Books Are Dead

From Editorial in Brampton Guardian – August 29, 2013

American inventor Thomas Edison—the man who brought us the phonograph, movie camera and the electric light bulb— predicted that books would become obsolete in schools. That was 100 year ago. He was right. It’s just taking a little longer than the 100 years he predicted for book learnin’ to go the way of the dodo. Then again, Edison was a man ahead of his time.

Europeans of An Other Colour -- Why the Goans are Portuguese (Ferrao & Fernandes, Kafila.org)
http://kafila.org/2013/08/31/europeans-of-an-other-colour-why-the-goans-are-portuguese...
By R. Benedito Ferrão & Jason Keith Fernandes | Goanet Reader  |Sat Aug 31, 2013 | 12child@gmail.com & jason.k.fernandes@gmail.com

August 31, 2013: This article serves as a response to Sir Andrew Green's comment on the alleged misuse of Portuguese citizenship by Indian nationals of Goan origin whom the Daily Star and the Daily Mail have characterized as immigrants who travel to Great Britain to take advantage of it. Green's perspective from a few months ago mirrors prevalent xenophobic views on the rights of immigrants to Europe; hence, the counterpoint offered here hopes to challenge such bias as it will surely continue to be expressed.

Row after Goa official Education Director Anil Powat calls Church schools ‘pampered’
Roger dsouza rdsg2000 at gmail.com | Fri Sep 6 20:29:47 PDT 2013

The following article is from the First Post and the shocking attack by Education Director Anil Powar's and allegations and attack on Church Schools in Goa is unwarranted. The Governor of Goa and the High Court are requested to look into this matter. Also why is he being given an extension as part of cronyism and neopotism when there are many efficient and educated Goans? Row after Goa official calls Church schools ‘pampered’ by Fwire <http://www.firstpost.com/author/fwire> Sep 7, 2013 <http://www.firstpost.com/tag/newstracker>

Panaji, Sep 6 (IANS): A Goa bureaucrat’s comment calling schools run by the powerful Catholic Archdiocese Board of Education (ABE) as “pampered institutions” has triggered controversy and prompted calls for his removal.

Entebbites Brave The Elements For A Reunion
By Armand Rodrigues

Click photos to Enlarge

By any measure, Entebbe (Uganda) was only a small town, but it still evokes memories of abiding friendships among the multitude of Goans and others who called it their home-away-from-home for several years. Until they were ingloriously expelled by ingrate Idi Amin, in 1972, they enjoyed a carefree and comfortable lifestyle in a congenial environment, that they thought would never end. To their credit, Entebbites bonded well with each other and emerged as a close-knit community. It is four decades since the expellees landed on Canadian shores. They continue to see their expulsion as a blessing in disguise. After a successful reunion last year, they opted for another this year.

Dutch Invent Gearbox Without Gear
http://www.partsservicesholland.com

Controlled Rotation System can change automotive and bike industry

BEST, The Netherlands, Sept. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - Four Dutchmen invented, developed and patented a gearbox without any gear wheels. Compared to traditional transmissions their revolutionary Controlled Rotation System (CRS) has a simple design, is maintenance free, doesn't require lubricants and saves fuel because it lacks friction between the gears. Therefore it's a sustainable technology.

The inventors from the Eindhoven region expect the new transmission to change the automotive industry on a worldwide scale. The system has no gear wheels, but uses two discs which are powered by a strong belt. With the help of a digital operated hydraulic oil pump and so called slide units the diameter of the discs is increased and decreased, causing acceleration and deceleration, thus providing a different gear.

The Contemporary Temporary

Spotlighting the Expanding Roles of Today's Temporary Workers

Toronto, Sept. 3, 2013 /CNW/ - When people hear the words "temporary work," they often think of clerical jobs or seasonal holiday positions. But as business needs have evolved, so has the role of the "temp worker". Temporary financial staffing firm Accountemps has identified a new set of realities for today's temporary workers.

Powering your brain with whole grains as part of high quality diet can lead to better brain health, research says

Healthy Grains Institute (CNW Group/Healthy Grains Institute)

Toronto, Sept. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - Think your diet doesn't have much impact on your brain function? Think again. There is a wealth of evidence to show that a healthy balanced diet supports life-long brain health. In fact, scientific evidence indicates that a healthy diet - that includes whole grains, vegetables and fruit - helps maintain brain function, slow memory decline and may help reduce the risk for Alzheimer's1 disease.

Battle over Wireless Devices Heats up on the first day of School

Mississauga, ON, Sept. 3, 2013 /CNW/ - The controversy over wireless devices in the classroom moves to Peel this morning, Canada's second largest school district. But some parents, teachers and even doctors are warning against the policy, for health reasons.

Students, instructors forced to seek creative solutions to avoid shelling out big bucks for textbooks

Ottawa, Sept. 9, 2013 /CNW/ - As students return to class, costs weigh heavy on the minds of many. Tuition and rent may be the most prominent costs for students, but with a term's worth of textbooks often costing as much as a month's rent, the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) and Campus Stores Canada (CSC) think it is important to highlight easy ways that government can reduce costs for students, including amending Canada's Book Importation Regulations.

TD Canada Trust breaks down the financial commitment for first-time buyers

Toronto, Sept. 10, 2013 /CNW/ - Buying a home is the biggest purchase most Canadians will ever make, and with the high cost of real estate today, understanding the full financial commitment is critical. TD Canada Trust breaks down three key home financing decisions for first-time homebuyers to consider: down payments (20% is the goal), mortgage options (it's not just about the lowest interest rate possible) and accelerated payments (pay down more than you need to).
