What made Goa sustainable
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/What-made-Goa-sustainable...
By Ehrlich Desa | Mar 16, 2013, 03.18 AM IST

Goa's population remained around 600,000 until the 1980s that was the bases for its sustainability. Many factors contributed to population stability the principal ones being higher ages at marriage, equitable wealth sharing between sons and daughters, and a tradition that accepted the unmarried adult.

The Pope of Surprises

Pope Francis has surprised us all... and this is only the beginning!

The first non-European, the first Jesuit, the first to choose the name of Francis....

And here's another list of firsts (or suprises), which I compiled, as they came hitting me, from the moment I saw him on the famous loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.

Rote learning is at the heart of education
http://www.dnaindia.com/
Daily Telegraph / Harry Mount / Friday, March 22, 2013 9:48 IST

When future generations come to study the causes of Britain's global decline, Exhibit A will be a letter published this week in the Daily Telegraph, signed by 100 academics from across the UK. In it, the various professors attacked Michael Gove's proposed national curriculum for consisting of "endless lists of spellings, facts and rules". My God, the madness! Sometimes the Education Secretary must wake up in the morning and wonder whether it's all worth the struggle. His opponents are of such a deep strain of perverse idiocy that it is impossible toargue with them - ideology has defeated reason.

Can India become a great power?
http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21574511-indias-lack-strategic-culture-hobbles...
Posted on GoaNet by Luis Vas | Wed Mar 27 2013

NOBODY doubts that China has joined the ranks of the great powers: the idea of a G2 with America is mooted, albeit prematurely. India is often spoken of in the same breath as China because of its billion- plus population, economic promise, value as a trading partner and growing military capabilities. All five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council support—however grudgingly—India’s claim to join them. But whereas China’s rise is a given, India is still widely seen as a nearly-power that cannot quite get its act together.

Social isolation may cause dire health effects for the elderly.

A new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on March 26, showed that older men and women who are apart from their family and friends had a 26 percent higher death risk during a seven year period who were the most social.

Older and wiser? Older and happier too, says the Revera Report on Happiness

Happiness and optimism increase with age; poll results challenge ageist stereotypes, says expert

Toronto, March 18, 2013 /CNW/ - Robert Browning once said, "Grow old along with me; the best is yet to be," and new research from Revera Inc., a Canadian leader in seniors' accommodation, care and services, reveals Canadian seniors agree. According to the Revera Report on Happiness - released just prior to the first annual United Nations International Day of Happiness - the older you are, the happier you are. Canadian seniors (66-plus years of age) are more likely than any other generation to report that 'aging means you are happier;' in fact, they are twice as likely as Gen X and Baby Boomers to make the statement.
