Sent to Goan Voice Canada by May D’Souza of Mississauga

Like everybody else, I was surprised to hear that Pope Benedict was resigning. But I was also relieved for him. It has been painfully obvious that he is declining. At Christmas, we saw him wheeled around on that rolling platform. He looked tired. It was time to resign.

The inclement weather and short notice did not deter members from attending g TEGSA’s ever-popular Valentine Bonanza.

Vice-President, Jean Andrade, welcomed and thanked members for attending in such large numbers despite the odds. On entry, the ladies were welcomed with a complementary gift package, courtesy TEGSA. The hall was adorned with pink, red and white tablecloths and the tables were strewn with sprinkles of hearts and petals and a very creative centerpiece. All this gave a real sense of “armour” to the occasion. The lively atmosphere was set from the get go.

UM... UM... PA... PA: OF MAKING MUSIC IN AN OLD ZANZIBAR FORT
By George (Ives) Pereira

An article describing some reminiscences of Zanzibar of about 60 years ago. Thanks to Mervyn Lobo <mervynalobo at yahoo.ca> for sharing it with Goanet Reader. It was first posted to the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goans_tanzanite/Goans  Tanzanite mailing list on Yahoogroups.

Excerpt from http://www.zanzibarhistory.org/Goa_and_Zanzibar.htm
There were also Goan artists, landscape designers and musicians in old Zanzibar. The Sultan's excellent Band had many Goan musicians and for more than 10 years was lead by a Goan Bandmaster; Isaac Koth D'souza.

In most all public events in old Zanzibar there were sure to be Goans in attendance. As in this 1880's description of a parade.

"This A.M. I saw the Sultan... He went down to call on the English Counsel General and passed our house. The road on one side from the Palace to the English Cousin General's house was lined by soldiers. First came the band playing 'God save the Queen.' This band is fine. They are all Europeans. Their equipments are fine, their uniform red and gold with white pants, and their playing is really good.50 ... Then came lots and lots of old bucks and Arabs...then came a few fine looking old fellows in gorgeous uniforms, then more Arabs, one of whom was the Sultan, then drums and fifes and more soldiers, then the greater part of the natives of Zanzibar.

The HTC One is a beautiful Android phone with an astounding camera
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/the-htc-one-is-a-beautiful-android...
Excerpts from article by:By Sean Ludwig | VentureBeat.com, Published: February 20

New York — HTC has had a tough run in the past few years, with its revenues shrinking and its Android smartphones consistently losing buzz to Samsung. It needs a jumpstart.

The company held an event Tuesday in New York City to do just that, and it used the event to announce a new flagship Android phone — the HTC One. After using the phone for a few minutes, I found the HTC One to be a well-built beast that is full of smart features. It has a 4.7-inch display 1080p display, a 1.7-GHz quad-core processor and runs Android 4.1.2 with the new “Sense 5″ skin of Android.

Garca Brança - One-of-a-Kind Resort In Goa
By Armand Rodrigues

Click photos to Enlarge

In a higgledy-piggledy environment, with no regard for building codes, cleanliness or sanitation, and with the highest density of cars, scooters and motorbikes in the subcontinent of India, hogging narrow winding roads, parts of GOA resemble a shantytown or slum. Against this forbidding backdrop, far from the madding crowds, traffic chaos and pollution, is a microcosm of the Bavarian penchant for neatness. It is the GARCA BRANCA (white egret) resort in Loutolim, South Goa. Owner, Carlos Mascarenhas, can rightly be proud of how he saw his dream come to fruition in this veritable gem he created. No detail has been spared.

From Stone Age to Modern Age, from colonized to globalized world, immigration has been a phenomenon by itself. Goans have been migrating before, during and after colonial times. Goans traded in East Africa in the 10th century which shows that they were truly seafarers and intercontinental movers. Later on, during Portuguese colonial rule, Christian Goans became a part of the Portuguese seafaring tradition.

Margao: A silent revolution in the field of paddy cultivation is brewing in the hinterlands of South Goa. Take a ride or a drive down the hamlets of Netravali in Sanguem and swathes of green fields tilled by a new technique of rice cultivation-termed as System of Rice Intensification (SRI)- greet the visitor. A village which had been ravaged by mining is poised to take a modest leap into the innovative method of paddy cultivation-at least that's the promise the innovators hold.
