On Saturday 18th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper along with key members of his caucus, colleagues from all levels of government, members of the diplomatic corps as well as the top spiritual and community leaders were at the Hindu Sabha Mandir, Brampton to celebrate Diwali.

There was a huge turn out, hundreds of specially invited members of the community were on hand to celebrate Diwali. Canadians missing a beat over their own health

Too many Canadians are moving too little, sitting too long, and not eating or sleeping adequately.
Ottawa, Oct. 21, 2014 /CNW/ - Canadians are not any healthier than they were a decade ago, despite having much more knowledge of what makes up a healthy lifestyle, according to the first publication of a Conference Board of Canada research project that makes the case for healthy active living.

Joshua J. McElwee | Oct. 18, 2014 | Synod on the Family | Vatican City

Why more NRI’s are looking to spend more time in India
October 3, 2014 • | By Pradip Rodrigues

The rockstar reception and electrifying 70-minute speech delivered by Indian PM Narendra Modi at Madison Square Garden last week seems to have electrified the Indian diaspora everywhere. A huge wave of euphoria, pride, patriotism and nostalgia has washed the diaspora. PM Modi’s speech received standing ovations and applause every now and but the one thing that really got him a thunderous applause was when he acknowledged the difficulties PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card holders faced.

Synod a win for Francis and for openness
Thomas Reese | Oct. 18, 2014 NCR Today

As people analyze and debate the final relatio or report from the synod on the family, there is a danger of missing the forest for the trees. It is true, the welcoming language toward gays was dialed back from what was expressed in the October 13 draft, and Communion has not yet been granted to divorced and remarried Catholics.

Dementia: Why putting my parents in a home will haunt me forever

Broadcaster Fiona Phillips reflects on the difficult decisions she faced when both parents were diagnosed with dementia.

There are more than 433,000 people currently living in care homes throughout the UK. This means, if a recent survey is to be believed, that hundreds of thousands of loved ones will have made one of the hardest decisions of their lives. The study found that choosing care for a parent is one of life's most stressful events, ranking higher than buying a house and even divorce.

Rev. Fr. Tony Fernandes - Appointed Director of the Dominic Savio Retreat Centre (UK)

Rev. Fr. Tony Fernandes, SDB, has always been an inspirational shepherd to his flock of Dr. Ribeiro Goan School class-of-64 classmates. 46 years as a professed Salesian and 37 years as a priest of the Religious Congregation known as Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr. Tony has worked tirelessly in Tanzania, Kenya, India, and now the UK. Fr. Tony currently serves at the St. Dominic Savio Youth Retreat Centre, Cheshire, UK. It is with much pride that we announce his recent appointment to the Directorship of the Dominic Savio Retreat Centre, also known as Savio House. An accomplishment, indeed, as this is the first time a recent émigré has been appointed to such an important position. Fr. Tony asks for our prayers that he will meet the expectations of those who have voted him into this prestigious position.

The Westend Seniors’ Club always has a full roster of activities and members seem to participate in them with commendable enthusiasm. And, it is not all about socials, and games like trook, bridge, whist and bingo. October tenth heard members flexing their voice-boxes and belting out the Litany with fervour, in their best rendition of Latin. Never mind if not everybody could translate everything into English or Konkanim. All were caught up in the spirit of the moment.

Book Review - Community, Memory, and Migration in a Globalizing World
The Goan Experience, c. 1890-1980

Margret Frenz

336 pages | 216x138mm

Goans have long been a mobile community, but the story of their migrations has not been told until now. Using rarely-consulted archives across the world, as well as interviews with nearly 300 people of Goan origin, this book tells the fascinating story of how and why Goans went to East Africa and then on to Canada, the UK or to other parts of India. Goans helped to shape the contours of empires and the modern world. This study of globalization from below illuminates how Goans established communities in East Africa, and explores their experience of migration as well as their memories, and how these influenced their individual and collective identities.
