Canada can choose to become a global food super-power

Toronto, March 19, 2014 /CNW/ - Canada could move from being one of the top 20 net food exporting countries in the world to being one of the top five within the next few years— while addressing the legitimate needs of Canadians for safe, healthy and affordable food. The Canadian Food Strategy, unveiled by The Conference Board of Canada at the 3rd Canadian Food Summit 2014, is a blueprint for change in the food sector.

Buying a property solo or with friends or family?

TD advises on specific considerations when taking a less conventional approach to buying property
Toronto, March 25, 2014 /CNW/ - Today's homebuyers don't always look like the traditional nuclear family of the past. As a recent TD survey discovered, a quarter of Canadians who bought a home in the last 24 months - or are planning to in the near future - did so on their own. Furthermore, four in ten Canadians think buying property - whether a primary residence or vacation home - with friends or family members is a great way to get started. With this shift towards non-traditional ways of purchasing property, planning carefully can help avoid potential bumps on the road.

Fait accompli....Comments on the Ukraine Crisis
By: Roland Francis roland.francis at | Posted on GoaNet | Wed Mar 19 2014

The world was beginning to tire of it's only superpower acting like a spoilt child and stepping into other people's crap even when not wanted. Singlehandedly it belittled the United Nations and trivialized it's purpose. With the help of it's client state Britain under Blair and now with the backing of Canada whose beacon under Trudeau up to Chretien once guided peace among quarrelling nations and whose respect is now in tatters under Uncle Sam's client Prime Minister Harper, it has made nonsense of the sovereignty of nations.

Stairway to heaven
Andrew Pereira,TNN | Mar 20, 2014,

Panaji: In most ancient civilizations, people built their places of worship-their connection to God-on hilltops and mountain peaks. Away from the conundrums of the world, the peace, beauty and isolation was a step closer to the creator.

Quo Vadis Goa?
Published on: February 15, 2014 - 23:18 | By Prabhakar Sinari

Goa, the auspicious land of Gods, the revered region blessed with abundant nature is under severe threat; and the threat is such that it can completely wipe out the identity of the place, making it look like a totally alien locality.

Winnipeg Summer and Winter.
By: Michael Pinto

I have spent last 40 winters in Winnipeg, this winter was the worst for being the coldest and highest amount of snowfall. Temperatures plunged to –52C and had the most cold days in 100 years. There were days it was colder than North Pole and Mars too. The driveway is 120 Feet long , and I had to break every 20minutes, all whole shovelling, took close to 3 hours each time

What will it take for Canadians to wake up to the threats of extreme weather?

Majority think climate change is causing more frequent storms, but aren't taking action to protect their homes and communities

Toronto, March 19, 2014 /CNW/ - Heavy rainstorms, snowfall and floods increasingly dominate news headlines, with extreme weather events directly affecting more than 3.5 million Canadians in 2013. According to the seventh annual RBC Canadian Water Attitude Study, three-quarters of Canadians (74 per cent) agree that climate change will cause these events to happen more frequently. Yet just 23 per cent are concerned about extreme weather causing droughts or flooding and only nine per cent of Canadians have taken precautionary measures to protect themselves and their homes from the effects of extreme weather events.

Wireless electricity may soon power cell phones, cars and even heart pumps
By Eric Pfeiffer

This MIT demonstration first showed how electricity can be wirelessly transferred to a device (MIT) In a few years, you may never have to worry about manually charging your cell phone or paying for gasoline again. Wireless electricity isn’t a new concept – it was publicly demonstrated over 100 years ago by Nikola Tesla - but has remained elusive in broad commercial applications. However, a startup company says they are working to change that, with a business model that could make portable power commonplace.

'Happiness levels of Goans decreasing'
Anisha Francis,TNN | Mar 20, 2014,

"Our research has found that native Goans are any day much happier than the business-minded people from other states who have made Goa their home…..”

Panaji: They leave their mark-a smiling yellow sun-everywhere; on trees and t-shirts, on bumper stickers, roadside food carts and even on garbage cans. For the past four years, Goa's 'Live Happy' campaign has quietly been living in the corners of our subconscious through their sunshiney-logo, and are now in the process of measuring Goa's 'happiness quotient'.

Strange weather: how a bad monsoon could be good for India
By Reuters Staff | March 7, 2014 | By Mayank Bhardwaj and Jo Winterbottom

A bad monsoon in India is the one that fails to deliver enough rain … most of the time. This year, a lack of rainclouds could be the silver lining that the government needs. India has no place left to store more grain, and can ill afford a hefty payout to farmers for the truckloads of produce that another monsoon could produce.

Tony Fernandes: Entire Indian aviation industry has tried to block AirAsia
By ET Now | 25 Mar, 2014, 02.38AM IST | From Economic Times

Getting a flying licence in India has been tough: AirAsia
"In any country that we have gone, we have never experienced an industry that has ganged up against us," AirAsia's Tony Fernandes said.

By: Uttkarsh Chaturvedi

AirAsia chief Tony Fernandes said Indian carriers have ganged up to try and block his India venture and that he's shocked by the intensity of their antagonism. "I have never experienced this in my life, where the entire aviation industry has tried to block us. We have been sued and taken to court by every person I know," Fernandes told ET NOW on the sidelines of a Credit Suisse conference in Hong Kong. The time taken to obtain a flying licence also seems to have unsettled Fernandes, who had been looking to start operations in India by the end of December last year. For that reason, he doesn't want to put a date on when the airline will start flying.
