Why Hire Immigrants?
http://alliescanada.ca/why-hire-immigrants/

Immigrants are a key resource for building and strengthening Canada, particularly in light of our aging population, our declining birth rate and the global competition for talent.

Canada brings in roughly 250,000 immigrants per year. This figure is comprised of economic immigrants and their families, family class immigrants and refugees. Of these, the largest group are economic immigrants. This includes individuals selected through the skilled worker and provincial nominee programs. Immigrants in this category are highly skilled and educated and are best equipped to meet the needs of our evolving economy.

Decline of religion, rise of spirituality
Posted on April 9, 2012, Indian Catholic News
By Desmond de Sousa

The Catholic Church sooner or later has to take account of the most explosive phenomenon of modern civilization: the emergence of a desire for full self-determination on the part of individuals.

Panaji: Today in India when people hear about any miraculous happenings they rush in droves to see them, believing that God is somehow present. The implication is that God is present only in the extraordinary happenings and events, and abandons us in the ordinary events of life. In other words, God acts only in a few extraordinary events of life, and not in the numerous, continuous routine of ordinary events of history.

Studying Goan migration... Down Under
Postes on GoaNet by Frederick Noronha
First published in Gomantak Times, April 9, 2012.

In today's globalised world, distance seems to matter less than every before. Economic opportunity, access for jobs or cultural openness can make Sydney, Doha or Perth seem like a suburb of Mapusa or Margao. A book one recently received and called 'Goenkars in Western Australia' only further underlines such possibilities.
