Canada failing to close the income inequality gap

Ottawa, Feb. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Canada has been unable to reverse the rise in income inequality - and poverty rates - that occurred in the 1990s. Low rankings on these social equity measures mar an otherwise solid "B" grade in The Conference of Canada's Society report card, released today.  Canada places 7th in the How Canada Performs: Society analysis, based on international data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

[Gulf Goans] LETTER TO THE EDITOR at Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter - A PATHBREAKING CARNIVAL 2013
From: Wendell Rodricks Design Space | Retreat N Style <>
Date: Fri, Feb 15, 2013 at 2:37 PM | Sat, Feb 16, 2013 at 4:57 AM

The Editor

Over the years, we the people of Goa have celebrated carnival out of a sense of Christian tradition. Time has changed this emotion and is now firmly rooted in all our hearts, homes and beloved land. There are many critics who complain that carnival no longer upholds tradition and that governments have, for their own vested interests, diluted this cultural event. The spirit of carnival is about people coming together. not just the Goan people but Indians and tourists from the world over. What we have in Goa is a carnival unlike the grand show in Rio. It is the inherent simplicity, showcasing the tradition and culture of Goa that is appealing in a very palpable emotion.

Mel D’Souza’s Review of MORE MATATA – Love After the Mau Mau (2012),

Mel D’Souza, born in Tanzania, went to school in the Goan village of Salig„o, and is the author of Feasts, Feni and Firecrackers-Life of a Village Schoolboy in Portuguese Goa (2007). He lives in Brampton, Ontario, with his wife, Lineth.

At last we have a book that answers the WHO, WHAT and WHY about the distinct Goan society. More Matata by Braz Menezes is a book that needs to be read by anyone who may wish to learn more about Goans, and particularly by those with Goan roots who seem to be striving in vain to “discover their identity”.

Gerhard A. Fuerst- Book Review: of Bwana Karani, author Mervyn Maciel
(Merlin Books Ltd., Braunton, Devon, 1985, 262 pages, P/B, ISBN 0 86303 261-3)

Any government is maintained and held secure by tightly woven fibers in the fabric of administration, and held together by a vast assembly and assortment of loyal workers into whose hands the fabric has been entrusted, to be maintained in pristine condition: a cadre of administrators from top to bottom. It is a pyramid scheme of command, control, and commitment, a network of order and instruction, of communication of policy directives and the responses by those who dutifully carried out all the given details with an inordinate sense of duty, discipline and dedication. That is how colonies once were governed, and what held the tightly woven fabric of local and regional administrations together. That is how it also was in Kenya, a significant part of British East Africa, where the author Mervyn Maciel found his niche as Bwana Karani, and where over a long time of very skillful and dedicated service he gradually rose in the ranks of the colonial civil service.

Reminiscences of Zanzibar - Dead Beat
By George (Ives) Pereira

An article describing some reminiscences of Zanzibar of about 60 years ago. It was first posted to the Goans Tanzanite mailing list on Yahoogroups.

We grew up in a society in the developing world where everything at that time was pretty basic. Vegetables in the market were fresh and grown organically by farmers who were not in touch with enhancing chemicals as they are today. However, any food bought from the local market needed to be sanitized when one got home. There was a chicken market where live chickens could be bought that somehow knew that they were there for only one purpose from the continuous cackle that sounded more like a protest and sometimes resembled a dirge. You made your choice. If the chicken looked and felt plump you bought it subject to heated bargaining that usually sounded like a contrived quarrel. It was then taken home in a bag with the claustrophobic chicken vocally objecting to being unceremoniously hijacked and transferred to an unknown destination.
