Indian PM’s moves praised
Published on Wed Aug 20 2014 – Toronto Star
India’s PM urges end to violence against women, Aug. 16

In his first Indian Independence Day speech, Indian PM Narendra Modi came out strongly against the key issue of sexual attacks on women and provided needed leadership on some key social and economic matters. This should help not only heal the divisiveness and communal wounds in the largest global democracy but also would impress global business decision-makers to increase their investment in India, which is eager and ready to do business.

In Their Own Land Outcasts
Lisa Ann Monteiro

They may be original inhabitants of the State but the tribals in Goa continue to be denied their rightful place in mainstream society. Cyril Fernandes’ book ‘ Justice at the Grassroots’ which is a tribute to Antonio Francisco Fernandes, a leader of Goa’s tribal communities from Quelossim, brings the tribal community out from the shadows.

Very little research has been carried out on the ethnic tribes of Goa and this book provides an insight into their history, culture, struggles and plight today. Fernandes finds that no one has put Goa’s history into proper perspective and this book, he claims, is his attempt to do so by examining history from their standpoint.

Should we judge people’s capabilities based on their English proficiency?
By Sabrina Almeida | August 21, 2014

Every once in a while I hear the snickers when someone mispronounces a word or is not able to string together a simple sentence correctly in English. I’ve known and met many people who have survived, and rather well, despite not being able to speak a word of it. Yes, here in Canada. And this has led me to believe that not knowing English is less of a tragedy that we make it out to be.

Coming from a country like India that was a British colony, we’ve no doubt been led to believe in the supremacy of the Queen’s language. Look around and you will realize that most (if not all) other countries that stress on communicating primarily in English have been under British rule at some time.
